HUDSON—City Police arrested four suspects in connection with the beating of a 36-year-old Hudson man on Franklin Street, Thursday September 6 at about 11:30 p.m.
Arrested for third degree misdemeanor assault September 10 were: James Hargrove, 22; Tyler Lamont, 19; Anthony Price Baynes, 20; and Lavonne McClendon, 27, all of Hudson.
The four younger men allegedly chased and assaulted the victim following a dispute on the 500 block of State Street. The victim was chased and knocked to the ground by the group, who then punched and kicked him.
They stopped when people living nearby heard the attack and called 911. Hudson Police arrived to find the victim lying bloodied and semi-conscious in the middle of the street. Responding officers rendered medical aid until emergency medical services arrived.
The victim received cuts to his face, arms and back as well as other injuries to his head and facial area.
He was taken to Columbia Memorial Hospital where he was treated and later released the same day.
All four suspects were taken into custody without incident and taken to the police station.
They were arraigned in Hudson City Court before Judge John Connor and sent to the Columbia County Jail pending a later return to City Court.
A press release from Police Chief L. Edward Moore said Mr. Hargrove, who was recently released from the state Department of Correctional Services and is currently on parole, was additionally charged with a parole violation as was Mr. Lamont, who is also on parole.
Mr. Hargrove is on parole for weapons possession conviction. He was arrested in March 2010 for possessing a handgun at 41 North Second Street, Hudson.
Mr. Lamont is on parole after being convicted for a robbery that occurred in January 2011 on North Fifth Street which he committed with three other defendants who were also convicted.
Mr. McClendon was additionally arrested on two other warrants for not appearing in Hudson City Court. The investigation is ongoing and additional arrests may be forthcoming. HPD was assisted by the Columbia County DA’s office.
“This was a case that was initially hard to investigate, as many witnesses were not very forthcoming. I credit our members, detectives and uniform officers alike, for persistent and diligent work. Many interviews were conducted, and several residents stepped up to the plate and gave us the necessary information to make good cases, and make good arrests. Good people in the area made it clear that they don’t want this type of… lawlessness in their neighborhood,” Chief Moore said in the release.
- Fred A. Starke, 38, of Hudson was charged with trespass, second degree obstruction of governmental administration and a violation of Hudson City Code by Police Officer Shane Bower at the police station, September 6 at 9:29 a.m.
Mr. Starke allegedly illegally drove a taxi cab to a Columbia County Family Court judge’s home and allegedly intimidated the judge’s family. Mr. Starke was arraigned before City Court Judge Marc Portin and sent to the Columbia County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or bond pending a return appearance in Hudson City Court.
- Martin J. Davidson, 69, of Claverack was charged on a warrant for fourth degree stalking (illegal communication) by Hudson Police Officer Christopher Filli at the police station, September 9 at 11:48 a.m.
Mr. Davidson allegedly continued to have unwanted contact with the victim after she told him she no longer wanted to communicate with him via text, email or verbally.
Mr. Davidson was arraigned in City Court before Judge John Connors and released on his own recognizance pending a return court appearance. An order of protection was also issued.
- Davan P. McCalla, 24, of Hudson was charged with disorderly conduct (fighting/violent behavior) and fourth degree criminal possession of a weapon (intent to use) by Hudson Police Sergeant Jason Finn at 98 Green Street, September 9 at 11:35 a.m.
Police saw Mr. McCalla assume a fighting stance with another individual while he allegedly possessed a piece of concrete curbing which he intended to use against the other individual.
He was released on an appearance ticket returnable in Hudson City Court.
- A 17-year-old Hudson male was charged with fourth degree stalking (illegal communication) by Hudson Police Officer Jacob Hoffman, III, at the police station, September 12 at 1:58 p.m.
The teen allegedly threatened to expose personal intimate information about the victim, which would have caused mental and emotional harm if made public.
He was released with an appearance ticket returnable in Hudson City Court.
- Three juveniles: two 16-year-old males, one from Hudson, one from Stottville and the third, a 15-year-old from Hudson were all charged with fourth degree criminal mischief (intent to damage property) and second degree attempted robbery by Hudson Police Officers Jeffrey Keyser, Christopher Duntz and David Miller, Jr.
The two 16-year-olds turned themselves in on active arrest warrants at the police station the afternoon of September 10.
The juveniles were charged in connection with an incident in the area of 608 Long Alley, August 24.
While on patrol an officer discovered a man stumbling around in Long Alley, Police Chief L. Edward Moore said by phone this week.
The man told the officer he had been jumped in the alley by several young men, who attempted to rob him.
The youths encountered the man, then “roughed him up” by punching him in the face and ribs, causing injury to his ribs, a swollen left eye and broke his eye glasses. They ultimately did not take anything from the man, the chief said.
The 16-year-olds were arraigned before City Judge John Connor and sent to the Columbia County Jail in lieu of $3,000 cash bail or $1,000 bond. Both were to return to City Court at a later date.
The 15-year-old was ticketed and referred to Columbia County Family Court. The arrest of a fourth juvenile is pending.
- Zachary A. Lewis, 22, of Hudson was charged on a warrant for fourth degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class C felony, and first degree promoting prison contraband, a class D felony, by Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Eli Fieser and Deputy Scott Leggett, September 10 at 8:43 p.m.
Mr. Lewis is accused of possessing cocaine while being confined to the Columbia County Jail on unrelated charges. He was arraigned in Greenport Court and released on his own recognizance pending a return court date.
Greenport
John Allen, 31, of Hudson was charged on a warrant for seventh degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and second degree promoting prison contraband, both class A misdemeanors, by Deputy Thomas Merante, September 3 at 11:15 a.m.
Mr. Allen is accused of possessing a quantity of heroin while being confined to the Columbia County Jail on unrelated charges.
He was arraigned in Greenport Court and remanded to the Columbia County Jail in lieu of $500 bail. He is scheduled to return to court at a later date.
Copake
Nicholas R. Albright, 34, of Copake was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor, by Sergeant Donald Krapf and Deputy Thomas Merante, September 2 at 8:50 p.m.
Mr. Albright allegedly had a physical altercation with a man in front of a child at a private residence in Copake.
He was arraigned in Copake Court and released on his own recognizance to return to court at a later date.
Livingston
Naomi Greene, 31, of Hudson was charged with fourth degree criminal mischief, a class A misdemeanor, by Deputy Thomas Merante September 5 at 4:09 p.m.
Ms. Greene allegedly caused damage to a vehicle while it was parked at a private residence in Livingston. She was arraigned in Livingston Court and sent to the Columbia County Jail in lieu of $2,500 bail. She will return to court at a later date.
Stockport
Shane M. Laurange, 24, of Stockport was charged with first degree criminal contempt, a class E felony, by Deputy Bernard Roberts, September 13 at 11:56 a.m.
Mr. Laurange allegedly violated a court order of protection with a prior conviction. He was arraigned in Stockport Court and released on his own recognizance pending a later return court date.
Drugs/alcohol
The following face drug- and/or alcohol-related charges:
- Don Fax, Jr., 45, of Hudson was charged with driving while intoxicated (operating a motor vehicle with a .08% blood alcohol content, BAC), driving while intoxicated (first offense), first degree aggravated unlicensed operation (alcohol related), two counts of failure to stop at a stop sign and unlawful possession of marijuana by Hudson Police Officer Patrick Meister at 948 Columbia Street, Hudson, September 4 at 2:17 a.m. Mr. Fax was pulled over and found to be operating a motor vehicle with a BAC greater than .08%. He was also found to be operating the motor vehicle while his driving privileges were revoked in New York and was found to be in possession of a small quantity of a green leafy substance which field-tested positive for marijuana. He was arraigned before City Court Judge John Connor sent to the Columbia County Jail without bail pending a return appearance in Hudson City Court.
- Jason E. McCagg, 19, of Livingston was charged with driving while intoxicated, a class U misdemeanor and leaving the scene of a property damage accident, an infraction, by Deputies Peter Grzeskow and Ted Blank, September 6 at 4:45 a.m. Columbia County 911 sent deputies to the area of Spook Rock and Stone Mill roads in Claverack for a one vehicle accident. The driver, Mr. McCagg, had left the scene, but deputies located him a short time later. They administered a breathalyzer test to Mr. McCagg, which revealed a .09% blood alcohol content. He was issued tickets returnable in Claverack Court at a later date.
- Tracy E. Dermody, 47, of Pittsfield, MA, was charged with driving while intoxicated by State Police from New Lebanon, September 13 at 9:10 p.m. Troopers stopped Ms. Dermody for failure to stop at a stop sign and failure to signal at the intersection of state routes 22 and 20, in New Lebanon. After interviewing Ms. Dermody, troopers determined she was intoxicated. She provided a breath sample with a .15% blood alcohol content and was issued traffic tickets returnable in New Lebanon Court September 25.
- Deborah Lynn Moran, 59, of Stockport was charged with making an improper turn/failure to signal and driving while intoxicated (felony, second offense) by Hudson Police Officer Nicolas Pierro at 119 Columbia Street, Hudson, September 16 at 1:52 a.m. Ms. Moran was pulled over for failing to use her turn signal and was subsequently found to be intoxicated. She had a prior conviction and refused to submit to a breath test. She was sent to the Columbia County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or bond pending a return appearance in Hudson City Court.
