Two men charged for home burglary in Ghent

GHENT–Sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene of a burglary in progress on Ostrander Road, Sunday, April 1 at 1:23 p.m.

Homeowners arrived at their residence to find two people in the act of burglarizing their house, according to a press release from Sheriff David Harrison, Jr.

The burglars were not armed and they fled the home when confronted by the homeowners. No one was injured.

Dispatchers sent out descriptions of the suspects and their vehicle to local law enforcement agencies and the suspects were quickly found in the Village of Chatham by Chatham Police Officer Michael Daley, who stopped them on Coleman Street.

Sheriff’s Office Investigator Mark Dunspaugh, Sr., Investigator Kevin Skype and Deputy Andrew Broockmann charged Andrew Simmons, 23, of Philmont and Brandon Maisenbacher, 22, of Stottville with second degree burglary, a class C felony, and petit larceny, a class A misdemeanor. They were arraigned before Hudson City Court Judge Mark Portin and sent to the county jail without bail and directed to return to City Court at a later date.

Deputies, investigators and Sheriff’s Office evidence technicians were assisted by District Attorney Paul Czajka and Assistant DA Dave Costanzo.

The investigation is continuing and the Sheriff’s Office is working with the Columbia County District Attorney’s Office and the State Police on other burglaries in the area and additional charges are possible. Anyone with information about Mr. Simmons’ and Mr. Maisenbacher’s possible involvement in other burglaries is asked to call investigators at 518 828-4316.

*Sheriff’s patrols were called by County 911 to the Edgewood Acres Mobile Home Park, Route 203 for a party with loud music and drinking, March 25

at 1:22 a.m.

Deputies found that an 18-year-old female was hosting a party at her residence, where underage individuals were drinking alcoholic beverages.  The teenager lives at the residence with her father, who was in New Jersey at the time of the party. When contacted, he told deputies that he did not give permission or have knowledge of the party at his residence.

Eric Peterson, 20, and Stephen Pabon, 20, both of Hudson and 16 other youths ranging in age from 16 to 18 years old, who reside in Columbia County and one who lives in Troy, were each charged with the unlawful possession of an alcoholic beverage by a person under 21. All those charged were issued appearance tickets directing them to appear in Ghent Court April 16. They were all turned over to parents or guardians over 21, who had not been drinking. The investigation is continuing at this time and additional charges are possible.

 

Copake Falls

Sheriff’s deputies were called to the Taconic State Park for a reported missing hiker Saturday March 31, 6:31 p.m.

Initial reports were that a 21-year-old hiker from New York City was separated from his hiking group. Other members of the group called 911 after they were unable to find the missing hiker when they were separated on the trail. Deputies established a command post at the park. Sheriff’s Office and State Police K-9 units, the Sheriff’s Office All-Terrain-Vehicle Unit, state forest rangers and the state park police were on their way to help with the search when the hiker was found by Deputy William Dunspaugh walking on State Route 22 in Copake. He was not hurt and was reunited with his party.

 

Greenport

For the fourth time in a month Greenport Police charged Clarence Risch, 42, of Hudson. On March 10, Mr. Risch was charged with fourth degree criminal mischief, petit larceny and trespass after he allegedly attempted to steal shoes, a cell phone and a phone card valued at $98 from Walmart. He was arraigned and posted $250 bail.

On March 22, he was charged with petit larceny after he was caught allegedly stealing a pair of work boots valued at $115 from Tractor Supply. He was arraigned and posted $250 bail.

On March 25, he was charged with third degree burglary and petit larceny after he allegedly stole a 42-inch Vizio TV valued at $482 from Walmart. On March 26, he was charged with third degree burglary and fourth degree grand larceny after allegedly stealing a 55-inch Samsung TV valued at $1,686 from Walmart. He was arraigned on the March 25 and 26 charges and bail was set at $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond.

Greenport Police Chief Kevin Marchetto said in a press release that Mr. Risch has a long criminal history totaling over 78 arrests dating back to 1989. Officers Cory Cox, Christopher Duntz, Sgt. Jerald Rowell and Sgt . Steve Keyser investigated the cases.

 

West Lebanon

Jonathon Rounds, 19, of West Lebanon was charged with two counts of fourth degree criminal mischief and one count of unlawful possession of marijuana by Trooper Nicholas Lombardi, March 26.

Police say Mr. Rounds became angry when a bong, a water pipe used for smoking marijuana and other drugs, was broken.

So irate was he over the broken pipe that he allegedly kicked a hole in the wall of his mother’s residence, smashed a potted plant and ripped the telephone line out of the junction box outside so she couldn’t call the police. He was arraigned in New Lebanon Court and released on his own recognizance. He will return to court April 26.

 

Lebanon Springs

David Dunavin, 39, of New Lebanon was charged with third degree assault, endangering the welfare of a child and seventh degree criminal possession of a controlled substance by Troopers Nicholas Lombardi and Bryan Cloutier, March 26. Mr. Dunavin allegedly got into a dispute with a woman during which he allegedly punched her in the face and body in front of her young son in their Lebanon Springs residence. The woman was taken to the Berkshire Medical Center for treatment of broken ribs. Mr. Dunavin was found in to have three Alprazolam pills, a/k/a Xanax. He was arraigned in New Lebanon Court and sent to the Columbia County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail. He will return to court April 26.

 

Chatham

Corey Hoag, 29, of Chatham was charged with disorderly conduct, second degree burglary, first degree criminal contempt, aggravated criminal contempt and third degree assault by Trooper E. Harris and Investigator E. Barnes, March 20.

Mr. Hoag allegedly got into a dispute with a woman and allegedly bit the woman on the cheek. He also allegedly threatened the woman and destroyed property in the residence. He had fled the scene prior to troopers’ arrival. It was also determined that Mr. Hoag had been at the dispute location in violation of a court order of protection.

He was found the next day and charged, then turned over to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office on charges they had pending against Mr. Hoag.

He was arraigned in Chatham Town Court and was sent to the Columbia County Jail without bail.
