Vincent J. Wallace, Jr. (1931 – 2019)
HUDSON—Vincent John Wallace, Jr., age 87, died at his home October 9, 2019.
He was born October 26, 1931 in Hudson, the son of the late Vincent J., Sr., and Elizabeth Hardy Wallace. His younger brother, Reuben George Wallace died earlier.
He was married January 25, 1957 to Patricia Hawver, his wife of 62 years, who survives him as do his children, Vincent G.(Ellen), Michael P., Patricia K. and Timothy P.; grandchildren, Robert and Kayln Rock Benton (Thomas), Mason and Axel Burch, Patrick and Lauren Wallace; his great-grandchildren, Anastasia and Parker; and many paternal and maternal family members.
He attended Hudson and Greenport public schools, graduating in 1949 and completed engineering-related programs at Columbia-Greene Community College, Hudson Valley Community College, the U.S. Army Engineer School, the College of St. Rose and the University of Connecticut. He was first employed by the Columbia County Highway Department Engineering Section and then by the NYS Division of Military and Naval Affairs Facilities Engineering Section, retiring in 1986 after 32 years as a senior architect. Throughout his career he worked part-time as a land surveyor assistant in the field, office and record repositories and then left retirement for part-time employment at Taconic Farms, Germantown.
He enlisted in CO.B 152nd Engineer Battalion, New York Army National Guard at Hudson in February 1949 and served continually in the Guard and Reserves for 43 years, retiring in 1991 as a major, Corps of Engineers. His enlisted and commissioned service includes engineer platoon leader, company executive officer, battalion adjutant, commanding officer, headquarters detachment, New York Army National Guard, aide-de-camp to the vice chief of staff to the Governor, infantry battalion combat aidman and NCO in charge, Latham Medical Dispensary, Camp Smith, Peekskill.
His community service as a volunteer included membership in Greenport Pumper Co. No. 1, (capt), Lafayette Chemical Co. Valatie, A.B. Shaw Fire Co. Claverack, Greenport Rescue Squad, Valatie Volunteer Rescue Squad, (life member) Southern Columbia County Ambulance Squad, serving continually for 36 years. He was certified as an American National Red Cross First Aid instructor and instructor trainer for first aid and CPR programs, instructor and instructor trainer for the American Heart Assn. CPR courses, certified NYS Health Department instructor for emergency medical technician courses and served as president of the Columbia County Volunteer Ambulance Assn, and chairman of the Columbia County Emergency Medical Services Committee.
He initiating action to preserve the West Gatehouse of the former Columbia Turnpike in Greenport, restoration and continued maintenance of the Grand Army of the Republic (Civil War) plot in the Hudson City Cemetery, initiating a program to identify the graves of 38 Revolutionary War veterans in the Hudson Cemetery and install bronze grave markers in conjunction with the Daughters and Sons of the American Revolution Chapters., prepared a listing of the names and locations of Civil War Veterans grave sites in both Hudson cemeteries, worked part-time for two years with the curator of the Fireman’s Home Museum to restore the 1800s Hayes aerial ladder truck to award-winning condition. He was a member of the Palatines to America, Columbia County Historical Society, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War Post #154 of Albany and the Clan Wallace Society (life member).
His interest in flying saw training as a student pilot: in fixed wing aircraft (J3 Cub)(interrupted by the Korean War), training in sky diving, and certification as a private pilot (and owner) of a hot air balloon.
He held membership in the Catskill Yacht Club (commodore and life member), Hudson-Mohawk Council of Yacht Clubs, Hudson Valley Yacht Club, Peekskill, Roe-Jan Creek Boat. Club, Hudson Valley Old-Time Power Assn, (life member), Aircraft Owners and Pilots Assn., Balloon Federation of America, National Rifle Assn., New York State Rifle and Pistol Assn., Columbia – Greene Sportsman Assn., Reserve Officers Assn., National Guard Assn, American Artillery Assn., 1st Litchfield, CT, Artillery Regt., 5th New York independent Battery, HCSD Concerned Taxpayers. He was an outspoken Tea Party patriot.
He received religious instruction at St. Mary’s Academy and worshiped at St. Mary’s Church, All Saints Chapel (Episcopal) and Christ Church Episcopal (serving as a lector).
A funeral mass was held October 14, 2019 from Christ Church Episcopal, 431 Union Street. Arrangements were with the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, 110 Green Street, Hudson. In lieu of flowers donations in Mr. Wallace’s name may be made to the Columbia-Greene Humane Society.
Bernard Jutkofsky (1933 – 2019)
CLAVERACK—Bernard Jutkofsky, 86, born July 23, 1933 to Helen and Joseph Jutkofsky, died October 10, 2019. He was a resident of Claverack.
He was a graduate of Martin Van Buren High School in Kinderhook.
A veteran of the Korean war, PVT2, he served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1954. When he reflected on his time of service, he conveyed a sense of appreciation for having the opportunity to serve.
While his chosen vocation farming, he would likely be viewed as a conservationist, doing everything within his powers to preserve the land for which he cared. He also worked for A. Colarusso & Son’s Sand and Gravel for many years as an independent contractor.
He is survived by: his life partner of 44 years, Betsy Curtis; his son, Jay (Jenna) and his grandson Viktor, all of Philadelphia, PA; Ida Jutkofsky, mother of Jay; his brother, Paul of Florida; Betsy’s daughter, Jen Jones (Ryan) and their daughter, Rylee June of Florida; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister, Olga and brother, Joseph, Jr.
He was an extraordinarily kind, loving, considerate and devoted father, father-in-law, grandfather and partner.
In lieu of flowers consider donations to the A.B. Shaw Fire Co., Claverack and the Greenport Rescue Squad.
Services were held October 14 at Bates & Anderson -Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, 110 Green Street, Hudson followed by a service officiated by Father John of the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Church of Hudson. Interment followed in Cedar Park Cemetery.
George A. Gordon (1943 – 2019)
HUDSON—George Alton Gordon of Hudson passed away peacefully October 10, 2019. He was born October 25, 1943 to loving parents Hyma and Jane Gordon.
He worked for many years at the Pocket Book Factory and retired from L&B in Hudson. He was an avid collector of rare books and coins, and was well-known for his knowledge of history, especially the United States Presidents. His favorites were: Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy and Theodore Roosevelt. Mr. Gordon had a great sense of humor and was willing to talk to anyone who would listen about politics, history, historical or current events. He was affectionately known as “U.G.” to family and friends.
He is survived by: his sister, Nancy Weaver; nephew, Russell (Judy) Webb of Massachusetts; niece, Lisa (Joseph) Nero of Claverack; nephew, Kevin Gordon, of Washington; nephew, Chad (Katrina) Gordon of Washington; niece, Alicia (Honorio) Sanchez of California, and niece, Darcy Lemus of Washington. In addition to several great-nieces and -nephews. He is survived by his dear friends, Donny and Karen Buffa.
He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, John P. Gordon.
A funeral service was held October 15 at Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, 110 Green Street, Hudson. Interment followed in Cedar Park Cemetery.
Richard Boswell (1924 – 2019)
HUDSON—Richard Boswell, 94, of Hudson, died Friday, October 11, 2019. Born November 30, 1924 in Manhattan, he was the son of the late Henry Boswell and Agnes (Dougherty) Boswell.
He served in World War II under General George S. Patton in the 47th Armored Infantry Battalion, 5th Armored Division, 3rd U.S. Army. He was wounded in the Battle of the Huertgen Forest November 19, 1944 and was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, and many other medals for his service. Mr. Boswell grew massive vegetable gardens every summer and took great pride in providing his family and neighbors with tomatoes and a variety of vegetables. He was the happiest when he was on his tractor brush hogging or plowing up a field. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and an avid Farmall tractor enthusiast. He was even featured in an issue of “Red Power” magazine along with an article about his life with photos of himself and his tractor collection. He became a first-time grandfather at the age of 80. His granddaughter, Molly, was the light of his life. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Vera (Barton) Boswell; his daughter, Jill Delaney, her husband, Joseph, and his granddaughter, Molly Delaney. He is also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his brother, Henry “Buddy” Boswell and his sister, Elaine Hayes. His family thanks the wonderful staff and residents of Whittier Nursing Home who were so kind and gave him such wonderful care. Mrs. Boswell’s life was so much more than what can be summed up in a few paragraphs. “He will forever be in our hearts.”
Funeral services will be held Friday, October 18, 1 p.m. from Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, 110 Green Street, Hudson. Burial will follow in the Churchtown Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 11:30 a.m. from the funeral home. Donations may be made to Disabled American Veterans.
Janina Strycharczyk (1929 – 2019)
HUDSON—Janina Strycharczyk, 90, of Hudson passed away Sunday, October 13, 2019.
Born January 22, 1929 in Poland, she was the daughter of John and Maria (Soltys) Kopec.
Mrs. Strycharczyk is survived by: her daughter, Bogustawa (Bogie) Snyder; brother, John “Yash” (Yolanta) Kopec; sisters, Julia (Adam) Cieplia, Jozie Krebs, Michalina Ziora and Helen Okolski; sister-in-law, Janina Kopec; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Feliks Strycharczyk, and two brothers, Marcin and Joseph Kopec.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, October 17, 10 a.m. from St. Nicholas Ukranian Catholic Church. Visitation hours at the Bates & Anderson-Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home are Wednesday, October 16 from 4 to 6 p.m. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Poughkeepsie.
Denise M. Tompkins (1953 – 2019)
ELIZAVILLE—Denise M. Tompkins, 65, of Elizaville passed away unexpectedly at home October 11, 2019.
She was born November 6, 1953 to her loving parents Vincent and Rose Marie Sacerdote.
She leaves behind: her loving husband, William; son, Kyran Tompkins and fiancée Allysa Guzman; daughter, Ondine Niles and son-in-law Jonathan Niles; her brother, Vincent; her sisters, Barbara, Lynne; many nieces, nephews and other family members; many friends, including close friend, Heather Martin.
Mrs. Tompkins was an excellent cook and spoiled her family, who could not go to a restaurant without comparing. Italian restaurants were out of the question as it would be a disappointment. She loved her cats, as they were part of her family.
The memorial will be held at Burnett & White Funeral Home, 7461 South Broadway, Red Hook, Friday, October 18, 2019 from 4 to 7 p.m. After services, family and close friends are invited to join for dinner together.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to an SPCA of choice in Mrs. Tompkins’ honor.
