News Herald – November 14, 1924 – F.E. Bleezarde, Publisher

Coeymans:

  • There was a large attendance at the chicken pie supper in the M.E. church on Wednesday evening.
  • The town board of auditors have been in session auditing bills against the town, and if there are any persons having claims against the town, they are requested to present them.
  • The Ladies Auxiliary of the Fire Department will give a card party in the firehouse on Monday evening, Nov. 24. An invitation is extended to all to attend. Refreshments will be served. Tickets are 50 cents each. You will help the ladies to earn money for a good cause if you attend.
  • Thieves traveling in an automobile with a trailer behind visited the cornfield at the Blasidell farm one night recently, but were discovered by Mr. Blasidell and his son and left without any booty. A large amount of corn on the cob was piled in the field and the stalks were in shocks. Shots were fired by both Mr. Blasidell and the intruders, neither causing any person injury.
  • A great improvement has been made on the west side of Main Street at Westerlo Street where the State Road joins the concrete blocks. The concrete surface drain has been replaced by a tile drain with a concrete surface, and the result is more room for autos to make the turn and a better crossing for pedestrians.

Ravena:

  • On the move at last. The various departments of the New York Central Railroad at this place have been busy the past week moving to the new round houses and shops north of South Bethlehem, and what looks like the final order for the transfer of railroad activities from Ravena to the new location will go into effect on the four o’clock shift tomorrow. The entire force from the round house will be on hand on Sunday evening.
  • The closing dance of the season will be held at Finke’s pavilion on Saturday evening, Nov. 15.
  • A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Archie Whipple on Monday. She has been named Dorothy Frances.
  • The local chapter of The Daughters of America will welcome their state deputy, Mrs. Miner of Scotia, at a reception in their rooms Friday night of this week. The affair will also include a shower for the candy booth of the fair to be held by the organization, Dec. 10, 11, and 12.
  • The fire alarm system, which has been on course of construction and erection by George Pebler, for the Ravena Hose Company is all ready for the representative of the system who is expected at any time to connect and test the same. The signals have all been arranged and everything is in readiness to put the system into immediate use if it proves a success, and answers the specifications given the fire company.

  • The board of town auditors met at the town house Thursday last and audited claims against the town to the amount of $1,209.69.
  • Mr. Marvin Sutton has completed burning two kilns of brick, his first experiment, and was highly successful. His yard did not commence operations until late in the season but have had quite a prosperous one.
  • Boats are experiencing considerable delays by the heavy fogs which regularly occur mornings of late.
  • The struggle between man and stubborn stove pipe is disturbing many a household in this vicinity.
