Obituary: Rosemary Flanagan Lightsey

Rosemary Flanagan Lightsey

RAVENA — Rosemary, lovingly known as “Rosie,” was born and grew up in Yonkers, NY.  She attended Roosevelt High School and then SUNY Oswego in Oswego, NY, where she met Preston, her college sweetheart and loving husband for 64 years. They moved to Ravena, NY, where she resided the rest of her life.

After raising four wonderful children, Rosie attended The College of St. Rose in Albany, NY, earning her Master’s degree in Education. She then became a beloved teacher at Pieter B. Coeymans Elementary School and then RCS Middle School. Rosie became very close to many of the teachers and staff, who have remained her lifelong friends.

Rose loved to travel! Her favorite countries were Italy and Ireland, and she and Pres also traveled as far as Africa. Hawaii was also a destination she found amazing and beautiful. Rose and Pres loved boating and spent many summers boating on Lake Champlain and the St. Lawrence Seaway/Thousand Islands. She loved the marinas on Lake Champlain and up and down the Hudson.

In her younger days, Rosie was an avid tennis player. She remained a voracious reader and amazing Scrabble player well into her 70s. She was quite competitive and beating her at Scrabble was nearly impossible. Daily, she could be found reading The Times Union and working on the crossword puzzle and word jumble!

Rosie will be dearly missed and leaves us with many dear memories. She is survived by her husband Preston, her older siblings Peggy and Walter, and her children Kirk, Dan, Mary Jane and Diane, and her eight grandchildren.

A private family service and burial will be held. Services were under the direction of Babcock Funeral Home, Ravena, 518-756-8333.
