James Nero (1952 – 2020)
ALBANY—James Nero, 67, of Greenport died Sunday, March 15, 2020 at Albany Medical Center.
Born in Hudson March 26, 1952, he was the son of the late Anthony F. and Bessie L. (Cole) Nero.
“Jim” was a 1971 graduate of Hudson High School and later served in the New York Army National Guard from 1971 to 1977. He was an employee of Mephisto Tool Company in Hudson for 20 years, and then American Bio Medica in Kinderhook. He was a big New York Giants and Yankees fan. He was a health nut, spent many hours in his basement gym lifting weights and won many awards as a Natural Masters body-builder.
He enjoyed yearly cruises to the Caribbean with his family. He will be missed by his family including: his brothers, Anthony and his wife Jetty, Michael and Thomas; his sister, Nancy and her husband Mike; nieces and nephew, Nicole, Jason, Kimberly and Sarah.
There are no calling hours. At his request, cremation was private and a memorial service will be announced this spring. His ashes will be interred in the family plot at Cedar Park Cemetery. Mary E. Nostrand (1937 – 2020)
ALBANY—Mary Ellen Nostrand, 82, of Valatie died Monday, March 16, 2020 at St. Peter’s Hospital.
Born May 6, 1937 in Freeport, she was a housekeeper for 43 years at Barnwell Health Facilities in Valatie. She was an avid bingo player and loved her cats and family, especially her grandchildren.
She is survived by: her five children, George and Byron Nostrand, both of Valatie, Mary Ann Nostrand of Hudson, Muriel Wallach and Eric Nostrand, both of Niverville; four grandchildren, Joshua Pemberton, Jason Wallach, Melanie and Colleen Nostrand; two great-grandchildren, Evan and Loren Wallach. She was predeceased by her husband, George Nostrand, Jr.
Funeral services and burial will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, contributions may be made to the Columbia-Greene Humane Society, 111 Humane Society Road, Hudson 12534. Arrangements are with the Raymond E. Donald S. Hamm (1927 – 2020)
ALBANY—Donald S. Hamm, 92, of Hudson peacefully passed away, Saturday, March 14, 2020 at Albany Medical Center.
He was born in Hudson to Fred and Ethel (Hobbie) Hamm, April 28, 1927.
He attended Hudson Schools before enlisting in the Army. He was a Korean War veteran. “Don” worked as a truck driver for Stockport Lumber, Agway and Main Care Energy before retiring in 1989. He was a former member of Greenport Fire Company Pumper #1. He will always be remembered for his sense of humor, practical jokes, and ability to make everyone around him smile and laugh.
Mr. Hamm was a devoted father to his two sons, Donald (Suzanne Tolomeo) of Castleton and Richard (Judy) of Belle Fouche, SD. He is also survived by: his daughter-in-law, Jane Hamm. He will be greatly missed by his two grandchildren, Donald (Ashley) and Christine, who could not have asked for a better influence in their lives. Wyatt and Austin, his great-grandchildren, loved spending time with their “Poppy.” He is also survived by: his sister, Dorothy Carl and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Sarah (Brandley) and three sisters: Madeline Carle, Hilda Dunbar, and Shirley Markessinis.
The family thanked the staff and nurses of the Firemen’s Home for their wonderful care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Firemen’s Home in Mr. Hamm’s memory.
There will be a graveside service at Schodack Landing Cemetery Saturday, March 21, 2020 at 11:30 a.m. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are with the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, 1015 Kinderhook Street, Valatie.
Mark A. Schiller (1958 – 2020)
CATSKILL—Mark A. Schiller, 61, of Clermont passed away peacefully in the care of The Pines at Catskill, March 10, 2020. He was born April 18, 1958, the son of John and Patricia (Allan) Schiller. He graduated from Bloomfield High School before going on to SUNY Cobleskill where he met his wife, Cynthia. On September 26, 1981, he and Cynthia were married. Together, they raised two wonderful children. He attended Columbia-Greene Community College obtaining his degree in nursing.
Mr. Schiller was a nurse at the Columbia Memorial Hospital prior to his retirement. He had a passion for providing care for each and every patient. He also served in multiple roles within the Clermont Fire Company, including as chief, over the course of three decades of volunteer support. As a family member, he could be counted on to fly to your aid in time of emergency, share a conversation, tell a joke, or laugh to change the mood with his signature booming laugh. He was dedicated to service and could invariably turn the prospects of each situation into something positive. He and Cynthia loved to travel, especially to any place with sun and sand. He was an avid sports fan, loved to read, and enjoyed visits with family.
He is survived by: his two children, Daniel Schiller and Matthew and his wife Emma Schiller; his loving grandson, Hudson Schiller; his father, John Schiller of Victor; his two brothers, Michael and John Schiller; his sister, Ellen Parshall; in addition to many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mr. Schiller was predeceased by his wife, Cynthia Schiller and his mother, Patricia A. Schiller.
A funeral service will be held Friday, March 20, 2020, 11 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church Viewmont, 599 Church Avenue, Germantown. Burial will follow at Viewmont Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday evening, March 19 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Bates and Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, 110 Green Street, Hudson.
Kevin L. Alger (1954 – 2020)
GREENPORT—Kevin L. Alger, 65, of Greenport passed away Thursday, March 13, 2020.
Born July 12, 1954 in Hudson, he was the son of Donald J. Alger and the late Jeanette (Sickler) Alger.
Mr. Alger was an excavation contractor for Greenport Sales. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting. He was also a skilled mechanic who enjoyed working on cars. He was also an annual participant and past champion of the Demolition Derby at the Columbia County Fair.
He is survived by: his father, Donald J. Alger; daughter, Angela Alger; granddaughter, Talia Alger; niece and nephews Kara, Jason and Jeffrey Alger, and sister-in-law, Valerie Alger. In addition to his mother, Jeanette Alger, he was predeceased by his brother, Donald J. Alger, Jr.
