Ethel Wilkinson Porteous, 96 a former longtime resident of the Roe Jan area passed away peacefully Saturday, August 21, 2010 at Great Barrington Health & Rehabilitation.

She was born on March 15, 1914 in Copake, the daughter of Charles and Theresa (Ness) Wilkinson.

Educated locally, she then attended the Oneonta State Normal School, where she received her degree in teaching. Prior to the completion of World War II she taught 5th grade in Boston Corners as part of the Roeliff Jansen School District.

Mrs. Porteous was a member of the Copake/Hillsdale United Methodist Churches and most recently of the West Copake Reformed Church.

Mrs. Porteous was pre-deceased by her husband George F. in 1973 and a granddaughter, Kelley A. Hopkins in 1986.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Robert Hopkins of Hillsdale, and a son and daughter-in-law, George and Martha Porteous of Port Orange, Fla. She also leaves a grandson and his wife, Matthew and Jane Hopkins of Columbus, OH, and a great granddaughter, Nora Ann Hopkins.

A graveside service to which family and friends are invited will be held Wednesday August 25, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the North Hillsdale Cemetery.
