HUDSON—In accordance with the City of Hudson Charter and the State Found Property Law, the Hudson Police Department auctions off property that has come in to its possession. Items that are found and turned over to the department are held for the time period prescribed by law while police attempt to find the owner. In many instances the owners are never found, and the property is never claimed.
Hudson Police recently received authorization to distribute unclaimed bicycles to the Hudson Correctional Facility and St. Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
The bikes were received by the two organizations at Promenade Park. Representing the Department of Corrections were Ron McDonaugh, vocational supervisor for the prison, and Donna Traver, educator at the prison and chairperson of “Make A Difference Day,” an ongoing charitable event sponsored at the prison. Representing St. Michael’s Ukrainian Church was the Reverend Wolodymir Paszko, Reverend Mykola Krywonoos is on sabbatical in Ukraine.
The 21 bicycles given to the prison will be refurbished by the inmates as part of a vocational program and returned to area youth through a charity. The 10 bicycles given the church will be shipped to an orphanage in Ukraine.
“I have seen unclaimed bikes put on a pallet and auctioned for scrap metal for four or five dollars. This way, disadvantaged children will receive a safe bike that looks and rides like new,” Hudson Police Chief L. Edward Moore said in a press release.
