The Canaan Conservation Club held its annual “Hardwater Fishing Derby” on Queechy Lake Saturday, February 15. The ice was about a foot thick. Over 100 people signed up for the competition. Adult and youth cash awards were given for the three largest fish in each species of Crappie, Pickerel, trout and perch, though no crappies were caught. Results were as follows:

Some keepers held by Manny Perez, Eric Davenport and Rich Perez. They will fillet the fish and fry them, or do what is known as poor man’s shrimp which involves boiling the fillets in a flavored liquid and then refrigerating them to be eaten cold. ©2025
