RAVENA-COEYMANS-SELKIRK — Local youngsters spent four weeks this summer learning about everything from art to cooking to math.
Approximately 280 students participated in Discovery Camp at the RCS campus this summer. The program opened July 10 and ran through Aug. 3.
The camp gave local students who are entering grades 1 through 8 the chance to do hands-on learning and take field trips outside the classroom, exploring areas of interest they might otherwise not get the chance to experience.
Campers had the opportunity to visit local businesses, explore nature, perform in a play, create art, plan a car show, cook and more, according to the RCS Central School District.
The month of activities also served as an enrichment program, improving students’ math and literacy skills in a fun way.
District Superintendent Dr. Brian Bailey said at the Aug. 2 meeting of the RCS Board of Education that he had visited several of the programs as the camp neared its conclusion, including the kids’ car show, art exhibit and theater performance, and was impressed with what he saw.
“The kids are just so excited about the things that they’ve done this summer and it was really heartwarming to see,” Bailey said. “Education should be like that every day, and there is no reason why it shouldn’t be.”
