How smart are smart meters?

PHILMONT—Drop by and learn about smart meters, digital devices that measure electricity or gas usage and send the information to the energy supplier automatically, at an Open House at 113 Main Street, the storefront at the corner of Summit Street, Friday, December 27, 2 to 5 p.m.

A community-led initiative puts on the open house to raise awareness about smart meters.

According to a press release, “a growing number of citizens are concerned about the continual rollout of wireless infrastructures without regard to community input” including “the soon-coming installation of ‘smart’ meters across our area by electric service supply companies. These meters will add yet another layer of wireless radiation onto our environment and ourselves.” The open house will have displays and takeaway materials.

The release suggests smart meters have “serious downsides” but that consumers have a choice and can opt-out of having a smart meter installed.

The open house provides the opportunity to learn from the available information to make an informed decision about which meter they want servicing their home.
