HILLSDALE–Livingston State Police charged two in connection with the theft of money from a farm stand, September 5.
Lawrence O’Dell, 50, of Claverack was charged with petit larceny, fourth degree criminal mischief and sixth degree conspiracy by Troopers M. Clark and C. Martino.
Mr. O’Dell allegedly damaged the cash lockbox at a farm stand to get it open and stole the cash inside. Also charged in connection with the case was Theresa Kelsey, 48, of Claverack on charges of petit larceny and sixth degree conspiracy. Both were released on appearance tickets returnable in Hillsdale Court.
Hudson
Mohammed Miah, 28, of Hudson was charged on a Columbia County probation warrant by Deputy Joshua Oakes, September 16 at 6:30 p.m. Mr. Miah was convicted of fourth degree criminal possession of stolen property November 25, 2008 in Columbia County Court and was subsequently sentenced to a period of probation. He allegedly violated terms and conditions of that probation and County Judge Jonathan Nichols issued the warrant. Taken into custody upon his release from the Ulster County Jail, Mr. Miah was sent to the Columbia County Jail pending further county court action.
*Richard Smith, 35, of Route 9 Hudson was charged on a probation warrant by Deputy Joshua Oakes, September 12 at 3:57 p.m.
Mr. Smith was sentenced to a term of probation following his conviction January 21, 2010 on a class E felony charge of driving while intoxicated. He allegedly violated that probation and County Judge Jonathan Nichols issued the warrant. Arraigned before Judge Nichols, Mr. Smith was sent to the county jail without bail pending further court proceedings.
*Deandre Smith, 28, of Hudson was charged with a violation of parole by Livingston Trooper A. Schraeder, September 3.
Mr. Smith was found to be wanted by the New York State Division of Parole. He was sent to the Columbia County Jail pending a parole hearing.
Germantown
Devan Marano, 25, of Germantown was charged on a probation warrant by Deputy Peter Grzeskow, September 17 at 7 p.m.
Ms. Marano was convicted January 10 on a charge of falsely reporting an incident to law enforcement and was subsequently sentenced to a period of probation. She allegedly violated the terms and conditions of that probation and Columbia County Judge Jonathan Nichols issued the warrant. Taken into custody without incident, Ms. Marano was sent to the county jail without bail pending further court action.
Valatie
Elmanuel Casiano, 49, of Valatie was charged with second degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and unlicensed operation by Kinderhook State Police, September 20 at 9 a.m.
Troopers were aware that Mr. Casiano did not have a license and saw him driving on State Route 9. Troopers pulled him over and confirmed he had 10 suspensions on his driver’s license. Mr. Casiano was arraigned in Kinderhook Town Court and was released to reappear at a later date.
Flags replaced, out of woodchuck reach
Undaunted by one or more flag-swiping woodchucks caught on film by Hudson Police in July, Vincent Wallace set out to build a better flag holder. Mr. Wallace, an Army vet and volunteer caretaker of the Republic Civil War section of Cedar Park Cemetery, thinks a stronger, taller flag holder that woodchucks can’t get to has arrived. The new holder is 34” high, made of steel and replaces the old flag plastic holders that were only 10” high. The 42 new flag holders cost about $300. This summer woodchucks had a field day stealing the graveyard flags and stashing them in their underground dens. On September 16, Mr. Wallace and 30 representatives of the American Legion, VFW, Sons of Union Vets, Boy Scouts and volunteers replaced the flags in the new and improved holders.
Alcohol
The following face alcohol-related charges:
*Rebecca Sullivan, 34, of Castleton was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, refusal to submit to a breath test and unlicensed operation by Livingston Trooper C. Taylor, September 2.
Police stopped Ms. Sullivan on Healy Boulevard, Greenport for erratic operation. She was found to be intoxicated and driving with a minor in the vehicle. She was released with tickets to appear in Greenport Court.
*Demetrius Harris, 27, of Arverne was charged with driving while intoxicated, unlicensed operation, inadequate exhaust and other vehicle and traffic violations by Livingston State Police, September 23 at 3:30 a.m. Troopers pilled over Mr. Harris’ 1998 Nissan on Rope Alley, Hudson for multiple violations and found him to be intoxicated. He submitted to a breath test with a .17% blood alcohol content result. He was arraigned in Greenport Court and sent to the Columbia County Jail in lieu of $2,500 cash bail or $5,000 bond to appear in Hudson Court at a later date.

Firefighters complete more training
GREENPORT–The Columbia County Fire Coordinator’s Office announces that the following volunteer firefighters have completed continuing education for their respective communities.
Chatham fire Station hosted nine sessions of Firefighter II training with Wayne Gearing as the lead instructor. Graduates were Joseph Alecksynas, Eric Barnes, Douglas Bush, Jordan Braham, Michael Dutcher, Matthew Fischer, Brent Gawron, Spencer Hotaling, Evan Kerr, Brandon Montie, Rick Newton, Matthew Pirrone, Paul Pratt, Paul Rideout, Jonathan Riemenschneider, Dan VanAllen, Pat Wemitt and Gary Wood. Instructors assisting Mr. Gearing were Mike Stelling, Dave Shultis and Melissa Eigenbrodt.
Joe Laviano and Ms. Eigenbrodt taught a Rescue Technician basic course at Niverville Fire Department. Successful attendees were Joseph Alecksynas, Jeremy Cromie, Christopher Dedrick, Gene Gaylord, Wayne Gearing, Peter Harvey, Christopher Hawley, Robert Hawley, Jr., Robert Hawley, Sr., James Hogancamp, Cody Huyck, Wayne Huyck, Stephanie LaBelle, Donald Mackey, James Rapp, Timothy Stever, Davis Shultis, Henry Swartz, Jr. and Lance Rowe.
Hillsdale Fire Company was the location of a water supply operations training under the veteran tutelage of Mr. Laviano and Ted Beck. Completing the six class training were Theodore Beck, Robert Briggs, Jr., Richard Briggs, Nathan Chess, Kevin Grau, Traci Lane, Frank Langdon, Fred Miller, Bruce Miller, Joshua Stalker, Douglas Swartz, Tylie Winters, Robert Adriance and Adam Kitsock.
New Lebanon fire station was the scene of an accident victim extrication training (AVET), with Mr. Laviano as lead instructor and mutual aid supplied by Bud Godfroy. Successful dismantlers were Douglas Blish, Leonard Blish, Robert Borovich, Patricia Cochrane, Kevin Darcy, Lance Dragonetti, Michael Dutcher, Daniel Evans, Matthew Fischer, Traci Lane, Maryann Laspada, Frank Lill, Jr., Sharon Moon, Joseph Reiger, Gaston Robert, Jr., John Sheehy, Mark Sheline, Aaron Sweet and William Wallace.
Greenport Station 2 sponsored a one-night water rescue awareness course presented by Instructor Laviano. Participants included Robert Banks, Jr., Issac Bogucki, John Calderon, Douglas Garrison, Chris Groll, Jr., Chad Hawver, Stewart Hunt, Phillip Kenny, Frank Langdon, Sarah Langdon, David Naughton, John Onufrychuk, Jr., Jonathan Riemenschneider, Fredrick Rivenburgh, III, and Tylie Winters.
