Lois Cassina (1918 – 2014)
VALATIE—Lois Cassina, 96, of Valatie died December 7, 2014 at her home.
Born September 30, 1918 in Valatie, she was the daughter of the late Augustus and Laura L. (Cole) Cassina.
Ms. Cassina was a clerk for the State of New York. She retired in 1969. She was interested in genealogy and volunteered at the Columbia County Historical Society in Kinderhook.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 10, 11 a.m. at the Raymond E Bond Funeral Home, 1015 Kinderhook Street, Valatie with the Reverend Nick Becker officiating.
Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Contributions may be made to The Community Hospice of Columbia/Greene, 47 Liberty Street, Catskill 12414.
Lowell Forman Applegate (1977 – 2014)
GHENT—Lowell Forman Applegate, 37, of Ghent died unexpectedly December 4, 2014 at his home.
Born February 16, 1977 in Hudson, he was the son of Warren Applegate of Kinderhook and Kathrynn Applegate of Valatie.
He was a self-employed painter.
Besides his parents, he is survived by a sister, V. Emily Applegate of San Francisco, CA, and a brother, Ned Applegate of Albany.
Memorial services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Laura Mae Merante (1934 – 2014)
HUDSON—Laura Mae (Benner) Merante, 80, of Hudson passed away peacefully at home with her loving family by her side, Monday, December 8.
She was one of nine children of Dewey and Marguerite Benner. She was born October 28, 1934.
Mrs. Merante was a lifelong resident of Hudson. She and her husband of 62 years, Antonio Merante (Tony) owned and operated Tony’s IGA in Hudson for 45 years. During the store years, the Merantes made many friends who became their extended family.
Mrs. Merante was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed ceramics, country music, the New York Mets and her extensive collection of teapots. What she loved most of all was enjoying the company of her large family. She had a wonderful sense of humor, which she shared with everyone until her final moments.
She is survived by: her husband; her seven children, Donna (Jake) Hoffman, Antonio (Louise) Merante, Jr., Thomas Merante, Sr., Michael (Paula) Merante, Dominic Merante and partner Diana Gaurino, Laurie (Gerald, Jr.) Ranita and Rocco (Deidre) Merante; her grandchildren, Marlena Peduzzi, Karrie Cox, Jacob Hoffman, III, Nicholas and Timothy Merante, Thomas, Jr., Jonathan, Christopher, and Tyler Merante, Mollie and Kayla Merante, Jenna Merante, Matthew and Andrew Merante; many great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; two sisters, Tiny Hallenbeck and Dorothy Gardner.
She is predeceased by her brother, Robert and sisters, Ginny, Gladys, Betty, Peggy and Genny.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, December 11 at the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, 110 Green Street, Hudson. Services will be conducted Friday, December 12, 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Cedar Park Cemetery.
Christopher Andrew Bailly (1957 – 2014)
CHATHAM—On the morning of December 5, 2014, Christopher “Chris” Bailly, 56, passed away from health complications at his home.
He was born in Sault St. Marie, Michigan, December 22, 1957 to Helen and Henry Bailly, and is survived by both of his parents; his brothers, Henry “Jay” and Thomas; his sisters, Carol and Susanna; his son, Chris “C.J.” Bailly; his nephew, Henry John and his nieces, Sarah and Rhiannon.
Mr. Bailly worked throughout his life as a master mechanic and welder, taking adventurous jobs as far away as Puerto Rico to weld underwater cables in the wake of Hurricane Hugo, and traveling with the P.T. Barnum and Bailey Circus as a maintenance man on its train. He will forever be remembered for his quick and easy humor, his enduring thoughtfulness, his eagerness to help anyone he could and his willingness to take on any challenge. He was dedicated to his family, spending his free time helping out his brothers and sisters and helping his nephew in-law build his business, doting on his great nieces and nephews whenever he could, and visiting his son for the Super Bowl every year. He will be deeply missed by his immediate and extended family and friends for the joy he spread, wherever he was.
There will not be any calling hours and the service will be private for the immediate family. A memorial service will be held to celebrate Mr. Bailly’s life at a date to be determined. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice and in Mr. Bailly’s honor, he would have asked that anyone who could to be a donor as this was very important to him.

Carol A. Coons (1946 – 2014)
RED HOOK—Carol A. Coons, 68, of Red Hook passed away, Sunday, December 7, 2014 at her home.
Born October 25, 1946, in Germantown, she was the daughter of the late David and Grace (Saulpaugh) Coons.
For many years Ms. Coons worked as at Red Hook Cold Storage in Red Hook and also worked as a crossing guard in the Poughkeepsie School District.
She is survived by: two daughters, Nisca Coons and Pam Pitcher, both of Red Hook; a son, Jack Pitcher of Massachusetts; a sister, Rose Marie Haner of Claverack; a brother, Gary C. Coons of Clermont; six grandchildren, Cory Coons, Sheena Mowris, Dane Mowris, Tiffany Mowris, Faith Mowris and Julian Pitcher, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins..
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, George Coons.
Friends may call at the Burnett & White Funeral Homes, Thursday, December 11 from 1 to 2 p.m. with a service to be held at 2 p.m. The Reverend Eric Titus will officiate. Burial will be at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, Red Hook.

Erling Rosand (1919 – 2014)
LIVINGSTON—Erling Ole Rosand, 95, passed away peacefully at home in Livingston, November 29, 2014.
He was born in Bremsnes, Norway, February 5, 1919, one of nine children born to Ole Rosand and Johanne Hjelseth.
At 18, he joined the merchant ships and emigrated to the U.S. He was proud to serve during World War II as a U.S. Merchant Marine and survived many perilous journeys across the North Atlantic providing necessary supplies to the allies. During one of these voyages, his ship was struck by a torpedo and sunk. Unlike so many other brave merchant seamen of this era, he survived. As a child, his mother told him he was born with a “victory cap,” meaning that he had been born lucky. His life proved this to be true over and over again. His time as a merchant seaman took him across the globe—there were few places he hadn’t traveled—providing many stories that he enjoyed sharing and which gave his listeners great pleasure.
After the war, as a young man living in Brooklyn, he met and married Joan (nee Belle-Oudry) who predeceased him. Together, they owned a popular Norwegian Bar and Grill in Bay Ridge known as Skansen, where he developed his passion for cooking and food, which would continue throughout his life.
His love for music and singing led him to join the Norwegian Singing Society in Brooklyn, as a baritone. After moving to Livingston in 1973, he continued singing and joined the Catskill Glee Club. He participated in rehearsals and concerts until last year. Mr. Rosand was beloved by all who knew him. He had a quick smile and a twinkle in his eye, a captivating humility and innocence, and a consistently generous heart.
He is survived by: his son, Randy Rosand; his grandson, Aidan; his daughter, Karen Rosand and his son-in-law, Dennis Seminara of Claverack.
His family is honored to have had him as a model of integrity, warmth, optimism and kindness. “We will hold you in our hearts for eternity.” A memorial service is planned for January.
