Penny D. Tudor
COLCHESTER, VT—Loving wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend, Penny Dodds Tudor, 55, of South Burlington, VT, passed away peacefully July 2, 2022 at the McClure Miller Respite House.
Born in Great Barrington, MA, she grew up on a dairy farm in Hillsdale. She graduated from the University of Vermont and began her career in food science at Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream. She worked in quality control and into a management position where she was lovingly known as the “Velvet Hammer” for having a firm but compassionate management style. After 18 years of service and the Unilever buyout of Ben and Jerry’s, she decided a change was needed and began working at Seventh Generation, Inc., where she rose to the position of director of quality and product compliance, successfully managing her department and several employees. She worked there for 21 years as a well-liked, accomplished, and award-winning manager until she was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive brain cancer in September 2021.
She is survived by her husband of 30+ years, Chris and her two daughters, Becca and Maggie as well as her loyal running pal, Buddy. She is also survived by her mother, Ruth Dodds; her brother and sister-in-law, John and Marian Dodds; her mother-in-law, Janet Tudor, and her nieces, Louisa and Nancy Dodds. She will always be known for her love of family, being a fantastic mother, a thoughtful coworker, and a giving volunteer. “We will miss her smile, her laugh, and her joy around the campfire. Most of all, we will miss her loving and caring attitude towards others. She always set an excellent example as a person with great moral conviction.”
A memorial service will be held at Essex Alliance Church in Essex, VT, at 2 p.m., Thursday, July 14, 2022 with a reception to follow. Her ashes will be spread at one of her favorite national parks at a later date. Her urn will be interred at the family grave site in Hillsdale.

Shirley A. Oliver (1948 – 2022)
HUDSON—Shirley A. Oliver, 73, of Hudson died suddenly at Columbia Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family, July 4, 2022.
She was born in Manhattan, December 17, 1948, the daughter of James Wade Ward and Audrey Bowles. After high school she worked as an office manager for Readers Digest in Manhattan.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be missed by the family including: her significant other, Lawrence Bohanan; her living children, Harry Bowles, Al Crumedy, Tujuna Crumedy, Jamel Crumedy and Cecemia Oliver and a brother, Michal Young. She was predeceased by her daughter, Charlene Jackson and son, Louis Oliver, III. She has many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Barbara Card (1939 – 2022)
PHILMONT—Barbara Card, 83, passed away peacefully July 3, 2022 at Pine Haven Nursing Home.
She was born in Hudson, March 5, 1939. She was the daughter of the late Milford and Maccina (Kronas) Dunspaugh.
She graduated from Hudson High School in 1956 and attended Mildred Elley Secretarial School. She worked at Richmor Aviation in Ghent for more than 40 years.
She had a passion for casinos, shopping, fundraising dinners, dancing and traveling, especially to Las Vegas. In her later years, she enjoyed casino trips closer to home. She also loved animals and happily jumped in the backseat of her niece Karen’s car to share the seat with Jimbo and go for a ride. She and her sister, Ellie wore out the soles of many shoes walking around the building at Joslen Commons and then Ghent Adult Living.
Ms. Card is survived by: her sister, Eleanor Close and her daughter, Judy (Jake) Tice. “Airplane Grandma” will be missed by grandchildren Jackie (Dan) Sweet and John “Bud” Tice, as well as great-grandchildren, Ella and Bentley Sweet and special friends, Steven and Olgita Kuzmiak. She was predeceased by her companion and dancing partner of more than 30 years, Steve Kuzmiak in 2014. She and Steve were especially fond of polkas.
The family thanks the staff of the South Wing at Pine Haven; the girls at the reception desk and the entire staff at Ghent Adult Living. “All of you, no matter your job, had a part in the wonderful care she received over the last few years. You also provided us with comfort and guidance when we needed it most and we are grateful for all of you.”

Robert C. Austen
ALBANY—Robert “Bob” Campbell Austen, 68, died in his home in early June, 2022. He was the son of the late Richard and Virginia Austen and the longtime beloved partner of the late Robert Meader, former curator of the Shaker Museum in Old Chatham.
He is survived by: his sister, Diane Austen of Canaan and several second cousins in Virginia and New Jersey. He grew up in Canaan. He was a graduate of Chatham High School and attended Columbia-Greene Community College and the Albany Stratton Business School. He lived in Albany the last three difficult years of his life. Prior to that, he resided in Pittsfield, MA, for many years.
With a strong entrepreneurial spirit, he had several businesses over his lifetime including an antique store in West Stockbridge, MA, and a furniture refinishing and chair-caning business, specializing in Shaker taping of chairs, which he maintained for most of his life. He had also been a manager of a Trade Exchange, and in later years worked for O’Connell’s Convenience Plus in Stockbridge. He liked to bake, study the Bible and spend time with family, friends and each of his cats—Boots, Horses (a/k/a Mac), and Kooda. As a youth, in addition to learning about antiques, he skied, bowled and was an avid bicyclist.
Mr. Austen was a gentle, sweet, resourceful man who enjoyed helping others and making them laugh. He was particularly dedicated to supporting those who were struggling emotionally or materially. He was trained as a peer counselor and advocate for the mentally ill through the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Berkshire County, and served for a time on their Board of Directors. He belonged to the Berkshire Dream Center Church where he received guidance from the pastor and assisted with its endeavors. With a passion to make life easier for those in need, he developed several grants as well as a directory of Pittsfield’s food pantries and soup kitchens. As treasurer for the Pittsfield Manos Unidas, an organization which assists immigrants, he was instrumental in obtaining their federal non-profit status. Both the Pittsfield Retired Senior Volunteer Program and the Canaan Grange also benefited from his sustained involvement.
Being warm, outgoing, funny, generous, forgiving, and remarkably resilient, he endeared himself to many. He will certainly be missed.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate Mr. Austen’s life, Tuesday, July 19, 2022, 2 p.m. at the Richmond Congregational Church, 1515 State Road (Route 41), Richmond, MA, followed by light refreshments. The wearing of CDC approved masks is required during the service, except while presenting. Darren Fuller (1972 – 2022)
CLAREMONT, FL—Darren Fuller, 49, of Claremont, Florida, passed away peacefully, June 2, 2022 with his family by his side. He was born November 28, 1972 in Potsdam to Rodney Fuller and Eileen Slater.
He enjoyed the beach, riding his jet ski and playing with his dogs. He also enjoyed playing soccer and football.
Mr. Fuller is survived by: his son, Carson Cocks: his sisters, Heather Locust and Theresa Decormier; his parents; his stepfather, Harland Slater; stepsisters, Maggie Bentley, Becky Garcia and Holly Hedgepath; uncles, Fred (Corky) and Lawrence Varney; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by: his great-grandparents, Ernest and Mabel Morey; grandmother, Mildred Smith; uncles, Charles and James Varney, and his aunt, Maryanne Fuller.

Lyle W. Schermerhorn, Sr. (1937 – 2022)
HUDSON—Lyle W. Schermerhorn, Sr., 85, of Valatie, passed away Monday, July 11, 2022 at Columbia Memorial Hospital.
Born January 24, 1937 in Stottville, he was the son the late Lyle and Edna (Gardinier) Schermerhorn and the husband of the late Mabel Mae (Hamm) Schermerhorn.
He is survived by: his four children, Lyle W. Schermerhorn, Jr., Matthew S. and his wife Melissa Schermerhorn, Wendy Schermerhorn and Bec Gilroy Collins; his grandchildren, Joshua, Jonathan, Jacob Schermerhorn and Bryan Smith; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by one sister, the late Charlene Kerr.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday, July 19 at noon in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Valatie. Calling hours will be from 10 a.m. to noon at the Raymond E. Edward G. Bemiss, Sr. (1945 – 2022)
CHATHAM—Edward G. Bemiss, Sr., “Napa,” 76, of Chatham passed away July 10, 2022.
He was born August 19, 1945 to Lewis A. Bemiss and Gladys V. (Lamoree) Bemiss.
“Ed” graduated from Chatham High School in 1963 and served in the United States Navy from 1965 to 1970.
He worked as a supervisor at Red Star Express for 29 years and later at FedEx for 6 years before retiring. In his retirement he enjoyed playing golf, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren. He was also known for his love of baseball. He had the pleasure of coaching many Chatham youth, as well as, his two sons.
He leaves behind: his son, Michael Bemiss (Erica) of New Jersey, his son, Edward Bemiss, Jr., (Amy) of Chatham; three grandchildren, Julian, Michael and Christopher; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by: his wife of 30 years, Donna; his brother, Lewis and his sister, Marge.

John M. Gaschel (1940 – 2022)
LIVINGSTON—John M. Gaschel passed away Friday, July 1 in Livingston. Born in Hudson, December 31, 1940, he was 81.
Before his retirement he was an employee of the Carpenters Union, Conrail as a welder and then was self-employed.
He will be remembered by all who loved him. He is survived by: his son, John T. Gaschel (Heidi); his grandchildren, Emily Gaschel (Zack), Lindsay Gaschel, Christopher Hapeman, Shelly (Hapeman) Richardson and Aaron Hapeman (Jasmine); six great-grandchildren; his sister, Nancy Gardner of Massachusetts; many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by: his parents, John F. and Nellie; his daughter, Mary Jill Hapeman; sisters, Phyllis Broast and Claire Griffin; brothers, Michael, Joseph and Richard “Yubby” Gaschel.
“Johnny” loved hunting, fishing and his beloved animals.

C. Michael Bufi (1934 – 2022)
GERMANTOWN—C. Michael Bufi, 88, of Germantown passed away July 4, 2022 in the comfort of his home. Born February 4, 1934 in Cliffside, New Jersey, he was the son of Michael and Vera (Russo) Bufi.
Mr. Bufi is survived by: his wife Frances (Farco) Bufi; sons, Michael (Susan), Anthony (Grace) and Corey (Laura) Bufi; grandchildren, Kyra (Caleb) Bufi-Burke and Nicholas Bufi; sister, Mary Whitacre and several nieces and nephews. A celebration of his life will be announced in the fall. Arrangements are with the Bates and Anderson Funeral Home, Hudson.
William G. Teator, Sr. (1958 -2022)
HUDSON—William Gary Teator, Sr., age 64, gained his wings July 2, 2022 with his wife by his side at Columbia Memorial Hospital.
“Bill” was born January 28, 1958 in Hudson to his late parents, Ruth Teator and Jesse Hoffman. He worked for the City of Hudson for more than 10 years. He was a hard worker and an incredible father always taking care of his family. He was a great cook and good with his hands. He was the glue to the family.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Jesse Brown.
Mr. Teator is survived by: his wife, Ann Kenneally; brother, Phil Brown (Linda); sister, Jessica Hoffman; children, William Teator, Jr., Brian Teator, Tiffany Keener (Justin), Bryan Fuller, and Alisha DeGeyter (Matthew) along with many grandchildren.

Eileen P. Cassidy (1943 – 2022)
CLERMONT—Eileen P. Cassidy, 78, of Clermont passed away Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at her home.
Born November 26, 1943 in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Connie Johnson.
She married Edward “Mike” Cassidy, October 30, 1971 in Queens. After getting married, they relocated to Maryland, where they spent many years. They ultimately settled in Clermont in 2008 and were able to live a comfortable, happy life here surrounded by kindness and love.
While in Brooklyn, Mmrs. Cassidy devoted her life to being an ER nurse at Bellevue Hospital in NYC. She continued her care for others in different aspects of her life. She was a kind, loving and generous soul to all who knew her.
She was a devoted Catholic and a longtime parishioner at St. Christopher’s Church in Red Hook and of St. Pius V in Maryland. At both churches, she was the head of their RCIA programs.
In addition to her loving husband and best friend, Mike Cassidy, she leaves behind many close friends including, Virginia and Charles Robinson and Jeff and Brook Caldwell.
Her sister, Karin and her niece with whom she was very close with, Kara Michelle predeceased her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, July 14, 10 a.m. at St. Christopher’s Church.
Interment will be private.
