Edna M. D. Dawson (1928 – 2017)
HILLSDALE—Edna May Davis Dawson, known to most as “Babe,” of Hillsdale passed away December 2, 2017 after a short but hard fought battle.
She was born April 2, 1928 in College Point, daughter of Charles E. and Edna Vinny Cool Davis.
Mrs. Dawson is survived by: her husband and best friend of 70 years, Samuel; her daughters, Anne O’ Connell of Holden, MA, (Bill), Sandra Dawson of Hillsdale (Dave); son, Samuel Dawson, Jr. (Sharon) of Hillsdale; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Betsy Sue and her two brothers and one sister.
Family members both near and far were always the center of her life. A tiny but tough woman, she was her husband’s backup whether on the dairy farm or in local politics. She will always be known for her homemade pies.
Mrs. Dawson was a graduate of Roeliff Jansen Central School class of 1946. She was a founding member of the Hillsdale Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary, a member of the North Hillsdale Methodist Church, and of the Hillsdale Grange.
Calling hours are at Peck and Peck Funeral Home, 8063 Route 22, Copake, Wednesday, December 6 from 4 to 7 p.m. Services are Thursday, December 7 at the North Hillsdale Methodist Church, 11a.m. with burial immediately following in the North Hillsdale Cemetery.
Thomas E. Eitleman (1938 – 2017)
ALBANY—Thomas Edward Eitleman, 79, of Albany passed away December 1, 2017.
He was born in Ghent to Donald E. Eitleman and DeEtta E. Shufelt.
He attended school in Valatie, then joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia and served for four years. He was employed by Clemente Brothers for 15 years and was a member of the Local Teamsters Union #294. After he retired from the Teamsters Union, he owned and ran the Tradewinds Tavern on Main Street in Valatie for several years. After that, he began his career as a salesman for Motor Manuals where he worked for 40 years.
Mr. Eitleman is survived by: his daughters, DeEtta Stancari and her husband, Frank Stancari of Ghent and his daughter, Lori Eitleman of White Plains; his mother, DeEtta Shufelt Alessandrini of Albany; his nephew, Donald R. Eitleman, Jr. of Nassau; nieces, Kammie Eitleman Kowalski of Valatie, Shelly Eitleman MacGiffert of Ft. Myers, FL; and several great-nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Lydia Couture Eitleman; his father, Donald E Eitleman and his brother, Donald R. Eitleman.
Visitation will be held at the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, 1015 Kinderhook Street, Valatie, Wednesday, December 6 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. There will be a private service Thursday, December 7 for the family at Albany Rural Cemetery, Albany.
Donald J. Planz (1943 – 2017)
GREENPORT—Donald J. Planz, 74, of Greenport passed away peacefully at home December 2, 2017 surrounded by his family, and his beloved cat Misty.
He was born April 10, 1943 to John and Evelyn (Schermerhorn) Planz of Ghent.
He graduated from Hudson High School and went on to work as a custodian at Ichabod Crane School District until his retirement.
On July 14, 1962 he married the love of his life, Susan (Abitabile) Planz. Together they enjoyed 52 years of marriage until her passing in 2015.
Mr. Planz is survived by: his two daughters, Marie and her husband Richard Moore of Claverack and Valerie and her husband David Rutkowski of Hannacroix; his six grandchildren, Richard (Kristin) Moore Jr., Helena (Michael) Spooner, Melinda (Brian) Hamm, David Rutkowski Jr., Katrina Oszust and Lenora (Randy) Rutkowski; seven great-grandchildren, Braden, Kylie, Kasey, Carter, Kodi, Cassidy, Liam and Jaxtyn; his brother, Philip (Maureen) Planz of Hudson; his sister, Jean (Robert) Wildermuth of Stuyvesant; his mother-in-law, Regina Abitabile of Ghent; his brother-in-law, Paul (Patricia) Abitabile of Hudson; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Mr. Planz was also predeceased by his step-father, Fred Scheu.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at noon from the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, 110 Green Street, Hudson. Interment will follow in Cedar Park Cemetery. Visitation precedes the service at 11:30 a.m. The family thanks the Eddy and Community Hospice staff for all their support.
