Barbara K. Jenkins (1927 – 2018)
KENT CLIFFS—A Celebration of Life graveside service will be held for Barbara K. Jenkins, wife of the late Dr. C. Murray Jenkins, Saturday, May 18, 2019, 11 a.m. at the Union (Halstead) Cemetery in Kent Cliffs, NY (address: 2339 Route 301, Carmel).
Mrs. Jenkins died at the age of 91 in Holland, Michigan, September 9, 2018.
The Reverend Stephen Wing, her son-in-law, will officiate and music will be provided by her son, George and his wife. There will be a light lunch at a nearby restaurant.
Those planning to attend this service should notify her daughter, Martha Wing, so plans can be made accordingly.
The children of Dr. and Mrs. Jenkins (Martha, George, Raymond, and Robert’s wife) will be in the Columbia County area May 17 through 20. Anyone interested in greeting them at a different time during the weekend in lieu of the cemetery time should contact Martha to make arrangements to connect. Charles Fischer (1934 – 2019)
HUDSON—Charles “Charlie” Fischer, age 84, of Valatie died Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at Columbia Memorial Hospital.
Born June 28, 1934 in Sand Lake, he worked on the Rate Family Farm in Castleton as a farmhand for many years and also did janitorial work for Coarc in Mellenville.
He is survived by his loving family friends, Richard A. Heeder, Sr., Richard A. Heeder, Jr., Tammy Gregory and Caiden Gregory and his Coarc family.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 26 at the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, 1015 Kinderhook Street (Route 9), Valatie. Burial will be in North Chatham Cemetery at a later date.
William C. Sherlock (1951 – 2019)
VALATIE—William Clinton “Clint” Sherlock cheated and faked death so many times it’s hard to believe that he’s really gone. “We’re still expecting him to recover or yell “boo!” and laugh in our faces.”
As a kid growing up on Kinderhook Lake, he spent his days swimming, rowing and ice skating, and while his athleticism waned later in life, he was especially fond of tooling around the lake with friends and family in Shorty’s pontoon boat. He loved that lake and never strayed far from it throughout his life.
Mr. Sherlock is survived by: his beloved daughters, Erica (Jonny), Kelly, and Valerie; five treasured grandchildren, Veronica, Anthony, Roxy, Alice and Evelyn; three strapping brothers, Chris (Liz), Clayton, and Craig and their five lovely daughters. He was predeceased by his parents.
He adored his girls and secretly confided in each that she was his favorite. Famous for his sense of humor, he made up twisted bedtime stories and frequently played tricks on them, the most notable of which was pretending to be dead Christmas Day 1997. Time together was spent laughing, singing, eating lots of sugar and making memorable mischief. Some life lessons he imparted upon his children were how to drive, check the oil and change a tire; how to clean spectacles to gleaming; the art of a firm handshake; and to stay away from blue dragonflies because they sew your lips shut. He was also the world’s best Yoo-Hoo shaker, big bad wolf impersonator, phony language linguist, and “Pop Pop.”
Among his favorite pastimes was driving around on a sunny day with the sunroof open and the stereo blasting. He enjoyed sitting outdoors near a lake or river reading hardcover biographies. Mr. Sherlock also loved music, film and sports and “if you pricked him he would bleed Yankees pinstripes.” Friends will agree that he was always the life of the party… when he showed up.
Strong-willed to the end, he spent his final weeks stubbornly refusing to give up the ghost to the stunned disbelief of the hospice nurses, but not to those who knew him. One in fact called him “a marvel.” He was a marvel indeed.
A celebration of life in the form of a posthumous roast will be held Sunday, April 28 from 2 to 8 p.m. at Ryan’s Bar & Grill, 1009 Kinderhook Street, Valatie.

Mary Jane Ames (1951 – 2019)
HUDSON—Mary Jane Ames of Hudson passed away on Thursday April 25, 2019 surrounded by her beloved family. She was born September 7, 1951 in Elmira, a daughter of the late William and Betty Schumacher. The family moved to Catskill, where she graduated from St. Patrick’s Academy and High School. She then attended Columbia-Greene Community College where she met her beloved husband, David. They were married December 26, 1971 and shortly thereafter spent the first year of marriage in Germany.
Mrs. Ames was an employee of the Bank of New York in Catskill until the early 1980s. She then was employed at ShopRite in Hudson, and then the Hudson City School District from which she retired after 23 years. She enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Nine and Dine Golf League at Catskill Golf Club, and the Loose Ladies Golf League at Sunny Hill. She also enjoyed yoga, mah-jongg, gardening, traveling and walking, but most of all she loved and enjoyed being with her family. She was a wonderful friend to many.
Mrs. Ames is survived by: her husband, David; sons, David M. (Mary) of Valatie, Christopher of Boston, MA, and Daniel of NYC; her beloved grandchildren, Camdyn, Haley, Ashley and Brayden Ames, all of Valatie; siblings, Patricia (Anthony) Tuczynski, James (Maryanne) Schumacher, Charles Schumacher, Michael (Lisa) Schumacher, Andrew (Julie) Schumacher, Joan (Robert) Abrahamsen and Judith (Peter) Kusminsky; her in-laws, William Ames, Deborah Ames and Rebecca (Walt) Norvell; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her brothers, Thomas and Edmund Schumacher.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, April 30, 2019, 10 a.m. from Holy Trinity Parish, St. Mary’s Church, 429 East Allen Street, Hudson. Interment will follow in Cedar Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, 110 Green Street, Hudson.
