Coeymans:

  • Frank VanHoesen killed a black snake that measured over four feet in length Sunday afternoon near his father’s home on South Main Street.
  • Worthy Matron Edna Hazelton of Coeymans Chapter No. 464 Order of the Eastern Star attended the annual session of the Grand Chapter in New York this week.
  • Mrs. Matthew VanDerzee entertained at dinner Friday for guests Mrs. John Everard, Mrs. Sidney J. Wagoner, Mrs. Jesse J. McCarty, Mrs. Chas. V. Wagoner and children, Mrs. Paul VanSlyke and Miss Helen Wagoner.
  • A meeting of the fire company was held in their meeting room on Monday evening at which time the by-laws were read and adopted, and initiation fees collected from 32 members. Others who are desirous of becoming members are requested to see the financial secretary.
  • The masquerade and box party at the Coeymans Reformed Church on the evening of Thursday, Oct. 30, will bring out the most elaborate and varied costume display of the season. Costumes will be divided into three classes: funny, clever and pretty, and prizes will be given for the best in each class. Those who come unmasked will pay a fine for being out of harmony with the spirit of the evening.

Ravena:

  • Some mischievous person threw a large stone and broke the glass of the bulletin board on the Christian Church property on Friday night last.
  • You will see—3,000 actors, 300 covered wagons, a 2-mile train, 600 oxen, 1,000 Indians, 3,000 horses in “The Covered Wagon” at Community Hall, Oct. 28, 29 and 30.
  • The W.C.T.U. has decided to serve dinner and supper on election day, Nov. 4, in accordance with its custom, but the place where the meals will be served has not yet been determined upon. The ladies met at the home of Mrs. W.B. Sabey Thursday afternoon of last week to hear the report of the president, Mrs. C.D. Hawn, on the state convention at Oneonta. Dainty refreshments were served during the social hour that followed.
  • A son was born last Saturday to Mr. and Mrs. James Westervelt.
  • Mrs. W.B. Sabey has received a card from Mrs. Flora Lussier of Albany, Red Cross nurse, stating that she would like to start a first-aid class in Ravena, and Mrs. Sabey has requested that anyone who is interested in such a class to notify her as soon as possible so that class days may be arranged before Mrs. Lussier’s schedule is filled. Mrs. Lussier is well known in Coeymans, where she gave home nursing lessons three years ago.

  • Eggs are very scarce in this local market and retail at 28c. a dozen, large or small.
  • John A. Brower has purchased the building site on Blaisdell Avenue and will lay the foundation this fall for a commodious and attractive residence.
  • An adjourned meeting of the Coeymans Union Anti-Horse Thief Society will be held at the hotel of R.S. Hotaling, Oct. 19, at 7:30 p.m. sharp.
  • Sutton & Sudderly have two two-story cottages 20×24 under construction on their land in the north part of the village and expect to have a third one completed this fall.
