Allie Mae Edwards

Allie Mae Edwards, 84, of Ravena, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2024.

The youngest of seven, she was born in Charlotteville, Schoharie County, New York, to her late parents Fird and Polly (Barry) Becker. She married her husband Raymond in 1956 and they had five children in Central Bridge before moving to Ravena in 1971.

Allie was a force to be reckoned with. She could brighten anyone’s day with her quick-witted banter and sense of humor. She loved to spend time outdoors in the sunshine tending to her garden, surrounded by her wind chimes and knick-knacks. She was an avid animal lover, owning many dogs and cats throughout her lifetime. Allie will be remembered as a fierce woman with a strong exterior and a tender heart for her loved ones.

She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond “Razor” Edwards Sr., brothers Hauser, Clarence and Archie Becker, sister Mary Hendrickson, and daughter Brenda Mae Nowak.

Allie is survived by her brother, Robert Becker and sister, Ethel Meade; her four children, Candance Bender (Jerry) of Greenville, Melody Frederickson (Jeff) of Cortland, Raymond Edwards Jr. (Lorie) of Rensselaer, and Tracy Edwards of Syracuse. She will be deeply missed by all of her grandchildren, Shawn Bender (Rachel), Shana Circe (Michael), Shara Bender, Christian Beaudry, Gabrielle Harvey (Matt), Brittany Simon, Raymond Edwards, Skylor Edwards (Kayla), Preston Lendin (Desiree), Beckie Nowak (Christopher B.), Stevie Nowak (Christopher P.), and Katie Carleton (Jake).

She is also survived by many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 8, at 11 a.m. at the Langan Funeral Home, 327 Main Street Schoharie with interment following in the Bramanville Prospect Cemetery and finally a luncheon at Chieftan’s in Cobleskill. Friends may call prior to the service starting at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow the services at Bramanville Prospect Cemetery in Howes Caves, New York.

ALBANY — The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has announced the start of several small-game hunting seasons in the coming weeks.

WATERFOWL HUNTING

New York offers vast waterfowl hunting opportunities as hunters may harvest more than 30 species of waterfowl.

New York has five waterfowl zones and nine Canada goose zones that help to maximize hunting opportunity across diverse habitats.

Most waterfowl zones also have special hunting days for youth and members of the military (both active duty and veterans) that often begin prior to the regular hunting season, giving these hunters the opportunity to hunt with less hunting pressure.

Remaining Youth Waterfowl Days:

  • Western Zone: Sept. 30 and Oct. 1
  • Long Island Zone: Nov. 4 and 5

Remaining Military and Veteran Hunting Days:

  • Western Zone: Oct. 7 and Jan. 20
  • Long Island Zone: Nov. 11 and 12

There are no special Military/Veteran days for the Lake Champlain Zone.

Opening dates for the Regular Duck Seasons:

  • Northeast and Lake Champlain Zones: Oct. 7
  • Western and Southeast Zones: Oct. 21
  • Long Island Zone: Nov. 18

RUFFED GROUSE HUNTING
Ruffed grouse hunting season runs from Oct. 1 through the last day of February in most parts of the state. In Northern New York, the season opened on Sept. 20, and runs through the last day of February. In New York City and Long Island, the season is closed.

Ruffed grouse hunters in the Northern Zone are reminded to positively identify quarry before shooting. The Northern Zone, specifically Wildlife Management Units 5C, 5F, 6F, and 6J, is also home to the spruce grouse, a state-endangered species that is illegal to hunt. Loss of a single spruce grouse, particularly a female, could be a significant setback for a small local population. For tips on how to discern the two species, view the Hunting and Trapping Regulations Guide or the Ruffed Grouse Hunting Information page on DEC’s website at dec.ny.gov.

DEC encourages ruffed grouse hunters to take part in the grouse hunting log program and submit feathers from harvested birds to assess recruitment (number of young produced per adult female grouse) for different parts of the state.

PHEASANT SEASON

During the spring of 2023, the Reynold’s Game Farm suffered a Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza outbreak in the breeder flock. After enacting precautionary measures to ensure the facility was properly decontaminated, DEC secured a contract to acquire 30,000 pheasants from a commercial hatchery to supplement fall upland bird hunting opportunities around the state.

Prior to hunting seasons, DEC will release adult pheasants on lands open to public hunting for the upcoming fall pheasant hunting season. The pheasant hunting season begins:

  • Oct. 1, in northern and eastern portions of New York
  • Oct. 21, in central and western portions of the state
  • Nov. 1, on Long Island

Since 2007, DEC has offered a special youth-only season to provide junior hunters the opportunity to hunt pheasants during the weekend prior to the regular pheasant hunting season. In Western New York, the youth pheasant hunt weekend is Oct. 14 and 15. In northern and eastern New York, the youth pheasant hunt weekend was Sept. 23 and 24, and on Long Island, it is Oct. 28 and 29. Both the junior hunter and their adult mentor must have a hunting license. Only the junior hunter can carry a firearm and harvest birds on these dates.

SQUIRREL, RABBIT AND HARE HUNTING

Opportunities to pursue squirrels and rabbits can be found throughout the state, including on many public lands. Squirrel seasons started Sept. 1 in Upstate New York and begin Nov. 1 on Long Island. Rabbit hunting begins on Oct. 1 in Upstate New York and on Nov. 1 on Long Island. With ample opportunities and mild weather, squirrel and rabbit hunting are great ways to introduce novices to hunting.

Snowshoe hare (or varying hare) season starts Oct. 1 in the Northern Zone. Hare hunters in the Southern Zone, where the season starts in late fall or early winter, are encouraged to report their observations to DEC through the DEC website at dec.ny.gov.

WILD TURKEY HUNTING

Wild turkeys can be found throughout the state but reach their highest densities in landscapes that have a mix of forests, old fields, and farmlands. Wild turkeys are less vulnerable to harvest in areas with abundant food (e.g., hard and soft mast), because they don’t have to roam far and wide foraging, so scouting before the season is important. The statewide fall season bag limit is one bird of either sex. Hunting hours are sunrise to sunset.

Season dates for fall 2023:

  • Oct. 1-14, in the Northern Zone
  • Oct. 21 to Nov. 3, in the Southern Zone (corrected dates**)
  • Nov. 18 to Dec. 1 in Suffolk County, Long Island

FURBEARER HUNTING SEASON
With 16 species of furbearers living in New York, furbearer hunting and trapping opportunities are abundant.

Coyote hunting season begins Oct. 1 across much of the state and hunting seasons for other furbearers such as bobcat, raccoon, and fox begin on Oct. 25. Season dates and zone boundaries for all furbearers and other hunting information including tips for identifying coyotes can be found on DEC’s website at dec.ny.gov and in the Hunting and Trapping Regulations Guide.

HUNTER SAFETY

While statistics show hunting in New York is safer than ever, mistakes are made every year. DEC believes every hunting-related shooting incident is preventable, and Commissioner Basil Seggos encourages hunters to use common sense this season and to remember what they learned in their DEC Hunter Education Course.

Firearms safety:

  • Point your gun in a safe direction.
  • Treat every gun as if it were loaded.
  • Be sure of your target and beyond.
  • Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.

In addition to blaze orange or pink being required for hunting big game with firearms, DEC encourages small game hunters to wear blaze orange or blaze pink. Wearing orange or pink prevents other hunters from mistaking a person for an animal or shooting in a hunter’as direction. Hunters wearing blaze orange are seven times less likely to be shot.

RAVENA — Local artistic talent will be celebrated during the first-ever We Love aRtCS Music and Art Festival in May.

On Thursday, local business owners and organizers of the inaugural event gathered in front of Gabler Realty on Main Street to contribute to the cause and voice their support.

“We are donating funds to support the creation of this arts festival and to be able to support arts in this community,” said Pastor Chuck Engelhardt from Abounding Love Christian Fellowship Church.

The festival is the joint brainchild of a local grassroots group that got its start on social media and blossomed from there.

“I started with some other people the I Love RCS Facebook group and a few of us decided to do a little offshoot project to have a street arts and music festival,” co-organizer Ted Smith said. “One thing led to another and we partnered with the group RCS Friends of the Arts, who support arts programming, sort of like a PTO for the arts in the schools, but also they try to fund kids’ art opportunities.”

The two groups got together to organize the May festival, a project that dovetailed perfectly with the mission of the RCS Friends of the Arts.

“We raise funds to support the students who have passion for the arts,” said President Donna Hommel. “Just like the Sports Association raises funds for students who are in sports, we decided we felt those kids who really have a passion for the arts don’t have that same support, so we created this organization.”

The RCS Friends of the Arts will give out their first three scholarships to graduating RCS students in June — one for a music student, one for art and one for a special education student who participates in any music or art activity outside their classroom.

The We Love aRtCS group tried to make its first foray into an arts festival during the annual village Friendship Festival last year, but pandemic restrictions made that difficult, Smith said.

“We sort of started last year with the Friendship Festival where we wanted to try it, but because of COVID, schools weren’t really rehearsing so we couldn’t do music, but we did do art stuff. But this is the first real festival we are doing,” Smith said.

The festival, which will be held on Railroad Avenue and in the parking lot of Trackside Pizza, will feature several select ensembles from the RCS school district, including the jazz bands and select choruses from both the middle and high school, the high school drama club and several community bands, Smith said.

“We will put a stage in the parking lot at Trackside Pizza and have some vendors that will be selling arts and crafts types of things, and also we’ll have some art on display, mostly by students, but some community art, too,” Smith said.

The local murals that have been cropping up around Main Street — particularly the one at the pizza restaurant — proved inspirational for the festival itself.

“We thought, ‘This is great — let’s capitalize on that,’” Smith said.

Main Street — at the heart of the village — was selected specifically for the event.

“We care a lot about RCS and Ravena is the center of the entire district,” Smith said. “We want to bring some energy to downtown Ravena and we don’t want it to just be a route through town, we want it to be a place where people can actually live and enjoy life here.”

Co-organizer Bridget Engelhardt said the festival grew out of a love for the arts and a desire to support them.

“This grew organically,” Bridget Engelhardt said. “Ted [Smith] and Caitlin [Appleby] and I were chatting about the arts — it started with the murals — and we all really value the arts and wanted to bring a focus to them.”

Appleby, who was elected to the Ravena Village Board in March, has organized the village’s Friendship Festival for years and wanted to lend a hand with the arts festival as well.

“I think this festival will highlight a lot of our culture that otherwise gets no spotlight on it,” said Appleby, the group’s treasurer. “I feel like there is a lot of talent in this area that doesn’t have a venue to be exposed. We have never done anything that highlights strictly music and art, so I think this will bring different people out and be a fun community day.”

Judi Gabler, owner of Gabler Realty and a donor to the festival, said her love of the arts has been deep-rooted in the local area since her years at RCS High School.

“I was really into the music program — Mr. Baxter was my music teacher back in the day — and also in the art program and theater. I was in theater for all four years of high school,” Gabler said. “I think it is really important to embrace it for the community and I wanted to be a big part of this, so I am very excited.”

The We Love aRtCS Festival will be held May 14 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Railroad Avenue. There is no admission fee.
