Joyce M. Teator (1938 – 2020)
HUDSON—Joyce Marie Teator of Hudson passed away peacefully January 17, 2020 at Columbia Memorial Hospital, where she volunteered as a member of the hospital’s Ladies Auxiliary.
She was born November 17, 1938 in Catskill, to Raymond C. and Ruth H. Brooks (Schoonmaker). The family made a home in Athens, where they operated a fruit farm on Schoharie Turnpike.
She graduated from Coxsackie-Athens High School in 1955. She went to work for New York State in downtown Albany and began a career in public service. In 1958, she married David Teator of Hudson. Soon after, they welcomed their two sons into the world, David A. Jr., (Ruth) and Jeffrey A. Teator (Susan), who both survive her.
In 1964, Mrs. Teator began her dream job at Hudson High School, first as a stenographer and later as the secretary to the principal. She retired from Hudson High in 1998. She found great joy in working with the staff and students at the school during her many years there.
After retirement, Mrs. Teator stayed busy caring for her five grandchildren, volunteering at St. John’s Emmanuel Lutheran Church, as well as with the Columbia Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. In 2005 her husband, David passed away. They enjoyed 47 years of marriage. In recent years she became involved with social groups such as the Red Hatters of Hudson and the support group known to many as the Sassy Lassies.
She was afforded the privilege of being “Nanny” to six great grandchildren, who also survive her. In addition, she is survived by: her sister. Karen L. Templeton (Dennis) of Catskill; brothers, Ray Brooks (Rose) of Athens, George Brooks of Clifton Park and Walter Brooks (Kathryn) of Kinderhook; her grandchildren, Douglas Teator (Carina) of Troy, Nicholas Teator and Zachary Teator (Lydia), both of Gilbertsville, PA, Stephanie Gaylord (Aaron) of Spencertown, and David Teator, III, (Ashley) of Castleton.
She was predeceased by: a sister, Joanne Bullis along with her parents. Her many nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors, also mourn her passing.
Join her family in celebrating her life Thursday, January 23 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Bates & Anderson- Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, 110 Green Street, Hudson. A Mass will be celebrated Friday, January 24, 10 a.m. from St. John’s Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Sixth Street, Hudson. Mrs. Teator’s cremated remains will be interred at Mellenville Union Cemetery immediately following her service. John R. Kowal (1924 – 2020)
HUDSON—John R. Kowal, 95, of Hudson passed away Monday, January 20 at the Volunteer Firemen’s Home.
Born August 28, 1924 in Linlithgo, he was the son of John and Mary (Baretsky) Kowal.
He was educated in Linlithgo and Germantown schools. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, and was honorably discharged in 1946.
Mr. Kowal was a former EMT instructor, and was a life member and captain of the Greenport Rescue Squad. His community service also included life memberships in the Hudson Elks Lodge #787 and Greenport Pumper Company #1. He was also a member of the National Ski Patrol, and volunteered his service for more than 32 years at Catamount Ski Resort.
Left to cherish Mr. Kowal’s memory are: his three sons, John (Judy), William (Laurie) and Tracy (Carin); three grandchildren, Devin, Paige and Matthew; many cousins and dear friends. He was predeceased by: his wife, Doris (Shook); son, James and sister, Katherine.
Visitation hours at the Bates & Anderson- Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, 110 Green Street, Hudson, are Thursday, January 23 from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral services are Friday, January 24, 1 p.m. from the funeral home.
