CANAAN—A Schenectady man was killed in a two-vehicle crash in an eastbound lane of the Berkshire Spur (I-90) prior to Exit B3 (Austerlitz/New Lebanon), Wednesday, August 3 at about 7:05 a.m.
State Police report that a 2011 Ford Econoline E-350 van driven by David L. Kinder, 55, of Schenectady struck the rear of a 2008 International tractor trailer, causing the van to go off the road and come to rest in a wooded area.
Mr. Kinder was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the tractor trailer, Mirlan Maratbekov, 23, of Billings, MT, was not hurt.
The accident was reconstructed by the State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit and is still under investigation.
Greenport
Sheriff’s deputies were called to assist Greenport Police with a health and welfare check on a 28-year-old man, who lives on Middle Road, August 3 at 7:39 p.m.
Upon arrival, it was determined that the man was suicidal, possibly in possession of knives, had barricaded himself in his residence and made statements that he wished to be shot by police, according to a press release from Sheriff David P. Bartlett.
Additional personnel were contacted to respond and assist, including State Police, SP BCI Livingston negotiators, the Greenport Fire Department, and the Greenport Rescue Squad.
The incident ended with the subject being taken into custody under the Mental Health Law and brought for treatment at Columbia Memorial Hospital.
Columbia-Greene Shared Services Response Team was contacted and responded to the scene as a precaution; but the Sheriff said that they were not used.
There were reports of a fire inside the residence at the time of the stand-off, which is still being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office.
”No members of the public were endangered during this incident. Because of multi-agency cooperation, this ended without any injury to any person,” the sheriff said in the release.
*In an update of July incident State Police report that Edward Murphy, 59, of Albany has been charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs, an unclassified misdemeanor, and first degree vehicular assault, a class D felony.
Mr. Murphy was arraigned in Greenport Court and released on his own recognizance, August 8. He is scheduled to reappear in Greenport Court September 12.
The charges come in connection with a July 7, 8 p.m., two-car personal injury auto collision on the Rip Van Winkle Bridge (State Route 23). Mr. Murphy was driving a red 2013 Chevrolet sedan erratically as he traveled eastbound across the bridge. He drove across the double yellow lines and into the westbound lane where he struck a 2003 Ford Focus head-on.
Both the driver of the Ford Focus, Irene Pough, 57, of Catskill and her passenger, her daughter, Virginia Pough, 29, of Catskill, were taken to Albany Medical Center with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
Mr. Murphy was first taken to Columbia Memorial Hospital and then to Albany Medical Center, also with non-life threatening injuries.
State Police were assisted at the scene by the Greenport Fire Department, Greenport Police Department, Catskill Police Department, NYS Bridge Authority and the Greenport Rescue Squad.
Claverack
Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched by Columbia County 911 to investigate a report about a vehicle being operated in an erratic manner on State Route 23, August 2 at 3:09 p.m.
Shortly after the original dispatch, the responding Sheriff’s Office patrol was advised that the vehicle in question was involved in a head-on collision on State Route 23 near the Yorkshire Motel, according to a press release from Columbia County Sheriff David P. Bartlett.
On arrival, deputies found that a 1996 Saturn operated by Donald Adamson, 64, of Naugatuck, CT, had been traveling west on State Route 23 and failed to keep right. The Adamson vehicle crossed over the center line into the path of an eastbound vehicle, which was a 2012 Toyota, driven by Nicholas Dellea, 24, of Copake. The Greenport Rescue Squad took both Mr. Adamson and Mr. Dellea to the Albany Medical Center for treatment of injuries.
There were no passengers in either vehicle.
Mr. Adamson was charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to submit to a chemical test, third degree aggravated unlicensed operation and failure to keep right.
Due to the injuries Mr. Adamson sustained in the accident, he was issued appearance tickets returnable in Claverack Court August 16.
Kinderhook
Two people were hurt in a rear-end collision at the intersection of routes 9 and 9H, July 25 at 3:45 p.m.
Shuhel Miah, 42, of Hudson was driving a 1998 Acura when he was stopped at a sign on Route 9 waiting to merge onto Route 9H.
Mr. Miah started to pull out, but stopped again to wait for an oncoming vehicle when his vehicle was struck in the rear by a 2015 BMW operated by Kathryn Taft, 44, of New York City. Ms. Taft was stopped behind the Miah vehicle when she saw it pull ahead. She also started going forward and could not stop in time before hitting the Miah vehicle in the rear. The Valatie Rescue Squad took two of the three occupants in the Miah vehicle to Columbia Memorial Hospital for treatment.
No tickets were issued by Deputy Jason Garvey.
Valatie firefighters were back in service at 3:54 p.m.
Drugs/alcohol
The following face drug- and/or alcohol-related charges:
*Cory D. Collins, 25, of Elizaville was charged with unlawfully growing cannabis, a misdemeanor, by State Police from Livingston, July 11 at 3:35 p.m. Columbia County 911 called troopers to investigate a dispute. A subsequent investigation revealed that Mr. Collins was growing marijuana on the property. He was issued a ticket directing him to appear in Livingston Court at a later date.
*Carol J. Cole, 40, of Greenport was charged with driving while intoxicated, refusal to take a breath test, speeding, unsafe tires and driving an uninspected vehicle by State police from New Lebanon, July 14 at 10:20 p.m. Ms. Cole was stopped for speeding on State Route 9 and Maple Lane South, Kinderhook and found to be intoxicated. She was arraigned in Kinderhook Town Court before Justice David Dellehunt and released on her own recognizance. She was due to return to court at a later date.
