KINDERHOOK–The up-and-down season of the Ichabod Crane boys baseball team continued Monday, when they fell at home, 9-0, to visiting Albany Academy in a Colonial Council match-up. Justin Brock, headed to Franklyn Pierce to play baseball, took the mound for Albany Academy and stymied the Riders offense, holding them to just four hits and three walks over the course of seven innings.
Jake Peters started on the mound for the Riders and had a rough opening inning, allowing five quick runs. A walk and a pair of singles to the first three batters of the game resulted in a 2-0 hole. Peters settled down over the next three innings, scattering four hits and keeping the deficit at five. In the fifth, Albany Academy struck again, this time for just one run using a single, a stolen base, a fielder’s choice and an infield single to bring home their sixth run.
In the third Peters’ control was off. He hit a batter and walked another along with giving up three singles and a double, as Albany Academy added on their final three runs. Nick Alberti took the hill for the final inning of relief and gave up a pair of walks and a single, but no runs.
At the plate the Riders struggled mightily to string together a consistent offensive threat off of Brock. In the first, Brandon Nelmes singled, but was stranded; same went for Alec Reeves in the second after drawing a walk. Nelmes singled again in the third, but was again left on base. The Riders best threat to pull across a run came in the sixth, as Denny Shields drew a one-out walk and Mike Ferrari followed that up with a single. After a foul out, Reeves drew another walk to load the bases, but all three runners were left on base after the Albany Academy second baseman, ranging to his left snagged a ball that got past the first baseman and threw to Brock who was covering first to get the final out of the inning.
Peters went 6 innings for the Riders allowing 9 earned runs on 15 hits, 3 walks and 1 hit batter, while striking out 1. Alberti allowed 1 hit and 2 walks in his one inning of relief work, while notching a pair of strikeouts.
Nelmes finished with 2 singles for ICC, Shields had a single and a walk, Reeves earned 2 walks and Ferrari added 1 single in the loss.
