COEYMANS — A fire destroyed the home of Sergeant Kelly Arnold in the Coeymans Police Department, and now the community is pulling together to support her.

Arnold and her family lost their home on River Road in Selkirk and all their belongings in a massive blaze on Friday.

The couple and their three children were not injured in the fire, but a family pet died in the blaze.

A GoFundMe account was set up by Town Clerk Candace McHugh to support Arnold and her family.

“A well-respected member of our community and her family lost their home tonight in a tragic fire,” McHugh wrote on the GoFundMe page. “Sergeant Kelly Arnold of the Coeymans Police Department is the one who answers your calls every day, all day, and smiles every time. She is the glue of the Coeymans Police Department. Sergeant Arnold, her husband and three young children have suffered not only the tragic loss of their home but also a beloved pet. We ask that you please support Sergeant Kelly Arnold and her family as they try to recover. She is there for our community every day and now we need to be there for her.”

The GoFundMe account reached its initial goal in less than 24 hours, but the effort continues.

“She is a beloved member of our community,” McHugh said of Arnold.

McHugh set an initial goal of raising $20,000 for the Arnold family, and by 5:30 p.m. Saturday, the fundraiser had already generated $24,359.

But the Arnold family sustained a massive loss, and fundraising continues.

The Selkirk Fire Department announced Saturday that the firehouse at 126 Maple Ave. in Selkirk would serve as a collection site for the family to collect new or very gently used clothing, shoes, sneakers, snow boots, pajamas and outerwear for the two adults and three children in the family.

Personal hygiene products like shampoo, conditioner, soap, body wash, combs, brushes, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, hair ties, antibiotic ointment, ibuprofen and other personal care items are also being collected.

Gift cards and monetary donations are also being accepted to stores such as Shop N Save, Market 32, Amazon, Walmart, Target, CVS and local restaurants to help the family.

Items were slated to be collected on Monday, Feb. 17, from 12-6 p.m., and Tuesday, Feb. 18, from 1-8 p.m. More collection dates may be announced on the Selkirk Fire Department’s Facebook page.

The Selkirk Fire Department will also be collecting monetary donations in a fire boot at local sites, or donations can be sent via Venmo directly to Kelly Arnold at @k_arnold91.

The Ravena Fire Department shared the news with the community on Facebook and encouraged anyone who can to provide support to the family.

“As so many in our community can attest, Kelly has become one of the best and brightest in our community,” the department said in a statement. “Our firehouse feels as though she is one of us, and as such, we will do all that we can to support her and her family in their time of need.

“Our disciplines may be different, but the members of our departments and the members of the Town of Coeymans Police Department are cut from the same cloth.”
