KINDERHOOK – Five candidates are running for three seats on the Ichabod Crane School Board of Education. The three candidates with the highest number of votes will win the seats, which are for three-year terms.

Board President Andrew Kramarchyk is running for his seat, along with John Chandler, who was appointed to a seat on the board last winter. Board Vice President John Phillips is not running for reelection. Cheryl Trefzger and Susan Ramos are seeking seats on the board; neither has previously served on the school board.

In addition to the candidates above, whose names will appear on the ballot, one person has announced she is seeking election as a write-in candidate. Landra Haber, who served on the board for 13 years, hopes that voters will write her name on the ballot. Instructions for how to vote for a write in candidate will be posted at the annual vote on the $33.8-million budget and the board candidates held at the high school gym May 17. The polls are open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Anyone who has questions about registering to vote should contact the district office at 518 758-7575.

John Chandler

I have lived in the Town of Kinderhook since 1999. My wife is a teacher and we have three young children attending Ichabod Crane. I am a 1986 graduate of Hudson High School and went on to attain my JD and MBA from Albany Law School and Union University. I am currently a vice president and senior trust officer of Ballston Spa National Bank.

I believe the value of any educator’s job is second only to parenting and that the foundation of a well-rounded, caring, responsible, and productive adult member of any community is based on both his or her family support and involvement and the education and experiences realized from early childhood through becoming a young adult.

I was appointed to my current term as a member of the School Board of Education of Ichabod Crane, and am seeking election for a second full-term.

I am running for the school board as a write-in candidate because I believe that, in times of economic hardship, the district must focus its limited resources on maintaining core academic program. Since this involves sacrifices at every turn, an on-going dialog with the entire community is absolutely essential. The current board did a superb job of establishing this dialog, but it got derailed at the last minute. If elected, I will do everything in my power to help re-establish this dialog and regain the trust of the community.

I moved to the district with my family nearly 20 years ago and served on the Ichabod board from 1997-2009. I have four adult children and two grandchildren. My sons graduated from Ichabod. I am now retired, but I spent much of my career working for nonprofit educational and child advocacy organizations. Children are and always have been my top priority.

Andrew Kramarchyk

Andrew Kramarchyk, 49, of Stockport, is running for his third term on the Board of Education.  First elected in 2005, and reelected in 2008, Mr. Kramarchyk served as vice President of the board in 2008 and 2009, and as President in 2010.  In addition to these board leadership positions Mr. Kramarchyk has served on the Facilities, Athletic Ad-Hoc, Negotiations, and Communications committees.  He has also served as the Kinderhook Central School District’s representative at several NYSSBA State Legislative Network conferences. Mr. Kramarchyk has been a resident of the Ichabod Crane district since 1998, and has seen his two children graduate from ICC: Katerina in 2006, and Demetrius in 2009.

Mr. Kramarchyk attended Hudson Valley Community College, and Siena College, and has worked in the distribution and transportation industry for over 20 years.  He currently serves as the distribution center manager for Empire Merchants North in Coxsackie. Mr. Kramarchyk has had a long history of volunteerism in the community. He taught second and tenth grade catechism at St. John’s Church for many years, and he was a coach, officer and president in the Northern Columbia Little League for several years; he was also the co-founder and vice-president of Northern Columbia Travel Baseball. In addition Mr. Kramarchyk had previously coached CYO basketball and Pop Warner football here in Northern Columbia County.  Mr. Kramarchyk served as the president of North Colonie Pop Warner, and coached both baseball and football in the Latham area prior to moving to Kinderhook.

Susan Ramos

I would be honored to serve on the school board. My 30+ years’ career working with children demonstrates my abilities and passion required for the duties as a board member for the district.

During my 10 years as board member for the CD Child Care Coordinating Council, I was an executive member for six. I was founder and president of the NYS School-Age Care Coalition for 10 years, which emphasized on quality educational programming, training and accreditation. I hold a BSE in Physical Education and a MS Ed. in School District Administration.

As executive director for 14 years at Greenbush Child Caring, Inc., I was responsible for developing and managing budgets, human resources, and assuring the delivery high quality programming.

I am a taxpayer whose child attends the primary school. I volunteer in classrooms, for special events, and for school banking. I am a non-voting member of the ICC’s Board’s Audit and Finance Committee.

My goal for the board is to assure our district children receive a quality education with high standards for academic performance, which will ensure their success for the future while being fiscally prudent and receptive to the taxpayers and community.

Cheryl Francoeur Trefzger

I am seeking a seat on the Ichabod Crane School Board. I have lived in the district since 1996 along with my husband, Ron, and together we have three children — one is serving our country as a Marine, one in college and another in high school. Many of you may know me because of my extensive involvement with the IC athletic department. I firmly believe that every student should have a right to select from a plethora of extracurricular activities. I would also like to see our school lunch program revamped and balance out the food choices and cost.

As a taxpayer, my goal is to help this community clearly understand our tax levy and how budget expenses work. Getting our entire community involved is critical to success because education is a business and its customer is our children.

My expertise is in finance and marketing, with over 20 years of professional experience. I have been actively involved in the elementary PTA, middle school PTSA, and High School Booster Club. Why choose me for a seat? I will make a difference and will support the needs of our students and community!
