RAVENA-COEYMANS-SELKIRK — The RCS School District announced Thursday that John Thorson, retired principal from Chatham, will continue to serve as the interim high school assistant principal through June 30, 2025.

The decision comes after an extensive search for a permanent candidate to begin work at RCS in December of 2024. Although there were some qualified candidates, the applicant pool lacked sufficient depth and diversity to progress to committee interviews at this time, according to a statement from the district.

Thorson was initially hired to work as an interim at RCS from August to December of 2024. His willingness to extend his time with the high school until June of 2025 will allow the district to repost the high school assistant principal position in late winter of 2025.

District officials say they anticipate “a much richer pool of candidates at that time.”

Thorson has been with RCS since the beginning of the school year. Feedback from staff and students has been overwhelmingly positive and the partnership with Principal Ryan Funck has yielded a very welcoming and productive start to the school year, according to the district.

“We will communicate with our community again when we post for a permanent replacement for this important position later this year,” according to the district.
