Alleged shopping spree with no payments made lands man in jail

GREENPORT–A Hudson man was jailed after he allegedly spent most of his evening swiping goods from Walmart.

Mohammed H. Morshed, 21, was charged with fourth degree criminal possession of stolen property, a class E felony, by Livingston State Police, July 25.

At about 1 a.m., troopers were called to the Greenport store because a man was being detained by Asset Protection personnel for shoplifting. Further investigation revealed that the man, identified as Mr. Morshed, had allegedly been stealing items at the store for several hours and stashing them in his vehicle in the parking lot. The arrest resulted in the recovery of more than $1,000 in stolen merchandise.

Arraigned in Greenport Court before Town Justice Robert Brenzel, Mr. Morshed was sent to the Columbia County Jail in lieu of $2,500 cash bail or $5,000 bond.

West Lebanon

New Lebanon State Police were kept busy charging attendees of the Monster Jam, an annual monster truck show at Lebanon Valley Speedway, July 16 through 18.

State Police report the following associated arrests:

*Joseph M. Gaudet, 25, of New Lebanon was charged with driving while intoxicated and third degree aggravated unlicensed operation after a traffic stop for erratic operation on Route 20, July 16 at 10:15 p.m. Troopers saw the Gaudet vehicle exit the speedway onto State Route 20 and travel east. The vehicle was also seen crossing road hazard markings. Field tests were administered and a breath test resulted in a .12% blood alcohol content. He was issued tickets returnable in New Lebanon Court.

*Laura L. Champagne, 40, of Stamford, VT, was charged with driving while intoxicated after a traffic stop on Route 20, July 17. Troopers stopped the vehicle because the front seat passenger failed to wear his seatbelt. Ms. Champagne could not perform field sobriety tests. A breath test resulted in a .09% blood alcohol content. She was issued a ticket returnable in New Lebanon Court.

*Jennifer Johnson, 30, of Wilmington was charged with driving while ability impaired after a traffic stop on Adams Crossing Road. She was issued tickets to appear in New Lebanon Court.

*Gregory Leach, 24, of New Lebanon was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs and unlawful possession of marijuana after a traffic stop on Route 20. He was issued tickets to appear in New Lebanon Court.

Troopers from the New Lebanon and Livingston barracks also investigated eight accidents and incidents on and around speedway grounds during the three-day event.

 

Columbia County

Sheriff’s deputies and agents from the state Liquor Authority conducted an underage alcohol sales detail at 13 convenience stores throughout the county, July 19.

The following were charged with misdemeanor prohibited sale of an alcoholic beverage, a violation of the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Law:

*Michael T. Addesso, 19, of Catskill, employed by Hess Greenport, ticketed to appear in Greenport Court, August 13.

*Etta Shultis, 66, of Hudson, employed by Mobil Claverack, ticketed to appear in Claverack Court, August 14.

*Tabitha St. Clair, 29, of Livingston, employed by the Livingston Xtra Mart (Routes 9 and 82), ticketed to appear in Livingston Court, August 16.

*James Propst, 62, of Craryville, employed by Mobil (Routes 9H and 23B) Claverack , ticketed to appear in Claverack Court, August 14.

An 18-year-old undercover operative attempted to buy alcohol at the convenience stores. Nine of the thirteen establishments did not sell alcohol to the operative. Those establishments were: Tam’s Greenport, Mobil Greenport, Stewart’s Greenport, Stewart’s Germantown, Xtra Mart Germantown, Sunoco Germantown, Blue Stores Xtra Mart Livingston, Taconic Mart Taghkanic and Cobble Pond Farms Routes 9H and 66 Claverack.

The Drug Enforcement and Education Unit, Sr. Inv. William Foster and Deputy Wendy Guntert were assisted by Deputies Todd Hyson and William Dunspaugh and agents from the state Liquor Authority.

 

Clermont

Deputy Joshua Oakes investigated a one-car personal injury accident on State Route 9G, north of the Firehouse Road intersection, May 9 at 2:53 p.m.

Nicole Drabick, 36, of Hudson was driving her 1995 Chevrolet sedan north on Route 9G, when she ran off the roadway, crashed through a fence belonging to Michael Steeneck and hit a utility pole before coming to rest against a tree. She was taken to St. Francis Hospital by the Northern Dutchess Paramedics for evaluation.

Livingston

Richard W. Williams, 38, of Livingston was charged with second degree strangulation and obstruction of breathing, May 11 at 11:30 p.m. Livingston troopers responded to a 911 call reporting a disturbance at 3326 State Route 9.

Following an investigation they charged Mr. Williams who was subsequently arraigned in Greenport Court and sent to the Columbia County Jail in lieu of $2,500 cash bail or $5,000 bond. He was scheduled to reappear in Livingston Court.

 

Drugs/alcohol

The following face drug and/or alcohol-related charges:

*Daniel Bennett, 39, of Claverack was charged with driving while intoxicated by Livingston Trooper M. Radewitz, May 5. Police stopped Mr. Bennett on State Route 9H, Claverack for vehicle and traffic law violations and found him to be intoxicated. He was released with tickets returnable in Claverack Court.

*Carl B. Smith, 58, of Valatie was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated and vehicle and traffic violations by State Police, May 6 at 2:10 p.m. Troopers responded to the area of 2967 State Route 9, Kinderhook for a 911 call reporting an erratic vehicle. Troopers saw a 2000 Nissan pickup moving from its lane unsafely. They determined that the driver Mr. Smith was intoxicated. A breath test resulted in a .26% blood alcohol content. He was issued tickets returnable to Kinderhook Court.
