One charged, another still sought

GERMANTOWN—State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation at Livingston and the Troop K Major Crimes Unit charged Mark J. Klawson, 29, of Red Hook with two counts of second degree robbery, class C felonies, August 6.

On June 27 State Police commenced an investigation into the armed robbery at the Blue Stores Xtra Mart, Livingston. On July 17, a second armed robbery was committed at the Germantown Xtra Mart.

A four-week-long investigation by State Police at Livingston, Troop K Major Crimes Unit and the Columbia County District Attorney’s Office resulted in the apprehension of a dangerous individual believed responsible for two armed robberies, according to a press release. The weapon used in the robberies, a silver/black semi-automatic pistol, was recovered during the investigation.

The investigation into these two armed robberies is ongoing. A second man was involved in the Germantown hold-up.

Mr. Klawson was arraigned in Livingston Court and sent to the Columbia County Jail without bail pending future court appearances.

Greenport

Delroy G. Williams, Jr., 28, of Hudson was charged with first degree robbery, a class B felony, in connection with the midnight July 28 armed robbery at the Route 66 Food Mart, according to a press release from Columbia County Sheriff David Harrison, Jr.

Mr. Williams was additionally charged with second degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class C felony, and fourth degree grand larceny, a class E felony.

Sheriff’s Office investigators along with deputies followed up on several leads and conducted numerous interviews that ultimately lead to this arrest. Information that was received from concerned Greenport residents which was also helpful in the investigation. Mr. Williams made admissions to investigators as to his involvement, the release said. A .38-caliber revolver which is believed to have been used by Mr. Williams during the robbery was recovered by investigators at a residence in Hudson.

Mr. Williams was arraigned in Greenport Court before Justice Robert Brenzel and sent to the Columbia County Jail in lieu of bail. Sheriff’s Office personnel involved in the investigation were Sr. Inv. William Foster, Investigator Patrick Logue, Investigators Mark Dunspaugh and Anthony Brahm. Deputies William Dunspaugh and Todd Hyson also assisted with processing and handling evidence.

Sheriff David W. Harrison Jr. commends the job done by all members who worked hard on this case.

Kinderhook

State Police investigated a two car personal injury accident at the intersection of State Route 9H and County Route 21, August 2 at 4:15 p.m.

A minivan operated by Valerie Honerkamp of Garden City was travelling southbound in the passing lane of 9H when she suddenly changed lanes moving into the path of a tractor trailer operated by Edward Barnett of Hudson. The minivan continued off the west shoulder of the roadway and struck a telephone pole. The tractor trailer also went off the west shoulder and overturned. Ms. Honerkamp and two children in her vehicle, ages 4 and 7, were taken by the Valatie Rescue Squad to Albany Medical Center. Mr. Barnett was taken to Columbia Memorial Hospital by the Greenport Rescue Squad. Kinderhook firefighters were on the scene to assist and provided traffic control.

West Copake

Fire ripped through a camp counselors’ bunkhouse at Camp Pontiac early Sunday morning, August 4 at 3:33 a.m., forcing an evacuation and a mutual aid response by area volunteers. According to a report from newsman Lance Wheeler who interviewed Copake Fire Chief David Proper, a female counselor heard a fan sparking then saw flames shoot from a wall in her dorm. The girls’ dorm housed 28 women. Counselors evacuated the burning building, then a camp-wide evacuation forced campers from their housing to safer ground. Buildings were close by on either side of the burning structure. There are about 1,000 campers and counselors at the camp, which is a sleep-away summer camp for boys and girls at 2044 County Route 7. Six fire companies: Copake, Ancram, Hillsdale, Craryville, Churchtown and Taghkanic were on the scene. Chief Proper said they were “real lucky”… it was “just a miracle no one got hurt.” Officials believe the origin of the fire may have been electrical. The Community Rescue Squad, the county Cause and Origin Team and the building inspector were also called to the scene.

Hudson

*Angela S. Heath, 39, of Philmont was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance and failure to stop at stop sign at 12 Worth Avenue by Hudson Police Officer Kevin Sweet, July 18 at 1:04 a.m.

Ms. Heath was pulled over for failure to stop at a stop sign at Warren Street and Worth Avenue. She allegedly possessed a glass smoking pipe with crack/cocaine inside it. She was released with an appearance ticket returnable in Hudson City Court at a later date.

*Tavaris A. Grant, 17, of Hudson was charged with fourth degree criminal mischief (intent to damage property) and second degree harassment (physical/repeated) at 15 North Front Street by Hudson Police Officer Mishanda Franklin Cox, July 18 at 11:25 a.m.

The teen allegedly threatened to kill a family member and damaged property. He was issued appearance tickets to answer both charges in Hudson City Court August 8.

*Hans Peter Spencer, 32, of Hudson was charged on a warrant for third degree assault (with intent to cause physical injury) by Hudson Police Officer Randy Clarke at 6 Green Street, July 18 at 9:50 p.m.

Mr. Spencer allegedly knocked a woman down during a July 12 dispute over a dog. He was issued an appearance ticket returnable in Hudson City Court at a later date.

Also charged on a warrant in connection with the same incident was Taran E. Nitsky, 29, of Hudson.

Hudson Police Officer Rodney Waithe charged Ms. Nitsky with second degree harassment (physical/repeated), July 19 at 8:58 p.m. Ms. Nitsky allegedly pushed the same woman victim several times during the same July 12 dispute over a dog. She was issued a ticket for a later Hudson City Court appearance.
