COEYMANS HOLLOW — Get ready to bundle up and head to Lawson Lake for a day of winter fun.
The annual Winter Festival, hosted by Albany County, will be at the lake on Saturday, Feb. 22, with festivities running from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
There will be plenty of fun to be had with activities all day long.
With all the snow we’ve been having recently, you can strap on a pair of snowshoes and head out onto the grounds, whether you are an experienced snowshoer or just trying it out for the first time.
Or, you could try ice skating on the lake, or give ice fishing a try. Never went ice fishing before? The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation will offer a free fishing clinic to give pointers on the sport for newcomers. A fishing license is not required to participate in the clinic and there is no charge. Participants will learn how to cast a rod, as well as fish identification, fishing equipment and techniques, fisheries management, angling ethics, aquatic ecology and more.
There will be snow dogs, a bonfire, and an ice rescue demonstration by the Albany County Sheriff’s Office.
There will also be food vendors for a midday snack or meal, and vendors sharing information about their organizations and departments.
“Get ready for a winter wonderland at Albany County’s annual Winter Festival!” Albany County Executive Daniel McCoy said when he announced the event. “Join us for a day filled with snowy adventures, including snowshoeing, ice skating, ice fishing, sled dogs, and an ice rescue demo by the Albany County Sheriff’s Office. Don’t miss the bonfire and S’mores to keep you cozy!”
The participating partners for this year’s festival include the NYS Snowmobile Association, Department of Environmental Conservation, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Frontier Sno-Riders and Albany County Departments for Aging, Children, Youth and Families, Crime Victim and Sexual Violence Center, and the Veterans Service Bureau.
Lawson Lake County Park is located at 293 Lawson Lake Road.
There is free admission to the Winter Festival.
