Philip Hamm, Sr. (1942 – 2015)

VALATIE—Philip A. Hamm, Sr., 73, of Greenport passed away Saturday, May 2, 2015.

Born April 16, 1942 in Hudson, he was the son of the late Grace (Becker) Hamm and the late Henry C. Hamm.

He grew up with many brothers and sisters playing throughout the neighborhoods of Hudson as a child. He would also go on adventures along the banks of the Hudson River gathering snakes and snails, as well as an occasional turtle, much to his mother’s dismay and the turtle’s.

As he grew so did his interest in 1950s pop culture and cars in general. He could often be found on Route 9 in Greenport Saturday nights drag racing his friends back when it was a much less traveled road. His tooling about the county inevitably took him to other towns. One being Chatham where he met his wife of 51 years, Lucille, “on one Elvis speaker filled evening.”

As a young father he took his kids to many of his old childhood haunts. Telling stories, in retrospect, of fanciful woe and exaggerated peril to keep the young ones away from dangerous places along the banks of the Hudson River. He instilled a great appreciation for nature and the machines that occupy it.

He ran his own garage, Phil’s Auto Body Shop for more than 40 years. The business started out of the family garage often filled with dust and fumes until dark. Then he took the business to Green Street in Hudson where he was able to work on many cars at once and have a small crew of close personal friends lending a valuable hand. The business finally ended up on Route 9 in Greenport, where he worked the remaining years of his career passing on his skills.

Mr. Hamm is survived by: his wife, Lucille M. (Tiffany) Hamm; two sons, Phil Hamm (daughter-in-law, Donna M. Coons) and Jeff Hamm as well as grandchildren. Of his siblings only one sister survives, Marian (Hamm) Bishop, as well as many nieces and nephews. His brothers and sisters that have passed are: Grace (Hamm) Phillips, George Hamm, Frank Hamm, Lillian (Hamm) Cunningham, Rose Mary Hamm and Henry Hamm.

Calling hours are Thursday, May 7, 2015 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, 110 Green Street, Hudson.
