Winifred Maude Steiger Behrens (1923 – 2015)

OLD CHATHAM—Winifred “Wini” Behrens died March 5, 2015 at her home on Highland Farm.

Born the first day of summer 1923 in Hollis, she was a resident of Old Chatham since 1946 when she arrived with her husband, Edgar Behrens, and infant son. Together they acquired and operated Highland Farm, a Holstein dairy farm.

Recently Mrs. Behrens observed to a grandson that a family today needs two checks to live on whereas in her day one check was enough, but, then she said that she had always worked. With a typewriter bought for her when she was 14 by her carpenter father, she did his billing; after graduation, she worked in the financial district of lower Manhattan and following her marriage in 1943 she worked in army base clerical pools.

At Highland Farm, she managed all the details that a large dairy requires, while raising their four children, cooking and keeping house for hired hands, weekend guests and summer help. She drove a school bus for the Chatham Schools, conducted the local U.S. census every 10 years, and was a director of the Payn Foundation Home.

While also caring for Edgar, whose health was failing, Mrs. Behrens operated her Highland Farm Bed and Breakfast. After Edgar’s death in 2003, she moved to a smaller house on the farm where she happily said she was finally retired.

Mrs. Behrens had served as president of the Chatham PTA, as a 4-H leader, a DC of the Old Chatham Hunt Pony Club, Town of Chatham councilperson, and was a member of the Old Chatham Hunt Club, New Concord Co-op and the Chatham Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

She is survived by: her sister, Margery Anderson of Herkimer; her children, Eric Edgar, Linda Behrens Conway, Gail Day and husband, Stephen, and Judy Behrens; her grandchildren, Ellen Losa Dykeman, Michael Losa, Emily Conway Casale; Marian, Stephen and Simon Day and Julia and Greg Martin.

Mrs. Behrens had a large maternal heart and took into her home many whose lives she changed, she is also survived by Mary Coulson Clark and Penny Coulson Sanchez to whom she was known as “Wini-Mom” and their children; also John Burlingame and Deb Lalley, affectionately known as extra children, summer girls and the farm’s summer helpers. A life well-lived, she gave every bit to everyone, a larger heart is impossible to imagine. “Come, there’s always room, pull up a chair, let me get you a plate.”

The family is very grateful for the loving care given by Rachel Bemiss, Karen Loeffler and especially by Stacy Bogausch who went many extra miles and spoiled her completely.

A memorial service will be held March 21, 2015, 1 p.m. at Our Christ Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 19 Park Row, Chatham, with Pastor Angela Nelson officiating.
