CHATHAM—A Claverack man died at the scene of a car accident on Route 66, August 4 at 11:43 a.m.
Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the accident scene, where someone had reported to County 911 that a vehicle was off the road.
A deputy arrived to find that the driver, Geoffrey N. Smith, 71, was unresponsive. The vehicle doors were locked and the car was still in gear. Deputies and two passing motorists, who had stopped to help, got into the vehicle by breaking the rear window, Sheriff David W Harrison, Jr. said in a press release.
Mr. Smith was not breathing and had no pulse. The Chatham Rescue Squad began CPR, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation revealed that Mr. Smith was driving north just north of High Bridge Road. For an unknown reason, the Smith vehicle crossed into the southbound lane and struck an earth embankment on the west side of the road. The vehicle continued northbound and came to rest off the road in a swampy area on the west side of Route 66.
The investigation is continuing. Captain David Bartlett, Senior Investigator William Foster, Investigator Anthony Brahm, Sergeant William Zincio, Deputies Todd Hyson and Wendy Guntert and Coroner Angelo Nero were on the scene along with the Chatham Fire Department, Chatham Fire Police, who assisted with traffic control, and the Sheriff’s Incident/Accident Scene Investigation Unit.
