Family Storytime is a fun, participatory storytime for the whole family that includes songs, fingerplays, stories and movement activities. No registration is required.

  • Gift Wrap-A-Palooza

Thursday, Dec. 12, from 2-3:30 p.m.; 4-5:30 p.m.; and 6-7:30 p.m.

Do you have gifts you don’t want the little ones to see? Maybe you’re hiding something special from a loved one? Wrap your gifts here! The library will provide paper, tape, ribbons, bows and decorations. The library will also have some craft paper gift bags that you can decorate and use. There will be eight people per seating, with three seatings at 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Registration is required at rcscommunitylibrary.org. For adults.

  • HEAP Drop-In Application Assistance

Friday, Dec. 13, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Do you need help heating your home? Come find out if you are eligible for Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) benefits, which can help eligible New Yorkers heat their homes. If you are eligible, you may receive one regular HEAP benefit per program year and could also be eligible for emergency HEAP benefits if you are in danger of running out of fuel or having your utility service shut off. A representative from Cornell Cooperative Extension will be present and will meet with people individually on a first come-first serve basis. Applications will be available if you would like to complete an application on site. Registration is required at rcscommunitylibrary.org.

  • Romp and Read

Romp and Read will help get the wiggles out on Tuesdays and Fridays at 10 a.m. with interactive themes, stories, and action songs with props. No need to register.

  • Chair Yoga

Friday, Dec. 13, from 10:30-11:15 a.m.

Join in at Senior Projects of Ravena for this series of gentle chair yoga classes. For adults ages 50 and over.

  • Sweets with Santa

Saturday, Dec. 14, from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Join Santa at the library for some holiday stories and seasonal cheer. Enjoy a few holiday crafts and a winter science experiment, write a letter to Santa, then pick out a book to take home along with your sweet treat goodie bag. Registration is required at rcscommunitylibrary.org.

  • Friends of the RCS Community Library Monthly Meeting

Monday, Dec. 16, from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

The Friends of the RCS Community Library meets monthly to discuss ways to advocate and support the library and its services. New members are always welcome! Meetings are at the library on the third Monday of the month.

  • Romp and Read

  • Write Together at the Library

The library will offer writing prompts, sprints, and quiet time for you to get ahead on your writing project, no matter where you are in the process.   • Senior Cinema: ‘Last Christmas’

Wednesday, Dec. 18, from 2-5 p.m.

“Last Christmas” is a heartfelt comedy inspired by the unforgettable music of George Michael. Emilia Clarke stars at Kate, who works as an elf at a year-round holiday shop and faces an endless streak of bad luck and poor decision making until she meets Tom (Henry Golding), a kind-hearted man with a mysterious past who challenges her cynical worldview. Dear Rusty:

I plan to retire in 2025 (the year I turn 70). Given that I’m still working, I’m delaying my Social Security until that year.

I noticed on my Social Security statement that my payment in January of 2025 will not be much different than my age 70 amount in October of 2025. If that is truly the case, would it not be better for me to start taking Social Security payments starting in January of 2025? Am I missing anything here?

Dear Uncertain Senior:

Your benefit in October 2025 at age 70 will be about 6% more than it will be in January 2025. If that isn’t shown on your Statement of Estimated Benefits, it may be due to a particular nuance in Social Security’s rules relating to Delayed Retirement Credits (DRCs).

When benefits are claimed mid-year after full retirement age (FRA), the DRCs earned in that year aren’t applied until the following January. Thus, someone who claims benefits to start mid-year will initially get the DRCs they’ve earned through the end of the previous year, but not immediately get credit for the additional DRCs earned during the claim-year. Those extra DRCs earned between January and the month benefits started will be applied the following January. 

By way of example, if someone beyond FRA claims benefits to start in October 2024, their initial SS retirement benefit will be what they were entitled to at the end of 2023 and would not include DRCs earned between January 2024 and September 2024. They will collect that initial January 2024 benefit until January 2025 when the DRCs earned in 2024 are applied, at which point their benefit would increase by 6%.

There is, however, one exception to this rule, which is that all DRCs are immediately credited when benefits are claimed to start in the month age 70 is reached, so despite what your Statement of Estimated Benefits might reflect, if you claim for benefits to start in the month you turn 70 (October 2025) you will get your maximum age 70 benefit immediately and won’t need to wait until January 2026 for those extra DRCs to be applied. 

Unfortunately, Social Security’s benefit estimator doesn’t explain how this nuance works and may show someone claiming mid-year receiving the same benefit as for the preceding January, without further explanation. That is, in my opinion, a flaw in the estimator, which may result in people making a wrong decision on when to claim their Social Security benefit.

Nevertheless, rest assured that your benefit in October 2025 (the month you turn 70) will be your maximum amount — 6% more than it would be if you claimed benefits to start in January 2025, and you won’t need to wait until the following January to get the DRCs earned earlier in 2025.

Police: Rollover crash leads to foot chase, altercation

BETHLEHEM — A rollover crash on Delaware Avenue on Saturday led to a foot chase and altercation, according to Bethlehem Police.

Police responded Saturday to the crash at 12:47 p.m. on Delaware Avenue near Longmeadow Drive in the town of Bethlehem.

Antonio Trivellotto, 24, of Schenectady, was driving westbound on Delaware Avenue at a high rate of speed when he rear ended another vehicle that was stopped at the intersection on Delaware Avenue, Bethlehem Police said in a statement.

“The force of the impact caused the vehicle that was rear ended to get pushed from the roadway into a utility pole and debris from the initial crash struck two other vehicles that were in the intersection,” according to police. “Trivellotto’s vehicle continued westbound, striking a tree and rolling over.”

Police say following the crash Trivellotto left the vehicle and fled the scene on foot. Officers tracked footprints in the snow and found Trivellotto on Canterbury Lane, police said.

“While officers were interviewing Trivellotto about the crash, he did punch one of the officers in the face,” police said.

The officer was not injured.

Trivellotto was taken to Albany Medical Center due to injuries sustained in the crash.

The crash is under investigation and charges are pending, police said.
