Alfred J. Zeliph, Jr. (1949 – 2018)
TIVOLI—Alfred James “Jimmy” Zeliph, Jr., passed away October 22, 2018 at home in Tivoli.
Born March 3, 1949 in Peekskill, he was the first born of Alfred James Zeliph, Sr., and Doris Alicia (Emaus) Zeliph.
He graduated from Lakeland High School in Shrub Oak in 1966. Soon after graduation he was drafted into the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1970 with the rank of specialist 4, stationed in Korea. He reenlisted and again served in Korea. He was self-employed as a subcontractor.
Mr. Zeliph was “big brother” to Harvey Zeliph of Coxsackie, Ronald and his wife Eileen Zeliph of Germantown, Philip Zeliph of Catskill, and his sister and dedicated caregiver, Alberta Zeliph at home in Tivoli.
He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Jennifer and her husband Jeffrey Madigan, Jason and his wife Colleen Zeliph, Jeffrey and his wife Courtney Zeliph, and Michelle Zeliph and fiance’ Jesse; his great nephews, Zachery, Derek, Brett, Travis, Jacob, Ethan, Jason Jr., Tommy and Jack; one great niece, Christina; one aunt, Barbara Zoll of Erie, Illinois, and dozens of cousins throughout the United States. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Richard and Charles Zeliph.
In 1985, Mr. Zeliph suffered a near fatal accident and sustained head trauma. After spending months in the hospital and rehab, he came home to Tivoli to be cared for by his family. He was confined to a wheelchair and had little short term memory. He slowly got stronger.
Mr. Zeliph enjoyed telling stories of his past as well as some tall tales. He loved to hear the roar of a motorcycle and to see one on the road. He relished talking about race cars and watching races. He toured Daytona International Speedway in April.
Mr. Zeliph enjoyed spending time with family and friends. In his spare time he was content with a fresh deck of cards to play solitaire or dominoes. A simple ride in the car was enjoyed, and was even better if there was a stop for ice cream, which had to be vanilla.
He enjoyed traveling with family and friends: road trips to Florida, Maine and Virginia with his mother and sister; other trips with his niece, Michelle and sister to Iowa, Rhode Island and Long Island. He enjoyed cruises with family and friends and had been to St. George and Halifax, Canada, Bermuda, Bahamas and Florida. His last trip was to Ireland in August.
He attended meetings at the Red Hook Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He enjoyed learning of his creator and having a growing relationship with him and his son.
He attended Tenbrooke Common’s Adult Day Care in Lake Katrine. He will be missed by the staff, Nancy and Jill, as well as his friends in the program.
A memorial service is scheduled November 17, 1 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Red Hook. Burial will be at a later date at the convenience of the family.
