RAVENA-COEYMANS-SELKIRK — Local athletes took to the field and the court Thursday for the first time as the Ravens.
The new team name replaced the Indians, which the school has used as its moniker and mascot for 70 years after the state pressured school districts with names representative of Native Americans with the loss of state funding and other penalties.
The new team name wasn’t the only change this season. There are plenty of new faces on the field and on the court, with new coaches as well.
The fall sports season got underway last week with dozens of athletes making their season debut.
Boys’ varsity soccer opened the season with a loss Sept. 4 against La Salle 6-2, but followed that up with a win 3-2 against Schoharie two days later, both in away games.
The girls’ soccer team came away with their first win of the season, shutting out the La Salle Institute Cadets 3-0 Thursday on their home turf.
The opening day wasn’t as successful for the football and girls’ volleyball teams.
The Ravens football team lost their first game Friday on the gridiron in an away game against Columbia by a score of 28-7. It was the first game led by new Head Coach Eric Stott, who took over head coaching duties from former longtime coach Gary Vanderzee. Vanderzee retired at the conclusion of the 2023 season after 40 years with the team.
The girls’ volleyball team also took a loss on their first day of the new season Thursday. After winning the first set against La Salle 25-23, the team would end the match with a 2-3 loss.
Other fall varsity sports offered at RCS this season include cheerleading, cross country, golf, boys’ soccer, girls’ swimming and diving, and girls’ tennis.
This week’s games and matches were too late for publication in the News-Herald, but the golf season was set to start this Monday against Troy, followed by a matchup against Albany Academy on Tuesday. Tuesday was slated to be opening day for girls’ tennis against Albany Academy on their home court. Girls’ swimming and diving will start their season Sept. 16 at Albany High School, and both girls’ and boys’ cross country will open Sept. 17 at Mohonasen.
