In honor of National Purple Heart Day, members of the Albany County Executive’s Office, Albany County Legislature, the Albany County Veterans Service Bureau, and the Albany County Department of Public Works unveiled new signage that indicates Albany County’s designation as a “Purple Heart County.”

Many Albany County residents answered the call, served in the nation’s Armed Forces, and paid the price in defense of the country. By registering with the Military Order of the Purple Heart for this designation, Albany County aims to recognize the selfless service of area veterans and honor the men and women who have been awarded the Purple Heart Medal. These signs will serve as a visual reminder that the community stands with them.

“Honoring Purple Heart veterans is not only our duty but a profound privilege,” Albany County Executive Daniel McCoy said. “These veterans have endured the scars of battle, both seen and unseen, to protect our community. We owe them a debt that can never fully be repaid, and this designation reflects our commitment to ensuring they receive the recognition and support they deserve.”

The county’s designation demonstrates the honor and respect for those who served, county officials said.

“Designating Albany County as a ‘Purple Heart County’ symbolizes our appreciation and respect for the courageous men and women who defend our democracy and our nation,” said Albany County Legislature Chairwoman Joanne Cunningham. “Along with so many of my colleagues in the Legislature, I am proud to have sponsored this resolution and today we see the tangible results – which showcases Albany County’s support for our military veterans who have sacrificed their lives to safeguard our freedom.”

“Last year, I was proud to introduce legislation designating Albany a ‘Purple Heart County,’” said Albany County Legislator Chris Smith. “Today’s announcement is the culmination of those efforts, and we can all be proud that Albany County is recognizing and honoring the brave men and women in uniform who sacrificed life and limb to protect our country. Thank you, County Executive Dan McCoy and all my colleagues in county government, for taking this important step and getting the signage up and ready to welcome residents from all over the Capital Region. As a former member of the military in the United States Army, I know we can never repay our veterans who were wounded or lost their lives in the line of duty – but we can always show them our eternal gratitude.”
