CANAAN—State Police investigators from the Livingston barracks arrested four Berkshire Farm Center juveniles August 23 in connection with two separate incidents reported to police over the August 22/23 weekend.
Troopers were called by Columbia County 911 to Tremper Association Road for a reported assault, August 22 at 10:51 p.m.
They interviewed the victim, who told them he heard glass breaking outside and exited his home to investigate. He told police that three teenage boys surrounded him and physically assaulted him.
The teens then ran away toward Queechy Lake.
Upon further review, police found that the teens had damaged a vehicle by smashing the rear passenger window and had burglarized a neighboring cabin. Troopers conducted a lengthy investigation that revealed three youths were missing from Berkshire Farm Center during the time of the reported crimes. Prior to kayaking to Tremper Association Road, the juveniles had entered the Berkshire Farm boathouse and caused damage to the building.
Troopers responded to a Canaan residence for a reported assault, August 23 at 2:45 a.m. The victim reported that he heard a knock at his door and upon opening it, he was struck in the face by an unknown juvenile. The two teens entered the residence and stole cash from the victim before fleeing the scene.
The same day, August 23, two 14-year-olds and one 15-year-old were taken into custody in connection wit the August 22 incident and charged with second degree burglary, a class C felony; third degree burglary, a class D felony, and third degree assault, a class A misdemeanor.
A 15-year-old and a 14-year-old were charged with second degree robbery following the second incident reported to police August 23. The investigation revealed that one of the teens was present during both incidents.
Two of the juveniles were taken to a secure facility in Albany. Two other youths were issued family court appearance tickets and are scheduled to appear at a later date. State Police were assisted by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
Van crash injures two
Five family members were riding in a van, returning from Afghanistan, when the van went off the northbound lane of the Taconic State Parkway, north of Manor Rock Road, Taghkanic, August 27 at 3:19 p.m., according to newsman Lance Wheeler, who was on the scene. State Police are investigating. Churchtown firefighters and the Greenport Rescue Squad were called to the scene. The van left the parkway for no apparent reason, slammed through trees before finally coming to rest in a small gully in the woods. Three family members refused medical attention and the rescue squad took two to Albany Medical Center. Firefighters were back in service at 5:13 p.m. A State Police spokesperson said a report on the crash was incomplete.
C + D smolders in train car
A stubborn CSX railroad container fire that started in East Chatham August 29 at 10:41 p.m. ended up in Chatham.
The gondola-type car hauling 200,000 pounds of construction and demolition debris from Worchester, MA, caught on fire around 10:30 p.m. and heat sensors on the track alerted the engineer to the blaze.
Firefighters had a tough time getting to the hot spots estimated to be sizzling at 500 degrees. The burning car was moved from the main line about seven miles, to a more accessible location in the Village of Chatham, near the old Blue Seal store. Chatham firefighters were dispatched at 11:58 p.m. and then Ghent firefighters at 2:57 a.m. to continue extinguishing the fire. Firefighters remained until 3:35 a.m.
On Sunday, August 30 at 1:14 p.m. Chatham and Ghent firefighters returned to the scene to put out the fire with assistance of a contractor who unloaded the debris from the car clump by clump so firefighter could douse it with water. Units were back in service at 4:13 p.m.
Red Hook
Nicole F. Patrick, 29, of Hudson and Zachary S. Couse, 30, of Red Hook were charged with several counts of petit larceny and sixth degree conspiracy, both misdemeanors, by State Police from the Rhinebeck barracks, August 26 at 12:30 a.m.
Troopers responded to Bard College for a larceny complaint. The victim reported to police that his unlocked vehicle was entered and miscellaneous items were missing. The victim was able to provide police with a description of the suspect’s vehicle.
Moments later, troopers received a Dutchess County 911 call about two subjects entering unlocked vehicles in the area of the Red Hook Estates. An investigation revealed that a Good Samaritan saw two subjects breaking into vehicles that were parked in his and his neighbor’s driveway. He confronted the woman, later identified as Ms. Patrick, and numerous items taken from the car fell from her arms on to the ground.
Ms. Patrick attempted to flee and yelled for her partner, “Zack.” The Good Samaritan had a family member contact 911 while he held the suspect until the police arrived on scene.
Ms. Patrick’s partner, later identified as Mr. Couse, was located by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office and turned over to the State Police.
Residents of the Red Hook area who believe they may have had items stolen from their vehicles are asked to contact the State Police by calling 845 677-7300.
State Police were assisted by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office.
Ms. Patrick and Mr. Couse were scheduled for arraigned in Red Hook Town Court.
Stockport
Keith E. Lannan, 31, of Columbiaville was charged on a warrant for second degree criminal contempt, a class A misdemeanor, by Deputy Peter Grzeskow, August 5 at 1 p.m.
Mr. Lannan is accused of violating an order of protection in Stockport. He was arraigned in Claverack Court and released on his own recognizance. He was to appear in Stockport Court at a later date.
Drugs/alcohol
The following face drug- and/or alcohol-related charges:
- Kristine A. Link, 42, of Hillsdale was charged with driving while intoxicated, resisting arrest, unlawful possession of marijuana and several vehicle and traffic offenses by State Police from the Livingston barracks, August 1. Troopers stopped the vehicle Ms. Link was operating on State Route 23, Copake for speeding, failure to maintain lane and for having an inadequate brake lamp. While police interviewed her, they saw indications that she was intoxicated. While attempting to place her in custody for DWI, she allegedly physically resisted. Following her arrest, she was found to be in possession of 8.4 grams of marijuana. She was arraigned in Copake Court and released on her own recognizance to reappear at a later date.
- Brianna Miller, 24, of Millerton was charged with driving while intoxicated and having a blood alcohol content (BAC) greater than .08%, both class U misdemeanors; failure to keep right and unsafe tires, both traffic infractions, by Deputy Peter Grzeskow, August 15 at 3:48 p.m. Columbia County 911 dispatched the Sheriff’s Office to a one-vehicle personal injury accident on State Route 9H, Claverack. Deputies found that Ms. Miller was operating a vehicle that struck a utility pole. Her passenger, Jacquelyn Hall, was taken to Columbia Memorial Hospital by the Greenport Rescue Squad for treatment of neck pain. Ms. Miller took a breathalyzer test which yielded a .09% BAC. She was issued tickets returnable in Claverack Court at a later date.
- Jacquelyn Hall, 20, of Millerton was charged with seventh degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class A misdemeanor, by Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Brian Molinski and Deputy Peter Grzeskow, August 15 at 10:20 p.m. Ms. Hall is accused of possessing Lorazepam, a schedule IV controlled substance, without a prescription. She was issued an appearance ticket returnable in Claverack Court at a later date.
