GHENT—John Joseph Winkler, age 93, of Ghent passed away peacefully at his home February 4, 2025. He was born July 9, 1931 in Albany, to the late Joseph and Rose (Fuhrman) Winkler.
He was a devoted husband to Dolores (Heim) Winkler for 69 years and father of seven children, and two daughters-in-law: Carl Winkler (predeceased), Paul Winkler, Ellen Winkler, John Winkler, Wilma (De Los Angeles) Winkler, Suzanne Winkler, Kristopher Winkler, Jamie (Kaese) Winkler and Kevin Winkler. He is also survived by: six grandchildren, Carl Winkler, Michael Winkler, Justin Winkler, Reggie De Los Angeles, Tyler Winkler and Natalee Winkler and seven great-grandchildren.
He graduated from Vincentian Institute and Siena College, then served in the Army. He purchased the Harder Insurance Agency in Chatham and also became a partner at Metz Wood until he retired in 1998.
He enjoyed singing in the choir at St. James Church in Chatham where he was also a eucharistic minister. He took pleasure in restoring his house, creating furniture and traveling in his motor home. His loving, patient ways and sense of humor will be missed by all.
Family received friends at the French, Gifford, Preiter & Blasl Funeral Home February 7. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at the Saint James Church February 8. Interment followed at Saint James Cemetery.
