COEYMANS HOLLOW — With creaks and groans and screams that pierced the night, the community gathered at Joralemon Park on Saturday for the annual Horror in the Hollow Hayride.

The event is now in its ninth year and brings zombies, witches, ghosts and ghouls out of their usual hiding spots for a night of thrills and chills, hosted by the Coeymans Hollow Volunteer Fire Corporation.

The Halloween-themed event has been on and off for the past few years but made its return this weekend.

“This is the ninth year,” said event organizer Jack Dennis. “We had to cancel for two years for COVID and last year we canceled because the trail was flooded, so this is our ninth year. It’s a fundraiser for the firehouse.”

The Horror in the Hollow Hayride, the night’s premier attraction, loaded up multiple wagons pulled by tractors for a spooky ride through the wooded trail of Joralemon Park, while music, vendors, a bounce house and other activities took place throughout the park.

The event has become a local tradition that participants were happy to see return after last year’s cancellation when the park’s trail flooded. The Halloween event was originally launched by the police department but was taken over by the firefighters several years ago.

“It started out as a fundraiser for the police department but then they decided it was too much for them to do, so they gave it to us and we’ve been doing it on our own for the past five years,” Dennis said. “This year we included more fire companies from the area because we all work together for mutual aid and everybody is short (of volunteers), so we all banded together to do it this year.”

The hayride wound through the park’s trail with 20 stations of spooky sights — everything from an electric chair that “zapped” its occupant to witches, horror movie characters like Jason from “Friday the 13th,” bloody killers and murder victims.

One of the highlights of the trip were the zombies that charged the hay wagon with piercing screeches and screams.

The spooky park visitors were all firefighters, with the exception of the zombies, who were played by students from the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk and Coxsackie-Athens high schools’ National Honor Society.

The event began at 5 p.m. and ran until 9:30 p.m., and as the sun set and darkness descended on Joralemon Park and its scary occupants, the level of terror ramped up.

Horror in the Hollow is an annual fundraiser to support the Coeymans Hollow firehouse.
