HUDSON–The fourth candle of a tall menorah was lit on December 10 at 7th Street Park in Hudson by Rabbi Mendel Kremer (see front page). It was the fourth night of Hanukkah or Chanukah.
Originally from Montreal, Rabbi Kremer and his wife, Rochie, founders of Chabad Jewish Center of Columbia County, have been living in Hudson since September 2023. They organized events for the Jewish High Holidays and in the future plan to introduce weekly prayer services, Shabbat dinners, children’s programs, and various community events. Their goal is to establish a permanent Chabad space in the area.
It rained relentlessly on Sunday but spirits were not dampened. Hudson Mayor Kamal Johnson welcomed the gathering, saying that Hudson was a free and welcoming community to everyone.
Rabbi Kremer climbed a ladder and lit the kerosene lanterns that represent the eight days of the holiday. The holiday, celebrated this year from December 7 to 15, calls to mind a conflict 2,100 years ago when the Jewish people who prevailed over an oppressive enemy, recaptured the Temple in Jerusalem. There they found only one jar of oil, supply enough for one day, which however, miraculously lasted for 8 days.
Following the lighting of the menorah a “gelt drop” was conducted. A firefighter mounted in the basket of the Hudson Fire Department Ladder 32 truck dropped little bags of foil covered chocolate for the children. Topping the evening’s events, fire performer Lia Simone twirled flaming balls and fire sticks for the amazement of the gathering.
