Jeffrey Cole (1969 – 2019)
ALBANY—August 10 the Lord called Jeffrey Cole of Valatie home after suffering a catastrophic stroke August 1 at Albany Medical Center.
He was born in Hudson to Elizabeth (Greene) Alecksynas and the late James R. Cole.
Besides his mother and stepfather (Harry), he is survived by: the love of his life his daughter, Emma Elizabeth Cole of Preston Hollow; brother, Christopher Cole of Valatie; niece, Madison Cole of Valatie; nephew, Zackery Cole of Valatie, along with several cousins. He was predeceased by his nephew, Christopher Cole.
Mr. Cole attended Ichabod Crane Central then Hudson High School, where he graduated. He attended and graduated from Columbia-Greene Community College. He worked for several years at Berkshire Farm for Boys and Hillcrest Center in Great Barrington, MA. helping troubled youth. Later in life he changed careers and became a successful barber for many years. He was a free spirit and traveled throughout Europe. Amsterdam was his favorite. He loved St. Maarten and cruising as well. Mr. Cole enjoyed good food and many restaurants. He always knew where to find the “best hot dog” in the area. He was chronically ill for the past three years. Besides spending time with his daughter and family, he enjoyed sports, especially NFL football. He knew all the players’ names and stats. He will be missed by his family and many friends. The family gives special thanks to Amy Lasher. “Thank you for being by Jeff’s side for many hours during this trying time. You were a great comfort to us all.”

Betty R. M. Edge (1938 – 2019)
KINDERHOOK—Betty Ruth (Maxwell) Edge of Kinderhook, formerly of Ringwood, NJ, peacefully departed this world at the age of 80, August 12, 2019, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Chattanooga, TN, October 15, 1938 to the late Ovie Odis and Ruth Marie (Boerger) Maxwell. The eldest of three children, she is survived by her brothers, Douglas (Gwen) Maxwell and Lon Maxwell. She was a graduate of the Lutheran School of Nursing, St. Louis, MO. Married for 60 years, she is survived by her husband, the Reverend Thomas Leslie Edge; daughter, Dr. Elizabeth (Andrew) Howard; son, Christopher (Alison) Edge; daughter, Angela (Scott) Sadlo; grandchildren, Christopher and Paul Howard, Geoffrey Edge, Emmanuelle and Mark Sadlo; seven nieces; four nephews; and countless friends.
A servant of Christ, Mrs. Edge worked as a registered nurse for more than 40 years. She faithfully and carefully supported her husband’s ministry at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Ringwood, NJ, for more than 30 years. She attended The Cathedral of All Saints upon her move to the Capital District. With a loving hand she nurtured her grandchildren through childhood, relishing the opportunity to participate in their lives, and will forever be their “Nana.” With a sense of style and grace, her warm smile and southern charm brought light to all those around her. She cherished flowers and tenderly cultivated them. A selfless caregiver, she provided ceaseless care to her husband, Thomas until her final day. All who knew her will miss her loving spirit, boundless generosity, warmth, and compassion.
A funeral Mass was held Saturday, August 17 at Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church, 107 State Street in Albany, followed by a Christian burial at Kinderhook Cemetery, County Route 21, Kinderhook.

Erna I. Dings (1934 – 2019)
INMAN, KS—Erna I. Dings, 85, died August 15, 2019 at Pleasant View Home, Inman, KS.
She was born March 24, 1934 to Herman P. and Katie Androes Heidebrecht in Dalhart, TX, in a dug out.
She moved to Inman, KS, with her family at the age of one. She attended Inman schools and graduated from Inman High School in 1952. She lived in a Christian family and was baptized by the Reverend William Wilkinson in 1950. She joined the Inman Mennonite Church at that time. She held several positions in the church since then.
She worked with technical writers at Sterling Winthrop Research Institute in Rensselar for nine years.
She married Lester C. Dings in 1977. She and her husband moved to Columbia, MO, in 1990. There, she worked as a sales associate for Dillard’s for 18½ years. Mr. Dings passed away September 18, 2010.
Mrs. Dings is survived by: her son, Greg (Sigrid) Krause of Tonkawa, OK; stepchildren, Chuck (Ellen) Dings of Nassau and Claudia Dings of Valatie; brothers, Leo Heidebrecht of Wichita and Hank (Ann) Heidebrecht of Newton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Marvin, Harvey and Alva; and three sisters, Esther, Ruby and Dorothy.
Family received friends Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at Buhler Mortuary, 120 North Main Street, Buhler, KS. Graveside services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at the North Inman Cemetery. Memorial services follow at 10:30 a.m. at the Inman Mennonite Church. Alice S. Runge (1925 – 2019)
MILLERTON—Alice Shoemaker Runge, 94, of Millerton passed away peacefully at home to be with the Lord surrounded by her family, Sunday, August 18, 2019.
She was born March 20, 1925 to William and Ruth. She was raised in South Bound Brook, NJ, enjoying a very happy childhood alongside her late siblings, Robert and Marion.
She attended Trenton College, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in teaching, specializing in work with the deaf.
On June 17, 1950, she married her beloved husband of 38 years, the late Reverend Robert Runge. Mrs. Runge supported her husband in his duties as a minister throughout New Jersey and New York, while raising their six children, all of whom currently reside in Millerton. She and her late husband helped to enrich seven congregations over the course of his career, finishing their ministry at the Smithfield Presbyterian Church in Amenia. Mrs. Runge took great delight in being part of the local community and was known by all to be compassionate and selfless.
She enjoyed many hobbies and passions. She was patriotic and loved American history. When not reading about Abraham Lincoln, she could be found working on puzzles, maintaining her flower garden or walking through Millerton, catching up with her countless friends and acquaintances. A lifetime walker, she enjoyed the journey as much as the destination. Mrs. Runge was a talented decorator, and each new congregation and move offered her the opportunity to build a home for her large family. She took great pride and joy in acquiring antiques. She is remembered by her family for her kindness, dignity and sense of humor.
Mrs. Runge was a devoted and loving mother. The matriarch of a large, boisterous, and close-knit family, she found her greatest joy at home among her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She beamed most brightly at birthday celebrations, Sunday service, and the holidays when the entire family would come together with her at the center of it all.
Mrs. Runge is survived by: her children, Marion McGhee (Edwin), Christopher Runge (Margaret), David Runge (Birgit Jensen), Robert Runge (Dawn), Naomi Couture (Bob) and Martha Kitchen (Todd); her 12 grandchildren, John Runge, Robert Runge (Michelle), Margaret Eschbach (Eric), Olivia Runge Clark (William), Erica Runge (Jacob Freeland), David Runge, Sarah Runge, Aimee Couture (Daniel Gerstle), Rhea Jensen, Alyse Jones (Tyler), Hannah Kitchen, Jacob Kitchen, and her eight great-grandchildren, Robbie, Nathan, Zoey, Caroline, Megan, Krista, Henry and Effie.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, August 21, 2019 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Peck and Peck Funeral Home, 8063 State Route 22 in Copake.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 22, 2019, 11 a.m. at the Smithfield Presbyterian Church, 656 Smithfield Valley Road, Amenia.
Interment will follow at the Irondale Cemetery, Millerton.

Ronald Platner, Sr. (1931 – 2019)
GLENS FALLS—Ronald Platner, Sr., 88, of Greenport passed away August 14, 2019 at Glens Falls Hospital.
He was born February 14, 1931 in Germantown. He graduated from Germantown High School and shortly thereafter he married the late Vivian Lighthart.
“Ron” worked for New York State in the division of child protective services. He was a lover of animals both big and small and had his own horse farm.
He and his wife were known in the harness racing world, having raced their horses at the Saratoga harness track. He was a New York Yankees fan through and through, especially of Derek Jeter. He enjoyed genealogy and family history, and was an avid reader. Also over the years he had many pen pals from all over the country.
Mr. Platner is survived by: his daughter-in-law, Lois Platner; grandson, Ronald Platner, III; his great-granddaughters, Madelyn and Mia Nestoryak; his nephew, William and his wife Anna Kraft.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his son, Ronald Platner, Jr. and his sister, Marilyn Kraft.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, August 20, 2019 from the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, 110 Green Street, Hudson. Interment followed in Cedar Park Cemetery.
Loretta Bender (1931 – 2019)
GERMANTOWN—Loretta Bender, 88, of Germantown passed away Saturday, August 17, 2019.
Born February 5, 1931 in Poughkeepsie, she was the daughter of William and Laura (Pells) LaDue.
A lifelong area resident, she graduated from Germantown High School with the class of 1948. Her career was as a dedicated farmer in the family business, Lone Oak Dairy Farm in Livingston. She enjoyed being a member of the Livingston Memorial Church, and its Women’s Guild and choir; the Livingston Fire Company Auxiliary, American Legion and Linlithgo Cemetery Association.
Mrs. Bender’s other interests and joys were traveling, camping, baking, gardening and bird watching. She loved her family, and all the times they shared together, as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her children, Janet (Joe) Singler, Ray (Debbie) Bender and William (Judy) Bender; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Albert Bender, and siblings, Harry LaDue and Dorothy Setterlund.
Visitation hours at the Bates & Anderson-Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, 110 Green Street, Hudson are Wednesday, August 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. Graveside services at the Germantown Reformed Church Cemetery are Thursday, August 22 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mrs. Bender’s name may be made to Whittier Nursing and Rehabilitation Activities.
Marylu Janssen (1936 – 2019)
GOSHEN—Marylu Janssen, 82, of Hillsdale died Thursday, August 15, 2019 at the Valley View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Formerly of Hillsdale, she had lived the past few years with her son and daughter-in-law in Middletown.
She was born October 27, 1936 in Hudson, a daughter of the late Clayton and Doris (Jones) Carl.
Mrs. Janssen was a retired bookkeeper for the former Craryville Chevrolet owned by her father. She then worked for Milroy Chevrolet of Hudson and Catskill.
She was an avid softball and basketball player for Roe Jan High School. She loved to bowl and enjoyed camping, ceramics and singing.
Survivors include: her son, William c Janssen and wife Joan of Middletown; her brother and sister-in-law, Clayton “Bud” Carl and wife Fran of Craryville; son-in-law, Wayne Bergeron and grandson, Craig Bergeron of Hillsdale, and all of her furry grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Janssen was predeceased by her husband, William H. Janssen; a daughter, Cindy Bergeron and a son, Brian Janssen.
The family thanks the staff at Valley View for the care and compassion offered to Mrs. Janssen.

James A. Byler (1988 – 2019)
TIJUANA, MEXICO—James Allen Byler, 30, of Canaan born August 15, 1988, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, August 7, 2019.
He was diagnosed with Burkitt’s Lymphoma at the beginning of March 2019. After several months of chemotherapy treatment in Albany, he was taken to Tijuana, Mexico for further treatment, where he passed away.
He was the son of Crist and Anna Mary Byler of 1605 County Route 5, Canaan 12029.
He is survived by: his parents; two brothers and two sisters, Jerrold (Kristen) Byler of Ghent, Lutricia (Gerald) Schrock of Penn Yan, Crist Byler, IV, (Emeline) Byler of Dundee OH, and Dorcas Byler of Canaan.

Neil R. Gentile (1948 – 2019)
GREENPORT—Neil R. Gentile, 71, of Greenport died Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at his home.
Born April 1, 1948, he was the son of the late Robert and Elena (Liquori) Gentile. He was a graduate of the University of Bridgeport and worked for the NY State Department of Labor for more than 30 years. He was a member of Sacred Heart/ Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Shrine.
He will be missed by: his brother, Robert and (Brigitte) Gentile of Ghent, as well as his nieces, Krista and Erika Gentile. Funeral services were at the Sacco-McDonald-Valenti Funeral Home, 700 Town Hall Drive, Greenport, Tuesday, August 20.
Allen D. Spear (1959 – 2019)
BRAINARD—Allen D. Spear, 60, of Brainard passed away suddenly Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at his home.
He was born in North Kingstown, RI, the son of the late Donald W. and Beverly Tataro Spear.
Mr. Spear was an Army veteran. He retired from the NY State Commission of Legislative Drafting where he was a deputy director and at the time of his death. He was the owner of Allendale’s Antiques in Brainard.
Mr. Spear was predeceased by his dear friend, Thomas V. Carol, Sr.
Survivors include: his brother, Kenneth Spear of Greenfield, MA; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends called at the Thomas P. Mooney Funeral Home, 11 Elm Street, Nassau, Saturday, August 17. Interment was in East Nassau Cemetery.
Michael J. Bost (1956 – 2019)
HUDSON—Sunday, August 18, 2019, Michael Joseph Bost, 63, of Hudson lost a brief battle with lung cancer at home surrounded by his family.
Born with his twin Michelle, May 29, 1956 in Hudson, he was the son of the late Charles E. “Squeaky” and Ethyl J. (Evans) Bost, Sr.
He attended school in the Hudson and Ockawamick School districts. He was employed by various local painting companies and went on to become proficient in the commercial/industrial painting arena.
Mr. Bost loved all children. He was very animated and always the fun uncle to his nieces, nephews and then their children. He will be remembered for his beautiful smile and his ability to bring smiles to the faces and laughter to the souls of all who met him. Everyone he loved was blessed with a unique nickname from him.
The shining star of his life was his only child, his son, Michael Whitney of Jacksonville, FL.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Curtis Bost; brothers-in-law, Charles Jackson and Sylvester Lowery.
Survivors include: his twin sister, Michelle (Jeannie) Bost of Kingston; sister, Sandra Lowery of Hudson; brothers, Charles Jr. and Granville (Grant) Bost of Hudson; four nephews, Nate and Jason Bost; Charles Bost, III, Jeremy Bost and Tyrone Vandemark; four nieces, Adia Bost, Brianna Vandemark, Tiffany Bost and his “Cupcake” Amber Bost-Snyder; great-nieces, -nephews, extended family and friends.
The family thanks hospice for its support and his niece, Amber for her unwavering love and gentle, compassionate care of “Unc.” It made the difference. “HOLLA!”
Family and friends will gather for a graveside service Sunday, September 1 at 11 a.m. in the family plot in Cedar Park Cemetery, Hudson (near the pond).
