Gayle E. Shaffer (1943 – 2019)
VALATIE—Gayle E. Shaffer, 75, from Valatie left this world January 28, 2019 after a long illness.
The former Gayle E. Borden was born June 4, 1943 to Louise Lindinger Borden and Gerald A. Borden of Flushing.
A graduate of Baldwin High School in 1961, she worked for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in New York City. She met, fell in love and married George F. Shaffer December 29, 1962 in Aschaffenburg, Germany where he was stationed and they lived while he was in the U.S. Army.
They returned to Baldwin to begin a family in 1963. She lived in Mahopac and LaGrangeville, until retiring to Valatie.
Mrs. Shaffer owned and operated a home-based ceramics studio where she loved to teach her craft and won many awards for her artwork. She was also involved in home crafting and organized a variety of events throughout the years.
Mr. and Mrs. Shaffer loved to travel, especially by cruise ship. They had many fun trips around the world including to Bermuda, the Panama Canal, Bahamas, Montreal and Ireland as well.
Her main focus and joy in life was raising her three daughters and taking care of her growing family. Mrs. Shaffer enjoyed social activities with many friends as well. She was a member of her local senior organization and enjoyed it’s activities. She was a member or the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Stuyvesant.
She will be missed dearly by all who knew her.
Mrs. Shaffer is survived by: her husband, George; sister, Louise Cardoza of Broad Channel; three daughters, Christine Futyma of Poughkeepsie, Cynthia Mulvaney of Rio Rancho, NM, Courtney Wood of Valatie; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Calling hours will be held Monday, February 4, 10 a.m. to noon at the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, 1015 Kinderhook Street (Route 9), Valatie, with the Reverend Dan Cohn officiating at noon. Burial will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Valatie. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association, American Heart Association or St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Mary T. Considine (1928 – 2019)
CRARYVILLE—Mary T. Considine of Craryville passed peacefully in her own home with family at her side, Sunday, January 27, 2019. She was 90 years old.
She was predeceased by her parents, Mary and Michael; her sister, Winifred (Ryan); brother, Stephen; brother-in-law, James Ryan and sister-in-law, Noreen (Owens).
She is survived by: her brother, James of Woodlawn in the Bronx; her sister-in-law, Janice of Delaware, by her nieces and nephews, Mary Francis Ryan Howley, her husband David and their daughter Caitlin of New Jersey; Michael Ryan, his wife Theresa and their children Michael, Christopher and Heather of New Jersey; Sean Ryan, his wife Lisa and their children Patrick and Joshua of Virginia; William (Bill) Considine; Stephen Considine, Jr., his wife Maureen and their children Nicholas and Paige; Michael Considine, his wife Maureen and their children Kevin, Colleen, Matthew, Catherine and Elizabeth of Connecticut; Kathryn McGowan, her husband John and their children James, Maeve and Caelyn of New York; Maureen Considine and John Kelly of Massachusetts; James Considine and his wife Lisa of California; and her beloved dog, Thunder of Craryville.
Born September 11, 1928 to Mary and Michael Considine, she was the first of four children. She was raised in the Bronx with her siblings, Winifred, Jimmy and Stephen. She attended Holy Rosary, taught by the Sisters of the Presentation of St. Joseph, with whom she maintained a lifelong connection.
Ms. Considine later attended high school and Church at St. Barnabas in the Woodlawn section of the Bronx, and worked for New York Telephone and Telegraph (“Ma Bell”).
She moved full-time to her home in Craryville in 1979, and became increasingly involved in her church, St. Bridget /Our Lady of Hope, over the years becoming a catechist, a Daughter of St. Bridget, a member of the Knitting Club, and working on the Peace Garden, to name just a few of her ventures. Ms. Considine became a home health aide for St. Peter’s through Catholic Charities, and cared for many in her community. She will be greatly missed.
Friends may call at the Peck and Peck Funeral Home, 8063 Route 22, Copake, Friday, February 1 from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, February 2 from 9 to 10 a.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from Our Lady of Home Parish in Copake Falls, Saturday, February 3 at 10:30 a.m.
