Rosemary Palmquist (1946 – 2022)
KINDERHOOK–Rosemary Sandra (Bauer) Palmquist, of Kinderhook, NY, died August 16, 2022, at Albany Medical Center, after multiple hospitalizations, with her family by her side.
Rosemary was born March 1, 1946, in Batavia, NY, the daughter of the late Rev. Alfred Bowen Bauer and the late Harriette Julia (Taylor). She grew up in East Pembroke, Weedsport and Watertown, NY, and Springfield, OH, with her sister Marilyn who remained in a close, loving and supportive relationship with Rosemary throughout her life.
She attended high school in Springfield, and graduated in 1964 from the Northfield School for Girls, East Northfield, MA. She attended the College of Wooster, OH, majoring in English and art, graduating in 1968.
In 1973 she earned a master’s degree in library science from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, where she met her future husband, David William Palmquist. They were married at First Presbyterian Church, Fairfield, CT, July 6, 1974.
The couple settled in Bridgeport, CT, and raised three children. Rosemary worked as media librarian in Bridgeport Public Library, as Town Librarian in Monroe, CT, as Director of the Mark Twain Library, Redding, CT, and as library-media specialist atRoosevelt Elementary School, Bridgeport.
In 1990, the family relocated to Kinderhook, NY, and she worked as library-media specialist in Watervliet City School District, retiring in 2011.
Rosemary was Kinderhook Tri-Village Rotary Club secretary, a Paul Harris Fellow, and chaired the New to You Shop, Christ Church Episcopal, Hudson, NY.
Rosemary was an avid gardener, artist, quilter, lover of nature, and most recently an amateur genealogist and sleuth. She will be remembered for her quirky sense of humor, her depiction of Mrs. Claus with her sister’s Westie, Seamus, her love of family and her compassion towards others. Besides her husband, she is survived by her sister Marilyn (Bauer) Huffman of Valatie, NY, her children, Robert Alfred Hicks, married to Mary Lou, of Mars Hill, NC, Rebecca Taylor (Palmquist) Ekstrom, married to Bryan, of West Sand Lake, NY, and William David Johansson Palmquist of Mars Hills, NC. She leaves granddaughter Julia Ann Hicks, married to Jackie (Lamonds), of Weaverville, NC, and cousins in Wasilla, AK, Nunda, NY, Hanover, PA, and Western NY.
The family plans a memorial service Saturday October 8, at Christ Church Episcopal, 431 Union Street, Hudson, NY, at 11 am, with a reception Friday evening, October 7, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church’s McNary Center, 6 Silvester Street, Kinderhook, NY, from 4 to 7 pm. Interment will be private at St. Paul’s columbarium.

Peter W. Novack (1923 – 2022)
Peter W. Novack, 99, of Hudson/Greenport, passed away at his home Wednesday July 27, 2022, surrounded by his loving family.
Born January 28, 1923 to Walter and Anna (Organek) Nowak of Hudson, he was the second youngest of 11 siblings.
Peter is survived by his 3 loving children, Franni (Ernie) Southern of Sebastian, FL, Anthony of Hudson, Kathi (Stephen) Mims of Scottsdale, AZ, grandchildren Blaze Howe, Brie and Drew Novack, and Sarah and Patrick Mims, great grandchildren Jasper Howe and Kiley Grimm, and great great grandchildren Charlotte and Aubrielle Grimm. He is also survived by sisters Helen (Gordon) Simner of Ocala, FL and Amelia (Michael) Maruniak of Hudson, numerous nieces and nephews and his longtime friend and companion Madee Wagner.
Peter was predeceased by his wife of 51 years Madge “Babs” (Elsom), brothers Alexander (Rose), Patrick (Helen), John (Bette), Walter (Sylvia), and Frank (Mary), sisters Mary (William) Para, Sophie (George) McCafferty, and Rita (Pickens) Stewart.
When Peter wasn’t fishing or sharing his knowledge of the sport with younger generations, you could find him at any number of bowling alleys, horseshoe pits or his beloved VFW Post playing bar dice. He was always up for a good party or a good cigar, and always had some big band music playing, amassing a collection of well over 5000 records, R2R tapes and cd’s. As a teenager, he
was a founding member of the Flying Dutchmen, a 22-member community service and fellowship club. Due to the outbreak of WWII and member enlistments, the FDC became inactive. Following the War, members once again took up their original mission.Thomas Quigley is now the only surviving member.
In January 1943, Peter enlisted in the service, and was assigned to the 8 th Air Force 20 th Fighter Group 2041 st Engineer Fire Fighting Platoon. He was stationed at King’s Cliffe Airbase in England as a member of the Emergency Crash Crew. In 1944, Peter’s Platoon received the Soldier’s Medal of Valor- the highest non-combatant honor-for their quick and heroic action when a P-38 Fighter crashed into an 8-acre incendiary bomb dump. Their bravery in saving the pilot’s life and extinguishing the burning plane saved not only the airfield but the adjoining town as well.
Peter received his Honorable Discharge in January 1946.
Upon his return home, he became a proud member of Stuyvesant Falls Post 9593. Madge soon arrived from England, they married and settled down to raise a family. He resumed his position as a friction mixer at Universal Match Corp, a job he held for 44 years.
At the same time Peter was the owner/operator of Pete’s Pops Ice Cream delivering ice cream treats to children of all ages throughout Hudson and mid-Columbia County. Throughout the area, Peter was always known for his brilliant smile, his kindness, generosity and his willingness to help those in need.
Interment with military honors is scheduled for Cedar Park Cemetery on September 17, 2022 at 11:00am. A celebration of life will follow at the Stuyvesant Falls VFW, County Rte. 25. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Columbia/Greene Counties. PAID OBITUARY
John R. Koepp (1941 – 2022)
LEBANON SPRINGS—John Richard Koepp, 80, died peacefully at his home on Koepp Lane with his devoted wife, Terrianne, by his side, Tuesday, August 30, 2022.
He was born in Pittsfield, MA, September 7, 1941, the son of the late C. Edward and Lucretia Roberts Koepp.
He was a lifelong resident of Lebanon Springs and was a graduate of New Lebanon Central School, class of 1960. He later attended SUNY Cobleskill for one year.
He was a U.S. Navy Disabled American Veteran of the Vietnam War serving as an E-5 electrician from 1961 to 1965.
He was employed by Western Electric in Schenectady, General Electric in Pittsfield and by Gideon Equipment in West Lebanon as a mechanic from 1980 to 2000 before retiring.
Mr. Koepp also served as the superintendent of the Cemetery of the Evergreens in New Lebanon for 20 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lebanon Springs where he served as a deacon, trustee, DVBS director and teacher, Sunday school teacher and church bus driver.
He was a huge railroad buff and for his 25th and 35th wedding anniversaries, he and his wife took train trips across the U.S.A. and Canada.
He was the beloved husband for over 54 years of Terrianne Lawlor Koepp; brother of Barbara (Cliff) Liese of Novi, MI, and Robert E. Koepp of New Lebanon; uncle of Dean and Brian Koepp and Matthew Fahrenkrug.
He also was the surrogate father and grandfather to many local children who came through the Rainbows End Day Care center that he and his wife ran for 33 years in Lebanon Springs.
A funeral service was held September 3 at the First Baptist Church of Lebanon Springs, 31 Main Street, Lebanon Springs with Pastors Larry Markowski, Chuck Mosher and Trygve Tomlinson officiating. Following the service, relatives and friends gathered around Mr. Koepp’s refurbished flag pole at his home for military honors in memory of his service to this country during the Vietnam War.

Kevin J. McHugh (1938 – 2022)
CANYON LAKE, TX—Kevin John McHugh, a beloved husband; father, grandfather and great-grandfather to many, passed away at his home, August 17, 2022 at the age of 84.
He was a revered storyteller, a sincere son of God, and he will be missed by his family and friends.
Born in Fall River, MA, he resided in Ancram, but Texas was always his chosen home.
A graduate of the New York Academy and the University of Houston, he proudly served his county in the United States Air Force. Saint Francis by the Lake, Episcopal Church, was his church home where he found love and solace. His many philanthropic endeavors included being member of the Canyon Lake Lions and Canyon Lake Masonic Lodge 1425.
His work with Xerox, Shell and Brown and Root gave him pride and the knowledge of sales and hard work.
He and his wife spent 45 years as best friends, including a marriage of 28 years.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, John F. McHugh and Angela B. Giblin and his son, Sean P. McHugh. He is survived by: his wife, Valeska Stempelmann Keller; his son, Tommie R. Keller (Melissa); his daughter Kim K. Hannigan (Vince); his son, Timothy R. Keller; his daughter by a previous marriage, Angela McHugh; his grandchildren, Tommie R. Keller, III “Trey”, Ashley Greene (Charles); Lindsay Ward (Steven); Connor Hannigan, Cullen Hannigan and Timothy Keller; great-grandchildren, Steven Ward III “Tres,” Emily Ward and Olivia Ward.
A Memorial Celebration will be held at “The Coming King” Sculpture Prayer Garden in Kerrville, TX, 10:30 a.m. on the September 24, 2022

John P. Coutsonikas (1957 – 2022)
STUYVESANT—John P. Coutsonikas, 65, of Stuyvesant passed away suddenly August 28, 2022. Born in Nashua, NH, he lived in Worcester, MA, until moving to NY with his young family.
He leaves behind: his beloved wife of 47 years, Robin; his son, Timothy; his daughters, Jessica Altomer (CJ) and Danielle Lance (Chris); his five grandchildren, Caiden, Lukas and Jackson Lance, and Eva and Nikolas Altomer; his siblings, James, Jr., Cheryl O’Meara, Michael, Thomas (Olive), Cindy; his brother-in-law, Richard Lacey; many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and -nephews and countless friends and extended family. He was predeceased by: his parents, Eva and James Coutsonikas, Sr.; his brother, Daniel; his sister, Donna Lacey; and his sisters-in-law, Sharon O’Meara, Cheryl K. Noel, and Ann Welch.
He was a proud Army veteran, an avid New England Patriots fan and was most happy when spending time with his grandchildren. For more than 40 years he was a cabinetmaker and a master finish carpenter. He was extremely proud of his work and his family. He was loved by many and will be forever missed. In lieu of flowers, donate to a local food pantry in his honor. There will be no calling hours. Rose M. Russell (1931 – 2022)
CHATHAM—Rose May Russell of Chatham passed away September 1, 2022.
The daughter of the late Nicholas and Mildred Phillips Stabe, she was born November 20, 1931 in Hudson.
She was a lifelong resident of Columbia County, graduating from Chatham High School and Columbia Memorial Hospital Nursing School. After graduation she worked for Dr. Johnson and after his retirement she worked for Dr. Maben.
She enjoyed yard sales, auctions, reading, puzzles, square dancing, bowling and loved music especially Elvis.
She was a member of the Chatham Fire Company’s Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by: her children, Linda Laurange, Edward “Rusty” Russell, Wendi Paul, Terry Russell and Stacey Russell; her 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and her sister, Vi Mckenna.
She was predeceased by her sister, Lillian Christiana

Rev. Joseph H. Tate (1928 – 2022)
NOTRE DAME, IN—The Reverend Joseph Hugh Tate, CSC, 94, died August 26, 2022 at Holy Cross House.
Fr. Tate was born the second oldest of the nine children of James J. and Mary (Cunningham) Tate, March 10, 1928, in Brooklyn. He was paralyzed with polio at the age of three, in 1931, along with his brother, Jim, and his sister, Margaret.
He graduated from James Madison High School, Brooklyn, in 1946, and entered the Congregation of Holy Cross August 15, 1947. He professed First Vows August 16, 1948, and made Final Vows as a brother in the Eastern Province of Holy Cross August 16, 1951. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1957, and a Master of Arts degree in teaching from St. Michael’s College in Winooski, VT, in 1971.
While a brother, Fr. Tate served at Notre Dame High School, West Haven, CT, 1950 to 1951; St. Francis Assisi, Brooklyn, 1951 to 1952; Vincentian Institute, Albany, 1952 to 1954 and 1954 to 1959; Bishop Hendricken High School, Warwick, RI, 1959 to 1961; Holy Cross High School, Flushing, 1961 to 1966 and 1977 to 1978; Pius XII Boys Home, Chester, 1966 to 1977; and as director of religious education at West Point, 1972 to 1975.
Fr. Tate took a leave of absence from 1978 to 1979 to study for the priesthood, and then transferred to the Eastern Province of Priests in 1979. He was ordained to the priesthood June 13, 1981.
After ordination, Fr. Tate assisted in five parishes in the Bethel, VT, area. He then earned his M.Div. from the University of St. Michael in Toronto, Ontario in 1983.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mary Tate. He is survived by his brother, Hugh Tate.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. at the St. Joseph Center in Valatie, September 9, with the Funeral Mass following at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at the Holy Cross Community Cemetery. Geraldine E. McCrum (1952 – 2022)
PITTSFIELD, MA—Geraldine Elizabeth McCrum passed away at the Springside Nursing Home, September 4, 2022 after a long illness.
She was born March 7, 1952 in Syracuse, the daughter of Professor Ronald Stout and Elizabeth (Snyder) Stout. She lived the first 10 years of her life in Hamilton, where her father taught political science at Colgate University.
In 1962 she and her parents moved to the Albany area where her father taught public administration at the graduate school of SUNY Albany.
She graduated in 1970 from Bethlehem High School in Delmar, where she was elected to the National Honor Society. After high school she attended the University of Rochester for one year before transferring to the Albany College of Pharmacy where she graduated in 1976. She was active in the pharmacy field for a time before deciding to get a degree in public administration, which she obtained from SUNY Albany in 1980. She subsequently went to work for New York State, first at the Legislative Commission on Expenditure Review and then for the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal (DHCR) as an administrative analyst, where she met her future husband, Bruce McCrum. They were married in October 1990. She retired from DHCR in December 2002.
A warm, compassionate person, she was a talented artist, who loved animals, music and traveling.
Left to mourn her passing are: her husband, Bruce; her brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Marianna Stout; her two nieces, Peggy Chin and Laura Sosinsky; four grandnephews; a grandniece; various cousins and a good friend, Bobbi Becker.
Her family thanks the staff, past and present, of the Springside Nursing Home for the excellent care they gave to Mrs. McCrum while she was there. Funeral services will be private and are under the direction of the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Valatie.
Michael Tomlin, Jr. (1940 – 2022)
HUDSON—Michael Tomlin, Jr., 81, of Columbiaville passed away Wednesday, August 31 in Hudson. Born October 11, 1940 in Livingston, he was the son of Michael and Nellie (Lyons) Tomlin, Sr.
He was a career bus driver before becoming a farmer. His associations were with Michael S. Johnston, Mountain View, Leprechaun, and Hendrick Hudson Bus Lines.
He was a first lieutenant with the A.B. Shaw Fire Company and a member of the Stockport Fire Company fire police.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife of 56 years, Lillian (Sorokey) Tomlin; son, Kevin Tomlin; grandchildren, Angel, Alicia, and Kevin, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Sophia, Reece and Hasily; brother-in-law, Alan and Dawn Sorokey; his main farmhand and protégé, Chris; his niece/adopted daughter, Terri Holmes; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Tomlin was predeceased by his granddaughter, Jessica.
Graveside services were September 6 in Livingston Cemetery. Arrangements were with the Bates & Anderson-Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, Hudson.
