Virginia Gerber

Virginia M. Gerber (1939 – 2021)

GHENT—Virginia Margaret (Van Vliet) Gerber, age 82, of Ghent passed away in her home, September 29, 2021 surrounded by family.

“Ginny,” as she was known, was born July 8, 1939 to loving parents LeRoy and Helen (Mawhinney) Van Vliet in Brooklyn. Her family officially moved from Bay Ridge Brooklyn to Ghent in 1953, after spending summers there at her grandmother’s for many years. She graduated from Chatham High School in 1957.

She married her husband and best friend of 50 plus years, Paul Gerber September 12, 1959. Together they built a home in Ghent that was full of love, laughter and four children. She regarded her faith very highly and attended church at Saint Luke’s in Chatham for many years. She had several jobs throughout her life, including as a lab tech in Albany and at the Berry Farm in Chatham. Her most adored job, though, was being a mother.

She was an incredible seamstress and had a keen eye for needlework, often creating portraits of family using nothing but a piece of canvas and some thread. She also loved a good book, a walk on the beach, and listening to some of her favorite musicians like Roy Orbison, Neil Diamond or Jewel. She could most often be found in her screen house with a hot cup of tea and, for those lucky enough, a cup for then and some good conversation. Her presence alone was enough to calm even the toughest of nerves.

Though there were many adventures and accomplishments in her life, it is clear that her greatest pride and joy was her family. It is through them that her love will continue to shine through these dark times. She was loved by all who had the privilege of meeting her.

She is survived by: her children, Paul Gerber (Cathy), Jennifer Jennings (Louis), Lee Gerber (Wanda), Vincent Gerber (Theresa), grandchildren, Melissa Sopris (Phil), Matthew Jennings, Tanner Jennings, Brittney Barnes (Anthony), Lance Gerber, Amanda Oldakowski (Nick), and the late Nicholas Gerber; great grandchildren, Andrew and Lily Sopris, and Amelia Barnes; her brother, Albert Van Vliet (Donna); her niece and nephew, John Van Vliet (Susan) and Wendi Wolfe (David) and great-niece, Kimberly, and in-laws Ronald and Joan Gerber. She was predeceased by her parents, LeRoy and Helen Van Vliet and husband, Paul Gerber.

A private prayer and burial service for friends and family was held October 2, 2021 at Ghent Union Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in may be made to Community Hospice of Columbia/Greene.
