HUDSON–The Hudson City School District held a Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, November 6. Thomas Orbinski, the student representative on the board, spoke at the meeting. He brought up how the school hosted their mock elections on Tuesday. Ballots were counted on Wednesday with Vice President Harris winning by 40 points. Over 400 students voted that day.
One main concern addressed by the public at the meeting was food insecurity in the community. Every week a team of volunteers from the community meets at the school to pack backpacks full of groceries from a food bank. This is a school funded program but does allow donations.
The program ensures that the students who need help are receiving it. They provide food for weekends, breakfasts, lunches, and easy to make dinners. Each bag is packed with easy to prepare food. This allows the kids to be able to make the food on their own without the help from a parent.
They are given two breakfast items such as cereal, oatmeal, and pancake mix. For lunch they are provided soup, peanut butter and jelly or a pasta dish.
The school also makes sure to provide fruits, vegetables, as well as egg and milk stamps from Stewart’s to ensure they are getting all the protein needed to grow.
The recipients of the bags are kept confidential and are carefully picked by teachers and Jason Hanley, the school’s psychologist.
Last year 55 family members were served just in the elementary school alone. There is a food pantry program for every grade – elementary, middle, and high school.
