HUDSON—Columbia County Board of Supervisors Chairman Matt Murell announced in a November 5 press release that a countywide burn ban has been declared and is to take effect immediately.
This follows the October 30 declaration of a countywide State of Emergency.
“We are in the middle of a drought, with no appreciable rain since August,” Columbia County Fire Coordinator George Keeler said in a press release.
“With the low humidity and the high winds, conditions are pretty ripe for a quickly moving brush fire. We’re obviously trying to avoid that,” he said.
The October 30 State of Emergency, initially in effect for a period not to exceed 30 days, was declared on the basis of the existing drought conditions, which threaten the public safety of the citizens of Columbia County.
“Under the State of Emergency, all departments and agencies of the county are directed to take the necessary steps to protect life and property, public infrastructure, and provide emergency assistance when necessary,” Chairman Murell said in the release.
