Campers have fun, become good citizens

GREENPORT—Eleven youngsters from Columbia County attended the 2016 New York State Sheriffs’ Association Institute’s Summer Camp recently, according to a press release from Columbia County Sheriff David P. Bartlett. The Sheriffs’ Summer Camp is designed to provide a recreational program combined with the development of good citizenship. This year marked the 39th year of the camp’s operation.

The camp, near Penn Yan in Yates County, is supported by the Sheriffs’ Association’s Honorary Members through their contributions and annual dues. This year the camp accommodated over 900 girls and boys from across the state.

This is a great opportunity for our county youth and I personally want to thank Columbia County residents for donating and making this possible,” Sheriff Bartlett said in the release.

This year’s attendees were: Madison Boughton, Juliana Boughton, Kameron Case, Lucas Hoffman, George Hunter, Robert Hunter, Ryley Livingston, Braden Myers, Finnegan Peterson, Elvis Race and Scott Rivenburg. Confidential Assistant Rebecca Milone coordinated the selection and administration of the children from Columbia County schools.

Deputies and camp counselors work to create a positive experience for the campers. Throughout their week-long stay, camp attendees participate in and observe special exhibits and demonstrations presented by Sheriffs’ Offices from across the state, including DARE presentations, boat and bike safety programs, law enforcement equipment and technical demonstrations, archery competitions multiple sporting events and a talent show. Upon completion of their stay, all children are awarded a diploma for their participation in a program of Good Citizenship and Law Enforcement Studies.
