ALBANY – The Times Union Athlete of the Year is Anthony Carlucci, Ichabod Crane.

When assessing his own skills on the pitch, Carlucci settled on one main attribute.

“I like to pass the ball,” Carlucci said.

Carlucci’s playmaking skills helped propel the Riders to a Section II Class B title and a berth in the state title game. The star midfielder tallied 13 goals to go with a Section II-best 23 assists.

“It is hard to believe he is only a junior,” Ichabod Crane coach Michael Young said.

Carlucci flourished as Young, the Riders’ first-year coach, shifted the junior to the middle of the field this season.

“The last few years, he had played on the outside,” Young said. “We sat down before the season and talked. The conversation came down me asking him, ‘Where do you want to play?’ I think things have worked out pretty well for him.”

“It was a good confidence-boost entering the season. It really set my mind on what my role was,” Carlucci said.

A two-time Times Union small-school first-team selection, Carlucci also garnered his second straight Colonial Council first-team nod from the league’s coaches.

“He is very good at keeping the ball for his size,” Young said. “He is really balanced and feels comfortable with both feet. To be able to find a guy, under duress, is a pretty special talent.”

The Riders finished 20-1-1 overall after dropping a 4-0 decision in the state final against Center Moriches.

“We had a lot of experience coming back, so we thought we could (get to the state final),” Carlucci said. “All I want to do now is get back there again.”

Other county athletes mentioned include:

Giovanni Gomez, Jr., Ichabod Crane: Tremendously creative up top. Gomez tallied 23 goals to go along with 12 assists. The best outing for the Colonial Council first-team choice came in a four-goal performance vs. Ravena.

Anthony Carlucci, Jr., Ichabod Crane: Also named a Times Union first-team selection in 2016, Carlucci helped the Riders reach the Class B state final as he scored 13 goals to go along with 23 assists.

Kevin Winglosky, Sr., Ichabod Crane: Named as a Times Union All-Star in 2016, Winglosky’s knack for scoring clutch goals actually increased as a senior as the Colonial Council first-team choice tallied 17 goals and eight assists.

Matt Ragosta, Sr., Ichabod Crane: The leader of a unit that allowed only nine goals, Ragosta earned Colonial Council first-team honors.

Coach of the Year

Michael Young, Ichabod Crane: In his first season guiding the Riders, Young led his team to a 20-1-1 record, a Section II Class B title and a berth in the state final.
