RAVENA — The holiday season can be difficult for military members serving overseas, far from family and friends, but a local group is looking to change that.

The Capital Region chapter of the Blue Star Mothers is collecting donations of items that will be packaged up and sent to deployed service men and women. Blue Star Mothers is an organization of women with children serving in the military.

The program is spearheaded in the local community by former village trustee Mary Ellen Rosato.

“The Blue Star Mothers are sending 600 packages overseas to our active military and we are packing them up on Nov. 16,” Rosato said. “The village [of Ravena] posted on their website that they are collecting items to go in the boxes and we are also collecting leftover Halloween candy to throw in the boxes because some people have a lot left and they are not sure what to do with it.”

The organization collects donations and sends out boxes throughout the year, and recently sent 540 packages to individual service members. The current drive is to show the troops there are people at home thinking of them during the holiday season.

“Those boxes really do help someone who is serving overseas that has absolutely nobody,” Rosato said. “There are people that don’t have family or they went into the Army or Navy just to have something, and they don’t have family back home. We coordinate with some of the chaplains to find out who could really use a box, and they help us out with that.”

Packages are sent to troops serving overseas, some of whom are from the local area.

“We want to make sure our local people are taken care of,” Rosato said.

The group is collecting a variety of items to send out, including:

  • Individual and travel size packs of peanut butter/cheese crackers
  • Granola bars
  • Beef jerky
  • Macaroni and cheese microwave cups
  • Cup o’ Noodles
  • Pop Tarts
  • Rice Krispie Treats
  • Small packages of cookies
  • Tuna pouches
  • Gum and hard candy
  • Nuts/sunflower seeds (small packages)
  • Lip balm
  • Individual-size tissues
  • Small packages of wipes
  • Toothbrushes and toothpaste
  • Body wash and deodorant

If you would rather donate money to purchase needed supplies, you can make out a check to “Capital District Blue Star Mothers NY2” and drop it off at the Village Clerk’s Office at 15 Mountain Road. Donation of items can also be dropped off at the clerk’s office.

For troops who don’t have support from back home, a holiday box can mean the difference between a lonely holiday and a brighter day.

“There is no war going on right now — people think it’s peacetime, but we always have people in harm’s way. Every once in a while, you’ll hear about a helicopter that crashed, or there was an explosion — there are still people in harm’s way,” Rosato said. “This is a way of letting them know that people here care about our military over there.”

Oftentimes, the recipients write back to Blue Star Mothers to say how much the gifts mean to them.

“They say they really appreciated the boxes that we sent, and say they thought nobody cared,” she said. “This shows them that we do.”
