RAVENA — Whether funny or spooky, it’s time to get those creative juices flowing for the village’s first-ever scarecrow contest.
The “Village of Ravena Spooky Scarecrow Contest” is being held this month, with residents encouraged to put up their best scary or funny scarecrow — and dress up the village for the fall at the same time.
Mayor Bill Misuraca announced the contest at the village board’s September meeting.
“The village is awesome — everybody decorates for Christmas and we have the lights contest,” Misuraca said. “This year, we are hoping to make your best scary or funny scarecrow right in your own front yard.”
Scarecrows can be funny or scary or themed. It’s up to you to let your imagination run wild.
“Go all out,” said Misuraca, adding that the contest was his mother’s idea.
The contest, which will offer prizes at the end, gives everyone the chance to get involved in a low-cost manner, the mayor added.
“There’s a couple of local farms that have all the straw and pumpkins you might need to make this happen,” he said. “We thought this was a good contest because a lot of times with the Christmas contest, you’ve got to have pretty deep pockets to buy all the lights and it’s a commitment. With this, if you’ve got some old clothes laying around, you and the kids — or just the grown-ups — can have a good time with it. I thought it would make the village look kind of festive for fall.”
Scarecrows should remain at their posts through the month of October. The village board members will be the judges and like the Christmas decoration contest, will travel around the village checking out all the entrants.
“We will probably drive around on Halloween weekend to judge,” Deputy Mayor Nancy Warner said.
There will be three prizes awarded.
“It’s a $100 gift card for first place, $75 for second and $50 for third, probably at a local store,” Misuraca said.
The winners will be announced Nov. 1.
“It’s something fun that everyone can enjoy,” Misuraca said.
