Powers W. Bradley (1935 – 2017)
ALBANY—Powers “Brad” Bradley of Kinderhook Lake and Millerton passed away peacefully after a long illness November 6, 2017 at Albany Medical Center.
Born May 24, 1935, he was the son of the late William and Margaret (Powers) Bradley.
He was predeceased by his siblings: James, William, John, Helenmarie Mosher and Betty, as well as, close family members, Leo and Lew.
Mr. Bradley graduated from LaSalle Institute and Manhattan College. He is survived by: his wife of 56 years, Alice (Holmes) Bradley; his six children; 20 grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
His children include: Lisa McCormack (Christopher), Theresa Anderson (Kevin), Maureen Bradley (David Shoop), Coleen Byrnes (Richard), Eileen Souliotis (Mark) and Matthew Bradley (Marlyn); grandchildren, Allison, Brian, Liam, Paul, Heather (Lizzy), Jennifer, Samuel, Sarah, Zachary, Meghan, Katie, Danny, Shannon, Michael, Mallory, Alicia, Darren, Danielle, Daphne and Davin.
Mr. Bradley was a long-time member of the Elks Club 2530. He enjoyed his time teaching and coaching at Ichabod Crane Central School and Webutuck Central Schools. He loved to play golf, living on Kinderhook Lake and spending time with his family.
Family and friends were invited to the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 1025 Kinderhook Street, Valatie, Saturday, November 11 for a Memorial Mass. Burial followed in the church’s cemetery. Salvatore J. Costanzo (1942 – 2017)
TROY—Salvatore J. Costanzo, 75, of Stuyvesant died Monday, November 13, 2017 at The Springs.
Born November 11, 1942 in Schenectady, he was the son of the late James and Mary (Forte) Costanzo.
Mr. Costanzo graduated from Linton High School in Schenectady and served aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Coral Sea with the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.
He was the assistant to the director at the New York State Department of Veterans’ Affairs in Albany for many years and was a life member of both the Stuyvesant Fire Company and the Stuyvesant Falls VFW Post #9593, as well as, a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Stuyvesant. He enjoyed spending time with his grandson, collecting coins and watching sports.
He is survived by: his wife, Nina C. (Keene) Costanzo; a son, David Costanzo (Kathleen) of Leeds; his sister, Marie Ostrander of Williamstown, MA; and his grandson, Mark Costanzo.

William J. Whalen (1919 – 2017)
GHENT—William J. Whalen, 98, died November 9, 2017 at Whittier Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation following a long illness.
He was born in Newburgh, April 13, 1919 the son of Mary (Barclay) and William R. Whalen.
After his family moved to Ravena in 1932, he attended and graduated from Catherdral Academy in Albany.
Upon graduating he was employed as a clerical worker for New York State for several years. From 1940 to 1942 he worked in the signal department of New York Central Railroad, repairing and installing signals.
He was drafted into the Army during World War II and served as a clerk-technician in the 579th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion, achieving the rank of corporal. After his discharge in 1946, he settled in Hudson with his wife Beatrice (McDonald) and began working at Foster Refrigeration, beginning as an assembly line worker, and retiring in 1984 as vice-president of sales.
Throughout his life he was very active in St. Mary’s / Holy Trinity Parish, Hudson. He served as president of the Parish Pastoral Council for many years; and at Mass he assisted as a lector and extraordinary minister of the Eucharist. He attended daily Mass for many years, and was the most generous in supporting his parish and the Diocese of Albany. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, serving as secretary for many years.
He is survived by more than 20 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by: his wife, Beatrice (McDonald); his sister, Nancy (Phillips) and his brother, Robert P. Whalen.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mary’s Church of Holy Trinity Parish, 429 East Allen Street, Hudson, Monday November 13, 2017. Donations in his memory may be sent to St. Mary’s Church of Holy Trinity Parish, P.O. Box 323, Hudson 12534.

Maryann H. Berlin (1961 – 2017)
KINDERHOOK—Maryann Houghtaling Berlin, 56, of Kinderhook passed away after a long battle with cancer November 11, 2017 at home with her beloved “Lou” Nicholas Berlin by her side.
Born October 1, 1961 in Hudson, she was the daughter of Anna (Cordato) Houghtaling and Lewis Houghtaling, Jr. Mrs. Berlin was employed by DeBrino Caulking Assoc. of Castleton.
She was an expert painter and spent many hours on her crafts, special designs and flower gardens. She could make trash into treasures. She loved to decorate her home with her many finds.

She was predeceased by her beloved son, Joseph Kosnick III; father, Lewis Houghtaling Jr.; nephew, Lewis Houghtaling IV and father-in-law, Donald Berlin.
Visitation hours at the Bates & Anderson Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, 110 Green Street, Hudson are Thursday November 16 from 4 to 6:30 p.m., with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Interment will be private.
Anthony Caprio, Jr. (1952 – 2017)
HUDSON—Anthony Caprio, Jr., 65, of Hudson died Friday, November 3, 2017 in Columbia Memorial Hospital.
Born in the Bronx, April 2, 1952, he was the son of the late Anthony, Sr. and Yolanda Caprio.
Mr. Caprio was a maintenance man in New York City before moving to Hudson. He was a devoted member of the Power and Restoration Church of God on Green Street in Hudson.
He will be greatly missed by: his girlfriend, Joanna Pagan; his daughters, Daisy and Emily Caprio, both of the Bronx; two brothers, Michael and Johnny Caprio.
Calling hours and funeral services were Friday, November 10, 2017 at the Sacco-McDonald-Valenti Funeral Home, 700 Town Hall Drive, Greenport. Pastor Teddy Almovoal officiated at the services. Burial followed in the Linlithgo Rural Cemetery.
Mary Lou Race (1926 – 2017)
ALBANY—Mary Lou Race 91, of Philmont, a lifelong area resident, passed away Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at St. Peters Hospital.
Born June 17, 1926 in Hudson, she was the daughter of the late James and Mary (Marshall) VanValkenburg.
She was the widow of the late Vernon Race, who died in 2001.
Mrs. Race was a cafeteria worker for the Ockawamick Central School District and an active member of St. James Church in Chatham. She was a CMH volunteer (pink lady), member of the Philmont American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, member of the former Sacred Heart Church and was a Sunday School teacher, as well as an avid sports enthusiast.
She will be greatly missed by: her loving daughter, Kathleen M. Race of Hudson; one sister, Joan Preusser of Claverack; sister-in-law, Barbara Centocanti of Hudson; many nieces and nephews; also great- and great-great nieces and nephews including, Malia and Phil Mossman, Linda and Ralph Bielefeldt, Regina Chambers, Christopher and Carol Preusser, Nancy and Scott Dewey. She was predeceased by two sisters, Alice Denfeld and Ellen DeMonia.

Ralph E. Hoag, Sr. (1943 – 2017)
HUDSON—Ralph E. Hoag, Sr., 74, of Philmont passed away peacefully Thursday, November 9, 2017 at Columbia Memorial Hospital.
Born in Philmont, August 30, 1943, he was the son of the late Edward Allen and Julia Hoag.
Mr. Hoag was a heavy equipment operator with the New York State Thruway Authority in East Chatham until his retirement. He was a member of the Mellenville Fire Company; a life member of the Philmont Rod and Gun Club; a 60-year member of the Philmont Methodist Church; Ghent VFW Post 5933; Sheffield, MA, American Legion Post #340; former member of the Philmont Fire Company and the Philmont Rescue Squad. He was an avid dirt track racing fan.
He will be greatly missed by: his loving wife, Pamela Ann (Nason) Hoag at home; his daughter, Tracy and (Thomas) Delaney of Philmont; his son, Ralph E. Jr. and (Patty) Hoag of Philmont; one sister, Isabelle Mazal of Valatie; brother-in-law, George Stutzman of Tilton, NH; granddaughters, Krysten Delaney and Alexys Delaney; step-grandchildren, Jessica and Ginny and step-great-grandchildren, Orion and Danielle.
He was predeceased by his brother, Kenneth Calkins, as well as, two sisters, Martha Stutzman and Betty Rawlings.

Harold Swartz, Jr. (1937 – 2017)
GHENT—Harold Swartz, Jr., 80, of Greenport, a lifelong area resident, died peacefully Friday November 10, 2017 at Whittier Nursing Home.
Born in Hudson, he was the son of the late Harold and Joanna (Stockman) Swartz.
Mr. Swartz served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1959, and was later employed for many years with the New York State Department of Transportation in Martindale.
He is survived by: one son, Douglas (Lori) Swartz; two daughters, Helen Warren and April Brown; stepchildren, Dawn (Russell) Balestra, Debbie (Peter) Bruno; grandson, Rocco Balestra and several other grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by: a brother, Jack and sisters, Peggy (Bruce) Stedman, Terry Dysard, Pat Schrade, Debbie (George) Hotaling, Sharon Swartz-Rathbun and Joan (Penn) Steurwald. Evelina E. Lemelin (1949 – 2017)
ALBANY—Evelina “Eva” Estella Bridges Lemelin Benamati, 68, of Nassau passed away November 12 in Albany.
She was born in Plattsburgh to Ella Mooney and George Bridges, June 23, 1949.
She attended Peru (NY) Central High School and graduated in 1967. She earned an Associate’s Degree in library science from Northwestern (CT) Community College.
“Eva” was employed as the courthouse librarian in Litchfield, CT, for many years. She moved on to work as a self-employed library consultant providing library services to various law firms in Harford, CT, and Albany.
She is survived by: her husband, Dennis Benamati; her children, Suzette Lemelin Wood and Richard Wood of Troy; Alicia Benamati Kelly and Daniel Kelly of Cohoes and Marcus Benamati of Austin, TX; her grandchildren, Emily and Ethan Wood and Joy Kelly; also her siblings, Betsy Pugh, Gloria Blaha, Daniel Bridges, Mary Vann and Susan Iverson; along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Rose.
Ms. Lemelin enjoyed PBS cooking programs, spending time with her grandchildren and reading in her spare time. Memorial donations in Ms. Lemelin’s name may be made to the Nassau Free Library, P.O. Box 436, Nassau 12123.

Victoria W. Repka (1963 – 2017)
HUDSON—Victoria W. Repka, 54, of Chatham passed away suddenly Tuesday morning, November 7, 2017 at Columbia Memorial Hospital.
She was a loving wife, mother, aunt and friend.

She is survived by: her husband, John; two sons, Jon Gough and Daniel Repka as well as, many nieces and nephews. She will be dearly missed by all.

Donna L. Scalera (1955 – 2017)
HUDSON—Donna Lynn Scalera passed away in Columbia Memorial Hospital Hospice after a long courageous battle with cancer Tuesday, November 14, 2017. She was 62.
Born in Camden, NJ, July 24, 1955, she had lived in Kinderhook and Hudson during her adult years. A graduate of Ichabod Crane, she later attended college in Bristol, TN.
Until retirement, Mrs. Scalera worked for many years at the Hudson Family and Cosmetic Dentistry alongside family friend and dentist, Ron Chiminelli.
She enjoyed the simple things in life, like planting and caring for her flowers throughout the year, and her passion for Christmas and painstakingly placing the ornaments she had collected over the many years on the rotating tree, and her skill for wrapping presents that when finished looked like they belonged in a Macy’s store. She enjoyed very much spending time with her close friends. Mrs. Scalera loved the ocean, especially Myrtle Beach which she and her family frequently visited. Her other love was her church (Kinderhook Dutch Reform) led by Pastor Rudy Visser and a congregation she admired.
She will be greatly missed by her family: husband, Richard; daughters, Lauren and Erica;, step-daughters, Melanie Scalera (Angel Rodriguez) and Melinda (Scalera) Peck; grandchildren, Tyler and Aaron Peck, Elijah and Gianna Rodriguez; mother-in-law, Nancy Scalera; brothers, David (Paula) Trout of Simpsonville, SC, and Barry (Jennifer) Eastlack of Galveston, TX; cousin, Diane Long and family of NJ; along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, Theodore and Lillian Mae (Russell) Trout of SC, and father-in-law, John Scalera.
