POTSDAM—Samuel C. Wright, III, 57, of Claverack passed away March 5, 2025 at Canton Potsdam Hospital, after being hospitalized while on an ice fishing trip with friends.

He was born February 22, 1968 in Hudson to the late Samuel C. Wright, II, and Frederica (Wiencke) Wright. He graduated from Taconic Hills Central School in 1986 and then earned his degree in civil engineering from Hudson Valley Community College. He was born to a farmer and his wife, and was raised milking cows and goats, collecting eggs and bailing hay.

“Sam” was a contractor and entrepreneur with his own contracting business. His perfection and attention to detail set him apart as a skilled carpenter. He had a love of nature and was passionate about conservation. Even while foraging he never took more than needed. An intelligent man of many talents, he was a self-taught farmer and grower of mushrooms.

He had a love for ice fishing with friends, of which he had plenty. He was a true people person and would always strike up a conversation even with complete strangers. On Sundays he enjoyed watching football. His focus was on the plays and strategies versus who wins or loses. He was a lover of knowledge who believed that one should never stop learning. He passed his knowledge on to his children and family.

He is survived by: his loving mother, Frederica Wright; his brothers, Nate (wife Rachel) and Christopher (wife Dana); his children, Samuel C. Wright, IV, Victoria Wright and Maddox Dallas-Wright; his four grandchildren, whom he adored spending time with, Annabelle, Noah, Sophie and Chloe; his companion, Shari Franks; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

He was predeceased by his father, and his brother, Leroy Wright.

A celebration of his life will be held May 17, 2025 at his mother’s home at time to be determined and will be announced. Donations in his memory may be made to the Philmont Food Pantry or a local food pantry of one’s choice. He believed that these were vital to the local community. Arrangements are with the Peck & Peck Funeral Home.
